Sir Thomas Sean Connery first appearance in movies was in the 1954 film Lilacs in the Spring. Since that film, he has appeared in nearly 70 movies in his career. Some of his early breaks in the movie business were 1958’s Another Time, Another Place opposite Lana Turner and the Walt Disney’s 1959 film Darby O’ Gill and the Little People. His biggest break was when he was cast as James Bond in Dr. No. Appearing as Bond in seven films, he became an international star. His non Bond movies did not fare as well, as he struggled to get out of the huge James Bond shadow. During this time frame he did appear in some outstanding movies like The Hill and The Man Who Would Be King.

In 1983 he appeared as James Bond for the last time in Never Say Never Again. It was looking like his career was just about over, when in 1987, he made The Untouchables. He won an Oscar® as Best Supporting Actor for the movie. His career took off again and he made some of his greatest films. Movies like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Hunt for Red October and The Rock. His last movie appearance was The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in 2003.

    1. Hey Flora….it has been a bad last couple of weeks for the Goldfinger actresses. RIP Nadja Regin. Gotta admit….with Sir Sean being 88….everytime I see a comment on his page…my first reaction is….”Oh no….he passed away.”. Glad that was not the case. Thanks for the headsup.

      1. Hey Flora….just fixed the “edit” the comment button…moved the time to 6 minutes versus 5 minutes….sorry we lost that widget during our website meltdown. Thank goodness March is now over….a truly brutal month for this website with all the issues we had……views were down 30% compared to March 2018….and last year was not a bed of roses on this website last March. Good stuff.

    1. Hey Flora….when I first saw you comment pop up….I thought…”oh no….Sean has passed away”….thankfully it is only to celebrate his 88th birthday. 88 years old….wow…..that is up there….lol.

      1. Sorry to scare you. I know how you feel about actors and actresses who are old getting attention. I do check IMDb daily for birthdays and deaths.

        1. Glad you shared his birthday…just got through giving his page a minor update….we have three Sean pages now….one that ranks his movies by UMR score….one that ranks his movies by box office and one that ranks them by movie review approval %……so thanks for the headsup on Sir Sean’s birthday. Let’s hope he reaches the century mark like Luise Rainer, Kirk Douglas and Olivia de Havilland did.

    2. HI FLORA

As you often do you bring back nostalgic memories to me with your birthday tribute to Sir Sean.

Back in 1963 I went with my first girlfriend to see From Russia with Love and he was I suppose about 33 then.

Anyhow when he first appeared on the screen in that movie as we watched it she couldn’t help exclaiming “Oh he’s gorgeous!” I just sat there and cringed!

Actually he surprised me ultimately because I initially assumed that like some who came after him his stardom would disappear once he ceased being Bond but of course he has become one of the all-time Greats in not just the United Kingdom but the States, Canada and in fact the world. Probably one of the very first superstars to be promoted out of the British cinema.

His range as an actor also surprised me.

      1. Thanks for sharing memories about your date with your first girlfriend to see Connery in From Russia With Love and you cringing. He does indeed have a broad range of roles that go beyond James Bond. I’ve been a fan of his for a long time.

        1. My dad’s favorite Bond movie…From Russia With Love…..my dad had to worry about William Shatner…not thinking my mom was to impressed with Connery. Good stuff.

  1. You really should read my previous post and fix the worldwide gross for highlander correctly because you made a mistake concerning international and worldwide gross ; i explain you all in my previous post …
Highlander made at least 52 518 784 international and 14 300 000 domestic for a total worldwide adjusted of
66 818 784 (in 2017 $) I also give you an explanation about my russian box office figures on your 1970 yearly review but you doesn’t seem interested by that…. I made a lot of researches regarding missing international box office gross for movies (and i already have found a lot of things… I’ve recently find a 10 million admission figure in Europe for Vera Cruz (1954) among others but if you doesn’t take it in account or doesn’t believe my sources ; i’ll stop it because it’s useless … Have a nice day, thanks

  2. Hello Bruce, i looked at your worldwide figures for “HIghlander” at the bottom of your page and there’s just a problem ; i think that you use the foreign gross given by “The Numbers” to make your grand total but this foreign number of 7 millions $ for 1986 is wrong ; according to “Box Office Story” who give the admissions available in european countries ; Highlander made :

    4 141 203 admissions in France
    682 255 admissions in Spain
    1 031 479 admissions in Germany

The total admissions available in Europe is : 5 854 937
    If if multiply by the average ticket price at the time (3.71 $) : 5 854 937 x 3.71 = 21 721 816 $ overseas in 1986 or 52 518 784 overseas in 2017 $ … So you should fix it 😉

    Hope it helps ! Thanks

    1. Hey Max…..ah the joys of different sources reporting different box office grosses. In this case, Box Office Mojo did not report a number, The Numbers and WorldwideBoxOffice.com reported 7 million in international gross. Wikipedia reported 12.9 million in international gross. Previously I used the 7 million number….but after seeing your ticket sales…..I moved the gross to 12.9 million…..which moves the worldwide gross to 42 million or about 55% more. Thanks for the information….it is greatly appreciated.

