Drivel part of the page:  Over the last couple of weeks…we had been working on a Top 50 Stars 1950-2010 page. Sally Field was one of the actresses we picked for our list.  We had a UMR movie page on 20 of the 25 actresses….so now we are doing pages on the 5 missing actresses.  Earlier we did a Diane Keaton page….now we have a Sally Field page….which means Faye Dunaway, Julie Christie & Anne Bancroft will be coming in the future.

  1. Added Steve’s new Sally Field You Tube Video to the page…our thoughts on that video.

“Used to have such a crush on Sally Field. I have seen 29 of these movies…..the only missing movie was #12 The Way West. Though I admit.. I barely remember #13 Stay Hungry. Sad that her two Michael Caine movies are at the bottom (Beyond Poseidon Adventure) and near the bottom of the rankings. Though I actually like Surrender…Caine is pretty funny in that one. Seeing your video that let me connect the dots that she has co-starred with many of my favorite actors…Caine twice, Tom Hanks twice, James Caan, James Garner and Harrison Ford. I like Forrest Gump….it always surprises me that so many people do not like that blockbuster Oscar winning movie. Voted up and shared at UMR.”

    1. Hi Bruce, I’m amazed you’ve seen 29 of the 30 films on my video chart, you like Sally Field, you really really like her. 😉 My tally 11 and Flora 7.

It was basically a toss up between Lincon and Forrest Gump for the top spot, the scores were close. Maybe Gump hasn’t dated as well as other films of that period but it was hugely popular in the mid 90s.

There was also the backlash of Pulp Fiction losing to it at the Oscars. Young film fans prefer Tarantino’s 2nd movie, and still his best IMO. Thanks again for the comment, vote and share, much appreciated.

      1. Hey Steve…I had no idea that I had seen almost her entire career….overall I have seen 6 of these movies in theaters….and not once was it because Sally Field was in the movie. Both Caine movies were seen in theaters because my dad liked Caine…so he took me to Beyond the Poseidon Adventure….and I liked Caine when Surrender came out. I think Surrender is much better than the UMR ranking of 32nd…or second worst. I say Forrest Gump and Punchline because of Hanks. Mrs. Doubtfire because of Robin Williams. Hopper because of Burt Reynolds. I never saw Smokey in theaters…but I remember all the kids in school talking about that movie.

As for other movies….I tracked down Heroes because of Harrison Ford’s supporting role…..Kiss Me Goodbye….because I liked James Caan so much. Her stand alone career is not too impressive….but I did like My Name is Doris. Her next project is a mini-series on NetFlix….with Emma Stone and Jonah Hill…..I was not too impressed with the previews.

  2. Sally Field. Unlike Kay Francis I know her and her films. I’ve seen them all…

…no I’m kidding let me check the charts… 1, 2, 3… I’ve seen 11 of the 33 films listed here. One third. Two Oscars? That’s 2 more than Burt Reynolds managed. 🙂

Favorites include Smokey and the Bandit, Hooper and being a comic book movie junkie the two Spider-Man movies though I prefer Sam Raimi’s version. I also liked her in Places in the Heart.

I have them both on DVD but I’m not a big fan of either Mrs. Doubtfire or Forrest Gump.

Popular movies I’ve missed include – Norma Rae, Steel Magnolias and Absence of Malice.

How does Lincoln top Forrest Gump on the UMR chart? Gump won Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director and it grossed more than a billion dollars in adjusted currency. Lincoln shouldn’t even be in the top 5, nah nah nah I don’t care who directed it. [Bruce fumes]

She’s an old lady now but I fancied the hot pants out of Field when I was a teen. 🙂

    Voted Up!

    1. Hey Steve.
      1. Tally count….me 24….you 11….and Flora 8.
      2. Why Lincoln beat out Forrest Gump…..Sally Field got an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for her role in Lincoln…..she got nothing for her role in Forrest Gump..even with that massive edge…Lincoln barely beat out Forrest.
      3. Her stepdad was a famous stuntman….I imagine she had a great time making Hooper….with Brian Keith in the role as her stepdad. I loved that movie as a kid….pretty sure I saw it twice in theaters.
      4. Field is one of 1 actresses to have two Best Actress Oscars…..I find it amazing that she went from tv shows to Smokey movies to Oscar winner.
      5. Absence of Malice is pretty good….Newman is excellent of course…..has not aged very well…but still worth checking out.
      6. Glad to know I was not the only one fascinated by Sally Field as a teenager.
As always thanks for stopping by and commenting.

