Sondra Locke Movies

12/13/2018 – Got home from work, checked the internet and saw the sad news of Sondra Locke’s passing.   So, quickly put together this tribute page to her and her movie career.   Rest in peace Sondra Locke. Sondra Locke (1944-2018) was an Oscar®-nominated American actress and director.   Growing up, I thought Sondra Locke was one of the most popular actresses working.   Being a huge Clint Eastwood fan, certainly elevated her stature in my eyes.   Eastwood and Locke would make 6 movies together between 1976 and 1983.  Her IMDb page shows 30 acting credits from 1968-2017. This page will rank 16 Sondra Locke movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.

  1. HI BRUCE

It would be nice ot have your book in hard copy as well as on screen.

I have always got the impression that some stars like DeNiro, Sir Maurice and Willis were happy to star in a lot of “dogs” so that the dollars in their bank accounts could keep piling up, which is why I always thought that The Master was a bit unfair in singling out ole Mumbles for criticism over his earnings.

However all 4 of those guys did have their classics. I will never forget Willis’ 6th Sense and John McClane has become a household character with Die Hard even TOPPING Empire Magazine’s list of greatest Xmas movies ever [see my next post]. Anyway I always like Sir Maurice’s upbeat attitude to making movies just for the money, which if you recall was “I’ve never seen Jaws 4 but I’ve seen the house that it built for me!”

Generally speaking one MUST set standard criteria as you do and stick to it but sometimes there is the anomaly that a massive star like Willis can fall through the cracks and not get his proper recognition.

    1. Hey Bob…..working on getting it in paper back. It would be so cool to have “my book” among my massive movie book collection. Speaking of 6th Sense….about to watch that with DoC2 later today. We watched Die Hard last weekend. Gotta get her aware of the greatness of Bruce early in her life. Good stuff.

      1. HI BRUCE

You “fanatics” seem to brainwash your kids into adopting your own tastes! My son in law is a stalwart supporter of Liverpool Football Club in England and he has his son following that club now. I knew a Sergeant when I worked for The British Army as a civilian employee and he too supported Liverpool Football Club and he brought his son up the same way. Where did I go wrong that my own son hates Laddie son much?!

Thanks for your feedback on my other post today. As usual you have given me things to chew on.

          1. HI BRUCE

I like upbeat comments such as that and I always try to think of some movie scene that bears some relation to the situation.

The nearest I can come up with is 1958’s The Long hot Summer in which Anthony Franciosa, Orson Welles son in the movie, is in a feud with his father so he locks Orson in a barn and then sets fire to it, but relents and let’s Welles out.

I wouldn’t want to go through a real life incident in which I was watching a Ladd movie and my son set fire to the room, locked me in and then had second thoughts about the matter.

However if I am ever again watching Laddie when my son is about I’ll make sure Joel’s book is not in the room concerned!

  2. When actor Gary Merrill married Bette Davis he became known as Mr Bette Davis; John Agar was referred to at times as Mr Shirley Temple when he got hitched to the legendary child star; Myrna Loy was often thought of as Mrs Nick Charles[a fictitious screen wife]; Bruce Willis on tying the knot was looked upon as Mr Demi Moore while their marriage lasted; and Richard Burton is reported to have said “When I got into bed with Elizabeth I was broke and when I got out of the bed again I was worth one million dollars!”

In fairness to Willis, Loy and Burton they were also successful in their own right but the careers of Merrill and Agar never went anywhere in terms of stardom. Certainly Sondra’s heyday revolved round the Eastwood/Locke era. Of the 7 films in the table above that crashed the Cogerson “magical 100 million dollars barrier” 6 were with Sondra’s husband and “beau”. The other 9 movies in the table collectively grossed a mere $37 million domestically averaging out at just $4 million per movie.

I never liked the “which way” films and the Eastwood/Locke teaming that most impressed me was Sudden Impact in which Sondra excellently played a revenge-obsessed serial killer [but one with a good cause on her side]. I agree with Steve that she was good too as “a foul-mouthed prostitute” in The Gauntlet, though being around Clint would have ensured that she knew the choice words to use! She was nominated for 8 various awards but regretfully never won an award. At the time of her sad death Sondra had a net worth of $10 million.

Bruce is to be congratulated for again assembling at short notice a tribute to a just-departed movie star and one of the advantages of being a follower of this site is that a facility is handily available for paying one’s personal respects to deceased performers who have provided one with entertainment. Therefore RIP.

    1. Hey Bob….thanks for checking out our Sondra Locke tribute page. She and Clint were never actually married. They were Kurt and Goldie for over a decade. Their ending was one of the worst break ups ever…..lots and lots of mud thrown. As much as she had issues with Clint….seems there were some positives.

As a kid….I was a pre-teen when his comedy ape movies came out….I confuse…to a 10 year old those movies were comedy gold. As an adult…I find them hard to watch. In Every Which Way But Loose….Clint is a stalker pure and simple….and he is the hero of the movie? If it was made today…the movie would end up with him in jail as a stalker.

I agree she is outstanding in Sudden Impact….that is probably the best acting peformance in any of the Dirty Harry movies….excluding Jim Carrey as a drug addict in The Dead Pool of course. Good information on Burton. Thanks for the feedback. RIP Sondra Locke

    2. HI BRUCE

Thanks for feedback and for reminding me that Clint and Sondra never married. I had forgotten that though of course it doesn’t affect the principle of the matter in relation to how real-life partnerships involving the two genders can have a knock-on effect on acting careers – ie the perceived junior partner can suffer derision as in the case of Gary Merrill or can benefit enormously from the relationship as in the case of Burton whose career was in the doldrums until the Taylor-related publicity helped lift it to new heights.

I was of course only trying to wind you up about Willis because he was always going to be a big star in his own right and Moore was in fact the lesser star. Implying that Bill Powell’s character “carried” Loy to stardom was also a joke and untrue – it was little Asta that did that -aided and abetted in modern time by the “fake news” of the Cogerson site !!

Actually I always felt sorry for Merrill because it is my understanding that he was very much involved in human rights activities [for example joining marches to promote Black voter registration]. Your comments about the vicious split between Clint and Sondra ring true because I have long understood that he treated her very badly towards the end .

Anyway have a good weekend and take care. I am still waiting for my daughter to come down and download from my existing computer all my movie material to my new laptop. When she does that she has also promised to buy your new book for me through the links that you have helpfully provided. It’s to be part of my Christmas present and I’m looking forward to it. After all a book that takes its inspiration from The Master MUST be a cracker !!

      1. Hey Bob. Good stuff about Gary Merrill. I have seen a few of his movies. I have yet to bite on the Mr. Demi Moore tag…when they were together….their box office results were amazing. Since their break up Bruce has had the better success….but now….neither can claim much box office juice. Hope your daughter gets you and your computer going. Actually have an appointment tomorrow to see about getting my “e-book” actually printed. I think that would be even cooler.

Bruce did not crack my Top 50….actually using my formula for these rankings…he did not even crack the Top 300….so sad. I did do something in the book that I liked. What do you think?

Bruce Willis Movies Sorted by UMR Scores
        90-100 11 movies
        80-89 10 movies
        70-79 7 movies
        60-69 4 movies
        50-59 2 movies
        40-49 8 movies
        30-39 7 movies
        20-29 5 movies
        10-19 5 movies
        0 – 9 12 movies

Sad that Bruce has more movies at the bottom ranking than he does at the top ranking.
