  1. How about a page for Aldo Ray? Raoul Walsh? Michael Powell & Emeric Pressberger? Looking forward to ’63 and the rest. Love the site. Too bad you can’t add a production cost page as well: or maybe it’s in the works…?

    1. Hey Mark….thanks for the suggestions…..I will add them to the list. I think 1932 is next and then 1963…as I have already started the 1932 research. Production costs would be a fun one to look at….have a few thousand of those in database for those classic years. One day. Good stuff.

    1. Hey Steve….not sure how they got in this time….more zombies in the Walking Dead compound…..Sheriff Rick has cleaned the compound again.

    1. Hey Steve….I see you waving……but the comments are far from being back to normal. The website is registering almost 100 spam comments a hour…it is making it real hard to find “real” comments. The new settings are keeping almost all comments off the website…..which was not the plan….just wanted to keep spam comments off the website. Going back to the drawing board.

      1. Bruce, I can’t understand what these pathetic b*stards hope to gain by spamming you. They don’t seem to be linking anything. Are they trying to cripple the site or slow it down?

        Best of luck.

        Steve.

        1. Hey Steve….this open comment box is so appealing to them…..they do not have to prove they are human…..there are 1000s of pages to attack……actually surprised we were able to keep them out of the hen house so long.

  2. UMR is the greatest. I have added 567 movies to my see/see again list. I got these from your top 500(really top 1000) UMR site. I got the top 1000 UMR, the top 1000 box office, the top 1000 Oscar nominees, and the top 1000 reviews all from one site using the sortable ability you provide. edited for what I have not seen or remember (I am getting old). I took your suggestion of letterboxd to keep track of it all. I have been blessed to watch over 50 of these . I am following your example and using the public library . yea Cogerson, yea WofC. I cannot thank you enough. I now see mostly very good or great movies all the time.

    1. Hey bob cox…..thanks for the awesome comment on UMR…..it is greatly appreciated….even though now I am stuck in my office unable to get my big head through the door….lol. Glad you have found Letterboxd……it is one of my favorite movie websites out there….and perfect for somebody that likes to watch movies….I have been there since 2014. The power of the public library…..I imagine I have watched close to 2000 movies from my library in the last 3 or 4 years….free and variety….what more could you ask for. Glad our page is getting you to mostly good or great movies. Great comment!

  3. HI BRUCE 1. I am still enjoying using the new correction button and having fun trying to beat the clock. It was in the back of my mind that I had once seen that device used in a movie but couldn’t immediately recall which one, and then it struck me.

2 William Castle was a B movie director well known for his gimmicks with his movies. For example my Joan was in the 1964 Strait Jacket directed by Castle and as that one was about axe murders Castle had my poor has-been Joan appear among audiences out of the blue at some premiers and threaten the audience with a rubber axe. Crawford would swathe her way towards the screen where Castle would cower pretending to be terrified and calling for help.

3 Joan had never heard of him before that picture and apparently didn’t think much of him after it. This was after all the woman who had worked with legendary directors such as George Cukor and Robert Aldridge. Thus are the mighty fallen!

4 Anyway it has suddenly occurred to me that it was in Castle’s 1961 Homicidal that I first came across your “beat the clock” device. When the heroine is about to go into the house for the big climax, there was a one-minute “Fright Break” in which producer/director William Castle advised the audience that anyone too scared to see the climax could go into the lobby and get their money back. For this gimmick, Columbia shipped a cardboard “Coward’s Corner” to theatres playing the film. Supposedly, audience members too frightened to see the climax could go to the “Coward’s Corner” and wait there until the film ended. On one corner of the screen was a ticking clock that audiences had to beat if they wanted their money back. Apparently nobody took up Castle’s offer and were probably not intended to.

5 In an episode of the TV series Diagnosis Murder detective Dick Van Dyke dupes a murderer into revealing himself by using a trick that Sherlock played in one of the Holmes stories and Dick humorously says to his son “I only steal from the best.” If Castle’s Homicidal gimmick gave you the idea of a ticking clock my Joan would probably say that you steal from the worst! However because of low budgets and the gimmicks Castle’s films were reasonably profitable and he did produce but not direct Rosemary’s Baby.

    1. Hey Bob…..glad you are enjoying the “beat the clock” comment box. Good story on Castle and Joan. Earlier in a comment…Donny Osmond got a shout out…now Dick Van Dyke and Diagnosis Murder get one…..love it. Good stuff as always.
