Sir Thomas Sean Connery first appearance in movies was in the 1954 film Lilacs in the Spring. Since that film, he has appeared in nearly 70 movies in his career. Some of his early breaks in the movie business were 1958’s Another Time, Another Place opposite Lana Turner and the Walt Disney’s 1959 film Darby O’ Gill and the Little People. His biggest break was when he was cast as James Bond in Dr. No. Appearing as Bond in seven films, he became an international star. His non Bond movies did not fare as well, as he struggled to get out of the huge James Bond shadow. During this time frame he did appear in some outstanding movies like The Hill and The Man Who Would Be King.

In 1983 he appeared as James Bond for the last time in Never Say Never Again. It was looking like his career was just about over, when in 1987, he made The Untouchables. He won an Oscar® as Best Supporting Actor for the movie. His career took off again and he made some of his greatest films. Movies like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Hunt for Red October and The Rock. His last movie appearance was The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in 2003.

His IMDb page shows 92 acting credits from 1954-2012. This page will rank Sean Connery movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, shorts, cameos and movies that were not released in theaters were not included in the rankings.

1 I eagerly awaited this update and it got by me until you mentioned it in I think a response to one of my other posts.

2 As you say it was has been suggested that Patrick McGoohan was one of those who was offered Bond. However in an interview one of the films producers claimed that it was McGoohan who started that rumour and it was untrue.

3 Ironically some ‘first refusal’ suggestions even if true don’t actually ring true. For example that Bing Crosby was the first actor to be offered the part of Lt Columbo in the Peter Falk hit TV series. Patrick McGoohan appeared in and directed several Columbo episodes

4 Anyway I like McGoohan but most cinema-goers seem to feel that Sean was and is the definitive Bond. I haven’t yet had a chance to digest your updated Connery figures but certainly when I last did a count Sean was the HIGHEST GROSSING Bond by whatever method of inflation calculation is used.

5 Apparently the young Sean was also Bond-like off screen as well! When he made Another Time Another Place with Lana Turner Johnny Stompanato barged onto the set, brandished a gun at Sean and threatened him. He had concluded Sean and Lana were having an affair. Sean allegedly decked him and chased him off the set. That was of course 4 or 5 years before Bond.

6 There have been conspiracy theories about the Stampanato killing. In the Belfast Shipyard most thought Cheryl did do it and the division of opinion was about the reason. Many concluded that Johnny had been dating both Lana and Cheryl and the stabbing had been the consequence of jealousy within a love triangle.

    Best wishes BOB

    1. Hey Bob.
      1. Glad you found my Connery outdate….the big winners for his movies were the early Bond movies….my older numbers had Skyfall close to those numbers….but now Skyfall is still among the Best Bond movies but not close to Thunderball or Goldfinger anymore.
      2. I think people considered to play Bond has now passed the amount of people considered to play Scarlett O’Hara.
      3. Sounds like good publicity for P. McGoohan.
      4. I read that the reason Connery agreed to do his “Tarzan” movie was to get away from Johnny S….seems like hiding in a faraway location is good way to stay out of trouble.
      5. The Stampanato killing is now part of Hollywood legend now….as time has passed it just seems like a movie….of wait a minute Turner did make a movie that took advantage of that situation…..sadly the real truth will never be known.
      6. Bogart page is almost updated….and it will include 8 new movies that were not previously on the other page. Probably by tomorrow morning it will be finished.

Thanks forextra info about Sean and Johnny S.

Regarding Sean’s drinking reputation I recall that when he finished making Shalako with Bardot and Stephen Boyd he was invited onto a TV chat show in London and he was accompanied by a gatecrashing Boyd. Both were high as kites and obviously had gotten on well together during the filming.

        TODAY’S PIECE OF USELESS INFORMATION
Boyd came from a small town about 20 minutes drive from me

        1. Hey Bob.
          1. No problem…glad to share my limited knowledge (compared to yours) about things during that time frame.
          2. I have read and heard a few Michael Caine stories about Connery….so I find your story about him and Boyd very easy to believe.
          3. Very cool. Let’s see….Mark Ruffalo went to high school near me….and back in the day Margaret Sullavan was the queen of my hometown as she was born right down the street from my house.