      1. Hello Bruce, you really should fix it with the foreign gross i give you because when you said in your previous post that Wikipedia reported 12.9 million in international gross, it’s in fact the worldwide gross from The Numbers because 5 900 000 domestic + 7 000 000 international = 12 900 000 worldwide… Check the wiki page from HIghlander ; you’ll see that they use The Numbers as a reference but the guy who wrote the article apparently mixed up the term international and
        worldwide… So, HIghlander made at least 52 518 784 overseas in 2017 $

Concerning “Worldwideboxoffice” ( i’ve in the past discussed with Chuck Kahn, the owner of the website) they use as a main source IMDB and, like Wikipedia IMDB is a website open for everyone ; so it’s just people like you and me who are providing the figures…
IMDB, Wikipedia, and Wordwideboxoffice have in 80% of the cases the same sources : BOM and The Numbers…

In the case of Highlander, it’s in fact the same source spread in every website : 5 900 000 domestic and 7 000 000 overseas and those figures came from The Numbers ; in other words in this case, IMDB, Wiki and Worldwideboxoffice only use the figures from The Numbers ; it’s not different websites with differents sources who have the same gross ; it’s in fact just the same gross figure republished by different websites …. Am i clear lol ?

There’s only one international figure available for Highlander : 7 million according to the Numbers but it is not accurate because for old movies, BOM and The Numbers gives sometimes only a glimpse of the foreign gross ; they give a figure they have found for 1 or 2 countries only or an old figure published when the movie was still running in theather … So it’s not always accurate …
        Here are other exemples :

-The Longest Day : 11 000 000 $ overseas gross according to The Numbers but according to the official admissions figures availables in Europe the movie made 11 933 629 admissions in France and 11 263 736 admissions in Italy … (I’ve got all my sources and those figures are official ; i can give it to you by mail ) So if we convert those admissions into gross, it’s higher than the figure provided by the Numbers ….
-Doctor Zhivago : 138 493 $ in foreign gross only !!!! according to The Numbers ; in Europe the movie made respectively in France ; Spain ; Germany ; Uk and Italy according to “Box Office Story” (In admissions)
        9,816,054
        7,257,513
        12,750,000
        11,200,000
        22,900,000
        …..
I hope in those cases you believe more the admissions figures than the foreign gross of The Numbers because you can be 100 % sure that those admissions are more reliable than the foreign gross reported…
And for Towering Inferno ; admissions in Europe are also far higher than the foreign gross provided by The Numbers … It’s in most of the cases a very reliable website but for some old movies it’s not always perfect and i try to check everything and compare to be accurate as possible….

As i said to you, i’m checking manually with pen and paper all the admissions figures available superior to 1m in Europe for every movie released with some success in the US ; i can give you (i already have in the past) the websites i use ; they collect and published official data from theathers companies all over Europe ; it is in fact very accurate and official figures … Not exhaustive but accurate…

My position regarding which figures we must use in really simple : if the admissions converted into gross are superior to a figure published by BOM or The Numbers , we should fix it and stick to the highest gross figure ! As you said it is sometimes very difficult to find box office gross for old movies ; and some gross figures will never be 100 % complete and accurate because a lot of infos are missing so it’s seems logical to me to use the highest reliable figures we have to get closer to the reality….

I’m just trying to help you making your figures the more accurate possible because it’s my passion too dear Bruce 🙂
I hope that my explanations have convinced you, from time to time, if I see an international figure which seems to me to be too low compared to the official european figures which I have, I hope that you will take my remark into consideration.

Hope it helps !! Thanks a lot

    2. Hey Max……we have seen your comments……doing some additional research on that website….plus WoC would need to add in some more code….to get that information out there. I am having a hard time digesting that Russia was such a “box office player” for American movies. The admissions for the rest Europe look good. I am efforting a road trip to a library that has some good information/books on Russian theaters. Your research is fascinating…and I am enjoying checking it out….but would like to do this further research before putting it on the website as “gospel”.

      1. Hello Bruce , thank you for your response, i appreciate it…But don’t forget to fix the worldwide gross for Highlander, as i said in the previous post, it made , (according to “box office story” and “jp’s box office” which are websites that tracks european admissions) :
        -4 141 203 admissions in France
        -682 255 admissions in Spain
        -1 031 479 admissions in Germany
        Converted in 2017 $ it made at least 52 518 784 overseas !

When you said in your previous post that Wikipedia reported 12.9 million in international gross, it’s in fact the worldwide gross from The Numbers because 5 900 000 domestic + 7 000 000 international = 12 900 000 worldwide… Check the wiki page from HIghlander ; you’ll see that they use The Numbers as a reference but the guy who wrote the article apparently mixed up the term international and
worldwide… So there’s a mistake because BOM and The Numbers gives sometimes only a glimpse of the foreign gross ; they give a figure they have found for 1 or 2 countries only or an incomplete figure published when the movie was still running in theather … So it’s not always accurate …
You can be 100% sure and certain of those admissions figures and as i said to you i’m not gonna make those research for nothing or invent some admissions figures… Just try to make things more accurate and complete…
So, you move the worldwide gross to 45 m$ but you should move it to 66 818 784 (in 2017 $) it will be more accurate, be sure….
Hope it helps , thanks a lot
