Shirley Booth (1898-1992) was an Oscar® winning American actress. Booth is probably best remembered today for her television series Hazel. Many are surprised to learn that she was a seasoned theatrical veteran, having appeared on Broadway from 1925-70. She was highly regarded as a stage actress and ranks as one of the premier talents of the 20th-century theatre. Her IMDb page shows 15 acting credits from 1949 to 1974. This page will rank Shirley Booth movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. To do well in our overall rankings a movie has to do well at the box office, get good reviews by critics, be liked by audiences and get some award recognition. This is one of the smallest amount of movies that we ranked on one page, only our James Dean page has less movies. This comes from a request by UMR Hall of Famer bob cox.

I have seen three Shirley Booth movies. Those three movies are COME BACK LITTLE SHEBA, THE MATCHMAKER, and HOT SPELL. She was good in COME BACK LITTLE SHEBA but I liked her best in HOT SPELL which, if memory serves me, was directed by George Cukor.
Hey Greg….not many people check out our Shirley Booth page. Good breakdown! FYI- This is one of the smallest pages on UMR…with only 5 movies.
This must be the shortest UMR page next to James Dean 🙂 I only saw Shirley Booth in Come Back Little Sheba, where she gave one of the best performances I have ever seen. Co-star, i Burt Lancaster, made to look older for the role, also scored a strong performance, as the repressed alcoholic who explodes and lashes out at poor Shirley with a kitchen knife. At the time, Lancaster was trying to establish himself as a serious dramatic actor and he did earn recognition for his work, though ultimately it was Booth who got the most attention.
Hey PhilHoF17….you are 100% correct….this is the shortest actress page we have and the second shortest thespian page we have….with James Dean and his 3 movies be the smallest. I think many people have only seen one Shirley Booth movie….and that one movie is normally Come Back, Little Sheba. I think Lancaster got lots of acting kudos by helping Booth win her Oscar, Magnini (spelling), Reed, Sinatra, Niven in the 1950s. Those kudos helped get Lancaster his Oscar in 1960. Good stuff as always.
*I am tying to interview for our “Getting To Know” series…if you read this…can you send your e-mail to CogersonMovieScore@gmail.com? I have ten questions I am hoping you will answer.
I saw 1 , a 10 and favorite: come back, little sheba. I thought burt and Shirley were incredible in this wonderful portrayal of alcoholism and recovery. very dark but perfectly written. I am a recovering alcoholic with 31 years clean and sober. if anyone can’t quit drinking and drugging and wants to quit, I found a wonderful way of living that helps me. it helps me to share about my illness and recovery, My email is rwcoxmd@yahoo.com. I love movies on alcoholism and addiction: days of wine and roses, the lost weekend, a tree grows in Brooklyn, 28 days, die hard 3 (LOL), trainspotting, street car named desire.
thanks for the shout out on the request, I knew it would be brief. great list of triple crown winners and first movie Oscar winners, elite company for Shirley/hazel. great progress on best actor and best actress Oscar winners. congratulations.

Hey bob cox. Glad you found and commented on your requested Shirley Booth page. Thanks for sharing some of your personal demons of your past. I think we all have things like that in our lives. Congrats on 31 years of clean and sober…..an impressive total. I think a page on addiction would be interesting….certainly not a fun light page….but the history of movies is filled with just such stories. Thanks for sharing your e-mail….maybe it will help others who are going what you went through 31 years ago. Great comment!
