Scarlett Johansson Movies

Rough Night has been added to the rankings.

She has starred in many Marvel Studio box office blockbusters. She was Woody Allen’s muse in three movies. She starred in the highly acclaimed Oscar® winning movie Lost in Translation. She starred in Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige.  As a child actress she appeared in movies that starred Bruce Willis, Sean Connery, and Robert Redford.  She has received four Golden Globe® nominations for her acting and she is one of the busiest people working in Hollywood today.  She has appeared in almost 40 movies since her film debut in 1994’s North.  She has two movies for 2013 (Don Jon and Under the Skin) and 5 more movies in different stages of pre-production that includes the new Captain America and Avengers movies.  The she…. is of course… Scarlett Johansson, and after many requests she is the subject of my latest movie page.

Since 1994, Scarlett Johansson (1984-) has over 65 acting credits listed on her IMDb page.  This page will be ranking  Scarlett Johansson Movies from Best to Worst.  They are ranked by looking at the movie’s box results, the movie’s reviews by both critics and audiences and by how much award recognition the movie earned.  Television roles were not included in the page.

Quick Thoughts on all the Scarlett Johansson Movies

An American Rhapsody (2006) – Not only have I not seen the movie, I had never even heard of it before doing this research.  Nastassja Kinski also stars in the movie.

The Avengers (2012) – How can this no be her best movie?  Not only is The Avengers her highest grossing movie it is one the highest grossing movies of all time.  The 88.7% rating from critics and audiences beats many of the Best Oscar® winning pictures of the past. The only area The Avengers is lacking in is award glory….as it only received one Oscar® nomination.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) – a good but not great sequel

The Black Dahlia (2006) – Based on one of the greatest murder mysteries in Hollywood history.  The movie is not as good as it could have been….but she plays her part the sexy vixen girlfriend very well….directed by Brian De Palma.

Captain America: Civil War (2016) – Takes a little while to get started but the airport fight scene is awesome.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) – A very entertaining movie….but probably the 5th best Captain America movie.

Chef (2014) – A highly enjoyable comedy drama.

Don Jon (2013) – Don Jon is written and directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt….movie is pretty good but not as good as I was hoping for.

Eight Legged Freaks (2006) – A very very silly movie but it has a decent moments, just do not look for Oscar® worthy performances in this movie.

Fall (1997)One of her first movies and her part is pretty small.

Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003) – Yet another period piece, but this one has one of her better performances…she actually got a Golden Globe® nomination for her role in this movie.  Colin Firth is outstanding as well.

Ghost in the Shell (2017) – not as bad as I thought it was going to be…it has some nice moments

Ghost World (2001) – I remember when this movie came out and it was getting lots of buzz around it….when I finally saw it I was not that impressed….and I am a huge Steve Buscemi fan and I really wanted to like it.

A Good Woman (2004) An interesting, though slow moving period piece.  Tom Wilkinson is the best part of the movie.

Hail Caesar! (2016) Strongly strongly disliked this movie….a huge disappointment.

Her (2013) This is an excellent film.  She only provides the voice….but her presence is amazing in this movie….one of the best movies I have saw in 2013.

He’s Just Not That Into You (2009) – A pretty big box office hit but not exactly a great movie.  The ensemble cast needs more to do.

HitchcockI really enjoyed watching this movie….Anthony Hopkins is excellent as Hitch and Helen Mirren picked up a Golden Globe® for her performance.  Johansson gets the Janet Leigh part.

Home Alone 3 (1997) –  Not sure many people even realize there was a third Home Alone movie.  Her fourth lowest rated movie according to critics and audiences.  She has a small part as one of the sisters of the latest kid to be Home Alone.

The Horse Whisperer I recently watched this one.  Probably the last great role for Robert Redford. Johansson was only 14 when the movie came out and she shows some serious acting skills at a very young age.

If Lucy Fell (1996) – I saw this movie many moons ago and I do not remember her part at all.

In Good Company – One of my favorite Johansson movies.  She plays Dennis Quaid’s daughter who gets involved with Quaid’s younger boss, Topher Grace.

Iron Man 2 – Her first box office blockbuster and the first time she got to play Natalia Romanova..better known as the Black Widow.  My least favorite of the four Iron Man movies but still an entertaining movie.