          1. You weren’t the man who danced with the girl who danced with the Prince of Wales were you !!?

  2. Just read that you updated this page on Connery and had to comment on it.

Did I tell you that I am a member of his closed Facebook fan Club?

It’s great. Everything must be related in some way to Connery. No off topic allowed.

Unfortunately, I was surprised by pictures from Dr. No with the tarantula all over him, although I should have expected that as photos from all Bond films were being shared. But that is why I have not seen this film. It is the only Bond with Connery I am missing. I tried to watch it once, and I figured that if a shirtless Connery could not distract me from the spider, I’d skip it.

By the way – there is NO way I’m mentioning Rudyard Kipling being my ancestor on that site even when talking about the Man Who Would Be King. I might get kicked out for off topic talk.

    I love Sir Sean Connery.

Here are the films I’ve seen updated: 24 of his films.

The highest rated film I have seen is 2. The lowest is 42.

Wonder if my mention of Murder on the Orient Express and Richard Widmark influenced you to choose Sir Sean Connery to update next.

    Favourites include: no order

    Murder on the Orient Express
All Bond movies for which I do have an order but won’t mention here as separate – except Dr. No I havn’t seen
    Marnie
    The Hill
    The Russia House
The man Who Would BE King
    The Hunt for Red October
    The Great Train Robbery

    Etc. Etc. etc.

    1. Hey Flora.
      1. Very cool about joining his private Facebook Page…this updated page would be a good page to link to that page. Not sure I belong to that page…yet….lol.
      2. Not sure I was aware that you were related to Kipling…..very interesting,
      3. The spider in Dr. No…is only around for a couple of minutes….just use the fast forward button….lol.
      4. Actually I re-watched You Only Live Once and Goldfinger recently…..and I like adding the links to the Letterboxd.com review…so I wanted to update the page…then do the review.
      5. So your tally count is 24…mine is 43….seems Steve’s comment only complained about The Man Who Would Be King was ranked so low and did not give a tally count….he should be happy with the new rankings…that movie is now in the Top 10.
I would say my Top 5 would be (in no order) Goldfinger, Indy Jones 4, Man Who Would Be King, A Bridge Too Far & The Great Train Robbery.

      1. Haven’t I mentioned I am a Kipling? I have an entire thread in TCM forums devoted to it in the favourites section. Again, my TCM forum name I ColumboFan.

I am pretty sure I mentioned this to you before. My great aunt did an ancestry search on my mother’s side – and Rudyard Kipling’s brother is my direct ancestor.

That is why I try to see every film based upon Kipling and why I have requested a Rudyard Kipling page.

  3. A friend sent me this link after I gave him my top 5 favorite Connery roles….
    5.Captain Marco Ramius
    4.James Bond
    3.Daniel Dravitt
    2.Jimmy Malone
    1.Jesse McMullen
    Cheers.

    1. Thanks for the list. I had to look up the Jesse role…I assume it is from Family Business? The rest I am very familiar with. Glad to see The Man Who Would Be King on your list.

  4. Hi Cogerson

The last movie I saw Sean Connery in was the Rock. For me, he will always be the best James Bond there ever was.

    Voted up and awesome.

    1. Hey Sueswan….thanks for checking out my Sean Connery hub…..the Rock was good ….but Connery’s Bond movies are the best of the Bond movies and the best of the Connery movies….thanks for the votes up and the nice compliment.

  5. Hey Flora…Kelly is the bomb…as she likes to say…she continued to check out the hubs after I stopped the e-mail I used to send out to my friends and family whenever I published a new hub. Hey Flora I am actually 10 for 10 on box office hits….9 for 10 on critic hits…only missing #1 The Hill….and I have seen the first 19 Movie Score movies…then my totals fall off the board….so it looks like Steve will win this round…42 to 29 to 16. I still think for a pretty current actor 16 is a pretty good number for you….Looking at your previous comments many months ago…I am trying to get my wife to watch one your favorite movies tonight when the little ones go to sleep…The Great Train Robbery…which move me into the 30s. Thanks for the revisit.
