Steve’s 1952 video has entertained me to the tune of 99% because of its overall excellence with the one disappointment being the absence of Ladd’s Thunder in the East.
But in fairness to Steve I must confess that none of my usual professional sources call that film a noir and all they are split about is whether it is a 1951 or 1952 film. But then we on this site all know how often Steve and The Work Horse tie themselves in knots over release dates.
Speaking of WH he seems to be getting way behind on many things [if he ever gets there at all]. For example I see it has now been a long 4 months since he has commented [at least on this site] on any of Steve’s videos. Think of what WH has been missing! – but then “There are none so blind as those who will not see.” [which the dictionary explains mean “those who will not look.”]
Actually to give myself plenty of time I often like to prepare in advance if I can for what I anticipate Steve will be bringing on next. Accordingly when his 1952 noirs video emerged I had already a piece written about Thunder in the East, admittedly more in hope than conviction that it would make the cut.
But as the saying goes “waste not, want not” and as my piece is, as Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson said about his Brexit deal with the European Union “baked and oven-ready” I think it will do no harm to throw-in that piece anyway for good measure and I do that in Part 2 of this post. Statham fans, forget about Jace for a short while: instead enjoy reading about how a legendary action-hero Maestro plied his craft!
Stewart Granger, is the # 71 most connected actor of the 1960’s, and the # 97 most connected of the 1950’s.
HI BIG BOY!
Thanks for your further feedback which was a follows:
“Hey Bob thanks for the tally count…that is good enough for second place. Tallies- Dan 25, Bob 17, Flora 16, Steve 15 and Cogerson at 4.”
I don’t know what it’s like in the US but over here millions compete in the National Lottery including W o Bob and I.
I recall reading once that the professional number crunchers opine that the individual on average has more chance of being struck by lightning that of winning big in the Lottery,
However I feel that those are good odds compared with the chances of beating BOTH Dan and Flora individually in any one “have seen” movies tally count.
That guy with the wooden spoon that you mention in the current tally though: I’d take him on any time!!
Also: Four that I very much liked that are NOT in WH’s tables
1/Commando [aka The Legion’s Last patrol] 1962. One of Stew’s post-Hollywood ‘foreign films heralding the end of his top-star days. 73% rated by IMDB. Not a box office hit but its beautiful haunting theme tune called The Legion’s Last Patrol was a big hit in the music charts.
2/British crime drama The Secret Partner 1961. 66% rated by IMDB. My kind of film.
3/Joint Brit/Yank project 1958’s Harry Black and the Tiger aka Harry Black. 62% rated by IMDB
4/Stew’s Brit Film Industry days 1945’s Waterloo Road [aka Blue for Waterloo] co-starring a top-billed Sir Johnnie Mills and Alastair Sim. Highlight of the film: a fist- fight between patriotic Sir Johnnie and bully-boy Stew because if I recall correctly the latter has been cuckolding Mills while he has been away serving his country. Stew was always in his element as the sneering bad guy – see also for example All the Bros Were Valiant. Waterloo Road is 66% rated by IMDB.
Granger to The Cowboy of the Century his brother in All the Bros Were Valiant: “Remember when we were growing up I was always able to take all your toys away from you.”
Cowboy of the Century: “Well we ARE grown up now.”
Granger leads a mutiny and gets command of Robert Taylor’s ship locking Taylor and his loyal crew members in the brig. He sneers at The Cowboy “I told you I can still take your toys away from you.”
Taylor subsequently escapes, acquires arms for him and the loyalists and regains control of the ship. “I’m taking all my toys back now.” He says to Stew.
Hey Bob….sorry that I was unable to include the four movies you menitoned….looks like Commando/The Legion’s Last Patrol is the one to track down. Good stuff.
HI STEVE: All great minds think alike though mine was a bit slower than yours initially. Immediately I had submitted the post I remembered the James Stewart/Jimmy aspect but a knock came to the door and when I got back to my laptop it was too late make to make the correction. Maybe The Work Horse should look at providing a pause button so that the 5 mins allotted doesn’t run out during distractions.
I have beaten you by just a nose: 17-have seens to your 15. My list is below. Memories of King Solomon’s Mines particularly will always be with me. When I was about 10 my 30-year-old aunt was discussing the film with her sisters and she said to them that you could tell the Granger and Kerr “fancied each other” in the movie because “they kept making eyes at each other”. I hadn’t back then of course knowledge of the story that you told us previously or I could have informed my aunt that Stew and Debs also fancied each other off-screen as well!!
GRANGER 17 MOVIES IN THE ABOVE TABLES THAT I HAVE SEEN
King Solomon’s Mines
Scaramouche – my fave one
North to Alaska
Prisoner of Zenda
The Last Hunt
All the Bros were Valiant – a bit fave with my dad.

Hey Bob….thanks for the tally count…that is good enough for second place. Tallies- Dan 25, Bob 17, Flora 16, Steve 15 and Cogerson at 4. Thanks for the mini-reviews as well. Good stuff.