The Island (2005)Director Michael Bay’s lowest performing movie at the box office.  I liked this science fiction movie, but not enough to ever watch it for the second time.

The Jungle Book (2016) – Loved this movie.  Great graphics, great story and great voice performances.  Too bad her Kaa does not have a bigger part.

Just Cause (1995) – This was the second movie of her career and a very small role as well.  Sean Connery has the main role, which is not one of his better roles

Lost in Translation –  A very well done adult drama with an Oscar® nominated performance from Bill Murray and a Golden Globe® performance by Johansson.

A Love Song For Bobby Long (2004) – Have not seen this movie but she did get a Golden Globe® nomination for her role in the movie.

Lucy (2014) – Sadly this was not as good as I thought it would be…starts off strong but fades as the movie progresses.

Manny & LoThis is a movie that is worth trying to find and watch.  Johansson is excellent in the movie and even more impressive when you realize it was only her third movie of her career.

The Man Who Wasn’t There (2001) Box Office: – I am one of the few people to see this movie at the theater, probably the first time I took notice of Scarlett Johansson.  This movie seems to be the forgotten movie of directors Joel and Ethan Coen’s career.  Billy Bob Thornton is outstanding in a very low key performance.

Match Point (2005)The first of three Woody Allen movies that she appeared in.  She received a Golden Globe® nomination for this role.  The only Woody Allen thriller to date and one to watch.

The Nanny Diaries (2007) – I actually liked this movie. It has some pretty strong support from Laura Linney and Paul Giamatti as Mr. and Mrs. X.

North (1996) – Hard to blame the ten year old girl making her film debut for this mess of a movie.  Director Rob Reiner and Bruce Willis do not have the same excuse.

The Other Boleyn Girl (2008) – Johansson and Natalie Portman play sisters who fall under the spell of Eric Bana who plays Henry VIII.  This period piece is pretty interesting….but Portman has the better part.

Perfect Score (2004) – A pretty typical high school comedy…but it is pretty cool to see the future Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow acting together before becoming superheroes.

The Prestige (2006) My favorite Johansson movie. Directed by Christopher Nolan, this movie is one that needs to be watched more than one time.

Rough Night (2017) –  Have not seen this one yet….but I was not impressed with the trailers.

Scoop (2006) – Not one of director Woody Allen’s better movies.  It was her 2nd of three Woody Allen she starred in, but easily the worst of the three movies.

Sing (2016) – Huge hit…but it did not keep me or my kids very entertained.

The Spirit (2008) – I had high expectations for this movie but I was let down.  Compared to Sin City this blue screen movie does not measure up.

SpongeBob Square Pants Movie (2004) SpongeBob is King! ..though it might take some effort to hear her role.

Under the Skin   Mmmm….not sure about this one….I was disappointed in this one….but Scarlett is pretty good in the movie…and you have to give her kudos for taking the role.

Vicky Cristina – Her third and (so far) final Woody Allen movie.  Lots of great roles in this movie…including an Oscar® winning performance by Penelope Cruz.

We Bought A Zoo (2011) Matt Damon is the star and Johansson plays the love interest.  Based on a true story and a movie the whole family can watch.

  1. i saw 26 , including 16 of top 18. i missed sponge bob and sing (but i don’t really miss anime) Scarlett is the most accomplished/popular actress of current under 40 years old actresses. she is in top 100 ticket sellers of all time #91 UMR with gwyneth paltrow #98 (and 48 years old). i love her acting. for me, her sex appeal is approaching Marilyn Monroe status and her acting is far superior.

10 and favorite Her. 9 and favorite the jungle book. 9s not favorites: avengers, captain america winter soldier, captain marvel, avengers endgame, thor ragnorok,(do these make me a comic book movie fan, yes , i confess i recently rewatched them all to fight the covid blues.) a love song for bobby long, lucy.
hidden gems:her 10, love song for bobby long 9, the man who wasn’t there 7, just cause 8, we bought a zoo 8. i did not greatly appreciate lost in translation 4 nor marriage story 5 (too depressing with great acting)

  2. Hi Bob, thanks for the review, generous rating (ooh), info and trivia, always appreciated.

Happy you liked the posters and stills.

A bigger than usual video this time, crammed with images. I just wish I could add any music score I wanted to but for copyright reasons I have to stick with youtubes audio library.

