  1. I have seen 4 Rutger’s films in the above tables: Blade Runner, Nighthawks, Split Second and Batman Begins. When I started watching videos in the early 90s many of Rutger’s movies were going straight or very quickly to video [no DVD’s in the early days] and he was very popular with the home entertainment audiences. Indeed the entertainment press at that time nicknamed him King of the Videos.

I remember one rainy night in 1992, at the behest of my son then 16, unsuccessfully combing the video libraries for Split Second, a sci-fi thriller in 14 which Rutger hunts down a serial killer who is not human. I manged to catch the video for my son a few weeks later and watched it with him. I really can’t remember now what I thought of it all those years ago but it initially struck me today that if the critical reviews of it that I have since seen were any way accurate it seeed like something that even a keen sci-fi buff like Steve wouldn’t have got over-excited about. Here are a few sample reviews.

Lawrence Cohn of Variety wrote, “Split Second is an extremely stupid monster film, boasting enough violence and special effects to satisfy less-discriminating vid fans.” Chris Willman of the Los Angeles Times wrote, “It’s hard to think of a less satisfying creature feature in recent memory than the simply terrible Split Second.” Stephen Holden of The New York Times called it “fairly dull”. Doug Brod of Entertainment Weekly called it “utterly soulless and imitative”.

However because of those reviews I was pleasantly surprised that Bruce gives it a slightly better than good 62% review rating above. So maybe I did enjoy it at the time.

Rutger has left a reported net worth of $16 million and IMDB credits him with 14 acting awards and 5 noms. RIP Rutger – I shall always remember you for Blade Runner, Nighthawks and for a little know 1991 thriller called Past Midnight [not covered above so maybe one of Rutger’s straight to video efforts.]

    1. Hey Bob….thanks for stopping by and paying tribute to Rutger Hauer. It was so sad to read Steve’s comment about his passing. I am right there with you on watching his movies on VHS. Overall I have seen 20 of the movies listed (14 more have been added since your comment). I have not seen Split Second…but I was aware of the movie. Good memory of you and your son watching it.

As for Past Midnight….yep….it did not play in theaters here in Trump land…so I could not include it. Another one that fell into that category (goodness there were many) was Wedlocked or Deadlock….a sci-fi film that I enjoyed….though the special effects were terrible.

Good information on “The Dutch Paul Newman”….he will be missed. Rest in Peace Mr. Hauer.

  2. I liked him. I first noticed him in Nighthawks. Blade Runner is his most famous role but I liked him more in Flesh + Blood and Ladyhawke. Hobo with a Shotgun was entertaining. It is sadly not on your table. Nice tribute.

    1. Hey SteinHoF16. Nighthawks and Blade Runner are the movies that got me to know him. I also liked Flesh and Blood and Ladyhawke. I did not like Hobo With A Shotgun as much…..and it is now added to the table. The first 23 movies were the ones we had in our Hauer folder before yesterday….and DoC2 actually put this together (love summer vacation….we here at UMR are staffed more..lol). Last night I found another 14 movies for the page…including Hobo. Hobo and Flesh and Blood are two very gory movies. Thanks for sharing your memories of the late Mr. Hauer. RIP.

        1. Hey SteinHoF16…when he passed we were away…so we had to go with the movies that were already in the database….when we got home….I did some further research and added in movies like Hobo With A Shotgun. That is one dark gory movie…but Rutger is good in the movie. Good feedback.

  3. I have only seen one Rutger Hauer movie, but it is a big one: Blade Runner. It is a favourite movie of mine. Rest in Peace.

    1. Hey Flora…thanks for sharing your condolences. I agree 100%…..that one you have seen is indeed “a big one”. Good to see that is one of your favorites….as I am right there with you. Rest in Peace Mr. Hauer.

      1. I have also seen The Wilby Conspiracy once. I forgot about that one until it was added to the table.

        1. Hey Flora…..thanks for the adjusted Hauer tally count. Despite Michael Caine and Sidney Poitier bring in the Wilbur Conspiracy it is an ok movie at best.
