Happy 85th birthday to Shirley MacLaine!
Hey Flora….good birthday shout out to Shirley MacLaine. Happy belated birthday Ms. Shirley.
1 Officially the last year of the cinema’s Classic era was 1960 and Jane Fonda made her debut that year with just one movie, Tall Story. At the age of 14 in 1949 Julie Andrews performed a voice role in The Rose of Bagdad but did not make another movie until 1964. Shirley MacLaine however made her debut in 1955 in Hitchcock’s The Trouble with Harry and went on to make another 11 films within the Classic Era. Accordingly I have always regarded Shirley as the last great female star with a substantial body of work in the Classic Era to debut in that era.
2 VIDEO COMMENTS
(1) Given the longevity of Shirley’s career and as she has 49 films listed on Bruce’s page I was surprised that you only included 20 of her movies in your presentation.(2) However all 3 of my favourite Shirley MacLaine movies were there – The Sheepman was at No 13 and Terms of Endearment and The Apartment were your Top 2. (3) Bruce and you were agreed on 3 of the Top 5. He caught me slightly off guard by placing Being There albeit very marginally above The Apartment and The Children’s Hour [aka The Loudest Whisper] above Terms of Endearment.
(4) The usual fine range of original posters with the pick for me being those for Ask Any Girl, Gambit and The Sheepman. (5) 3 magnificent stills from Around the World in 80 Days,
Irma La Douce, and The Trouble with Harry and a 4th very classy one of Jack and Shirley in The Apartment. (6) Despite its brevity the video overall was good fun so 9.1
3 IMDB ranks Shirley as the 14th greatest screen actress of all time and she is ranked 6th in Bruce’s 25 Greatest Screen Legends 1950-2010though you of course do not recognise the latter survey as a true reflection of greatness. However IMDB and Bruce are pretty close in relation to Shirley because when only those actresses who debuted in the 1950-2010 period are taken into account IMDB lists Shirley 5th.
Thank you Bob, your views and observations are always of interest to me even if I don’t always agree with them. What a boring world it would be if we all agreed with each other! 🙂
Yes this should have been a Top 30 easily, I rushed this through after the Xmas holidays I should have taken my time. I had the impression that she was a minor support in many of her later films and didn’t include them. I think I’ve listed most of her best films though and I did study Bruce’s chart as I wasn’t very familiar with MacLaine’s filmography.
Glad you liked the posters and stills and your favorites were on there. Shirley MacLaine has been around quite a bit, she’s a well loved actress and very popular in her time, she deserves her place on Bruce’s Screen Legends page.

Cheers Bob.
Hey Steve…..thanks for a video link….to your latest You Tube video. Glad you agree that Shirley deserves a spot on the 1950 – 2010 list. It is amazing but the most recent MacLaine roles have been leads again. The lady is like the Engerizer Bunny…she just keeps going and going.
Hey Bob…..good review on Steve’s MacLaine video. Good to know that I am close to the IMDb list. This list is very subjective….but I think MacLaine HAS to be on the Top 25 list. Heck her career is still going on. Which is amazing considering she was in Hitchcock movie over 60 years ago.
I guess if I tweaked my Top 25 legends list…..then I could move it to 1960 to 2010. That would make the list interesting to see….though the classic list would get pretty crowded….though Loy’s spot as “Greastest Box Office Star Of All-Time” would guarantee a spot for her…lol.