    2. Hey Steve…..I have Forrest Gump first and Lincoln second. Gump won the Best Picture Oscar…while Lincoln only got a nomination……but review % goes to Lincoln……and Field was nominated for Lincoln but not Gump……though if you think about all the supporting roles ever…Field’s momma has to be one of the most famous and mentioned….”Mamma says….”.

Absence of Malice is pretty good, but very dated. Norma Rae is good movie….with an exellent Field performance. Steel Magnolias was ok…..but far from my favorite. I really enjoyed Kiss Me Goodbye…Jeff Bridges has some nice moments in that one. I like you have never thought Mrs. Doubtfire was very funny….it always seemed to be a depressing movie. Love Hooper, The End and Murphy’s Romance.

Thanks as always for the feedback.

  3. I wonder when Sally was playing the flying nun in the 60s, did she ever imagine that she was going to be a double Oscar winner. She’s definitely had an incredible career. It’s years since I seen Norma Rae and Places in the Heart.
I think her big emotional speech for her second Oscar was probably just nerves and shock that she’d won twice. One of my favourite movies is Punchline, co-starring Tom Hanks, about stand up comedians. She’s really good in it. I know Forest Gump is very polarising but I really liked her in it.
And of course, Mrs. Doubtfire and Steel Magnolias. She really has an incredible body of work, add to that her T.V series, Brothers and Sisters. It became essential viewing in our home.
And I forgot about Mrs. Lincoln, fantastic in it.

    1. Hey Chris….probably in her wildest dreams did she think she would be in the select company of two time Best Actress Oscar winner….especially when she was doing the “now” horrible special effects scenes of flying. When I was growing up The Flying Nun was shown in re-runs pretty regularly….I imagine many younger people have no idea about that tv show.

I saw Punchline in theaters….at the time I did not like it very much….I found Hanks’ character way too depressing….but over the years….I have rewatched a few times…and I enjoy more now…then again…I am older and wiser…lol. One of her movies I like…but is way down the list is Surrender….I saw that in theaters too….and I found it to be a nice little comedy….Michael Caine is very good in that one too. Granted….the Surrender fan club is pretty small….lol.

When we did our new screen legends list….we had 5 actresses without UMR pages….well now that number is down to 3…..thanks for sharing your Field thoughts.

  4. Love Sally Field. I used to have a serious crush on her when she was the Bandit’s girl. I did not realize that those Reynolds movies were her first movies. She is still growing strong forty years later. Great page.

    1. Hey Stein….you were not alone with your crush on Sally Field during her Bandit years. Yep…she had a supporting part in The Way West…..then it was tv work……and then straight to blockbuster movies. I agree 40 years later and she is still going strong….thanks for the compliment.

  5. Hi, Bruce.

That’s great that you will be doing pages on the other missing actresses from the legends page you did recently.

    Well, about Sally Field.
Some movies I love, others I hate (Forrest Gump), and others exist .

I really hate the line about chocolate boxes because most chocolate boxes I have seen have an index with pictures of the chocolates and what is in them.

I used to watch Murphy’s Romance at least once a year until Corey Haim died. I have still not seen it since he died.

She made her debut in The Way West opposite one of my favourite actors of all time – Richard Widmark. Robert Mitchum and Kirk Douglas are also favourites of mine.

Therefore, The Way West is my favourite of her films.

Others that are (or have been re- Haim):
    Murphey’s Romance
    Mrs. Doubtfire
    Absence of Malice

I have not seen Norma Rae. That acceptance speech has kept me from seeing it.

    I have seen 8 movies.

    1. Hey Flora.
      1. I was working on Kay Francis and Sally Field at the same time….I was going to publish both at the same time….but I got tired….so Sally came about 10 hours later.
      2. Debbie said I needed to knock those 5 actresses out…..so that is what I am doing.
      3. Poor Forrest Gump…..it seems to have many many people that do not like the movie…..I still enjoy watching it….but I think it is not going to be considered a classic great movie in another 30 years.
      4. She got her movie career started off with a very strong cast…..I hope you noticed I included your boy Richard Widmark as the second star….at first it was going to be Mitchum….but I changed my mind when I saw Widmark was in the movie.
      5. Tally count….I have seen 24….you are at 8.
      6. I have not seen The Way West….but it sounds interesting.
      7. Norma Rae is pretty good….she is pretty amazing in the movie….especially when you realized she left the world of Smokey and The Bandit….to Oscar glory…that is a pretty good jump.
Your visit and comment are ….of course….greatly appreciated.

        1. Glad you saw Mr. Widmark….in the co-star list…..now if I can only remember that Martin Sheen was in Apocalypse Now…..lol.