Bruce and I have a similar top 10 but in a different order. Different sources, different results. Naturally I feel my scores are fairer. [Bruce snarls] 😉

Scarlett waited and waited for an Oscar nomination, watching her actor friends pick up nominations along the way. And finally this year Scarlett gets not one but two Oscar nominations – Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit.

Her only big win so far I think was Best Actress from BAFTA for Lost in Translation.

Two of Scarlett’s films scored 10 out of 10 – Lost in Translation and The Avengers. There are several scoring 9 including – Avengers Endgame & Infinity War, Her and Ghost World.

Avengers Infinity War is no.1 at IMDB and Lost in Translation tops RT.

“One of the most exciting thing about The Avengers (2012), is that in my opening scene the first thing you see is my character getting punched in the face. Everybody is like “Damn, it’s nice to see a girl get the sh*t kicked out of her.”.

“I love Marilyn (Monroe). I think she was incredibly beautiful and a very underrated actress. I am a curvy woman who is blonde, and perhaps we are both comfortable in our femininity, but I think that is as far as the comparison goes.”

“I wanted to be Frank Sinatra and sing like him. He’s got a voice like gold bullion. His voice is like velvet cake.I loved musical theater, so from a young age, I admired how show-stopping Sinatra was.”

“I just adore Woody. We have a lot in common. We’re New Yorkers, Jewish. We have a very easygoing relationship.”

    1. HI STEVE: Thanks for the feedback and very interesting quotes.

I like Sinatra as an actor but never warmed to his voice; and his music I find too “slangy”. Among American singers my preference would be for Eddie Fisher who I thought had a more pleasant voice than Frankie’s. I also thought Elvis had one of the most impressive voices among popular singers and love many of his recordings. I begin to think The Beatles though may have dated badly.

You say: “Bruce and I have a similar top 10 but in a different order. Different sources, different results. Naturally I feel my scores are fairer. [Bruce snarls]”. Strange that because my perception has always been W o C worships the ground he walks on; you agree with his every word; and I’m the only one who tries to get him to defend some of his stances about things such as The Thin Woman’s status and some of the crazy people he puts in his co-star links column.

By the way he has been bombarding us with new pages lately which I welcome; but do yo think he’s planning to leave the country?

      1. Bob, I like Frankie but as you know I’m a big Elvis fan, the king was probably my first idol and I’m not an idol worshipper!

Bruce and I don’t always agree and we don’t necessarily like the same films, he’s not a sci-fi or horror film fan for a start. But I’m on his side regarding Myrna Loy, she was just as much a film star as all the other young actresses of that period. Okay she wasn’t a dramatic actress like Joan, Kate or Bette but it’s unfair to say people were ignoring her name on movie posters and that she didn’t contribute much to the Powell-Loy team ups.

        I’m more than 20 new pages behind, it’s ridiculous. I can’t keep up! 🙂

        1. Steve is so smart…..”But I’m on his side regarding Myrna Loy, she was just as much a film star as all the other young actresses of that period.” The thing I find so funny about this Loy argument…is I am not a huge Loy fan. Heck I barely knew anything about her when I wrote the page at the request of RobWrite (now there is a name from the past….he is now writing for a television show). It was her stats and some of her stances against Hitler that impressed me so much.

Good stuff from both Steve and Bob.

          1. 1/“Steve is so smart…..”But I’m on his side regarding Myrna Loy, she was just as much a film star as all the other young actresses of that period.” – Cogerson.

REPLY: Hey! Lensman’s the guy who thinks Jason Statham is the new Olivier and that the slasher fellah in Black Christmas is Santa Claus.

2/“It was her stats and her stances against Hitler that impressed me so much.” – Cogerson

REPLY: Talking of the Fuhrer Joseph Goebbels Hitler’s propagandist maintained “Repeat the same lie often enough and people will believe it is true.” He should have added that you can come to believe it yourself.

3/“The thing I find so funny about this Loy argument…is I am not a huge Loy fan”. – Cogerson.

REPLY It seems we did after all dodge the bullet: think what we’d have had to stick if you’d actually been a great fan of hers. Those of us who have been round the site long enough have already experienced the Joel/Bruce love-in.

            Anyway keep safe.

  3. A superb Scarlett video in terms of both quantity and quality – the best for some time in my view and well worth 99% rating. BEST STILLS
