Sometime in 2016, I came up with the idea to do a Best Teaching Movie Page. Since I work at a school, I figured I would do two pages. One would be the standard UltimateMovieRankings.com page that would be the best statistical Teaching Movies using box office grosses, reviews and award recognition as the criteria for the rankings.
The second page would be a survey/vote/poll of what actual teachers thought were the best Teaching Movies. That was the plan. I started collecting data almost 15 months ago. I would ask the teachers….”What is the best Teaching Movie?” Any movie they named, I wrote down regardless of the order of preference they named.
In the end, I collected 74 different movies that got 1,449 votes. Clearly there are more than 74 teaching movies…this is just the Teaching Movies that they named. So what follows is a countdown to their Top Teaching Movie. Some of the movies have “quotes” by teachers that are paraphrased by me. I apologize in advance if I did not properly articulate some of these quotes. I wish now I had written down those thoughts. To see the sister site of this one….check out Best Teaching Movies Statistically.

TOP 10 FAVORITE TEACHERS’ TEACHING MOVIES
10th Place – Dangerous Minds (1995) 44 Votes. Plot Summary – An ex-Marine turned teacher struggles to connect with her students in an inner-city school. Our thoughts: – Rarely was Dangerous Minds listed as someone’s favorite…but whenever somebody started listing other favorite teaching movies…this one got lots of shout outs. Though many times it was referred to as “that Michelle Pfeiffer marine teaching movie.”
9th Place – Mona Lisa Smile (2003) 48 Votes. Plot Summary –A free-thinking art professor teaches conservative 1950s Wellesley girls to question their traditional social roles. Plot Summary – Will Hunting (Matt Damon), a janitor at M.I.T., has a gift for mathematics but needs help from a psychologist (Robin Williams) to find direction in his life. Jessica E. thoughts: – “You realize that Robin was Damon’s psychologist and not his teacher in Good Will Hunting?” This was after I, the supposed movie guy, told her, that this was one of three times Robin played a teacher in a movie. Sadly, I have been telling people that error for the last 18 months. Maybe it is time to see that movie again.
5th Place – Dead Poets Society (1989) 75 Votes. Plot Summary – English teacher John Keating (Robin Williams) inspires his students to look at poetry with a different perspective of authentic knowledge and feelings. Plot Summary – The dedicated but tyrannical Joe Clark is appointed the principal of a decaying inner-city school and he is determined to improve by any and all means. 1st Place – Stand and Deliver (1988) 126 Votes. Plot Summary – The story of Jaime Escalante, a high school teacher who successfully inspired his dropout prone students to learn calculus. Our thoughts: – Not only was this movie named the most, it was normally named first. The adjectives used to describe this movie were sensational. One of the disadvantages of our voting system is that it was not weighted to take into account the teacher’s preference. If it had been weighted….then Stand and Deliver would have doubled the 2nd place movie, Freedom Writers.

Stephens, Tammy S., Ryan T., Kimberly T., Linda T., Shane U., Richard W., George V. – I get the privilege of working with most of these teachers everyday.
Hey, this is so good, learning thoughts. I especially liked the comment about your grandmother, of the movie The Song of Bernadette, Elizabeth Rohr who died 20 years ago yesterday and your dad 6 1/2 years yesterday. You have some wonderful new ideas for your web site. Keep up the good work and all the best on your site in 2018 and on……………………..You mentioned so many wonderful movies.
Hey Bern1960…..glad you found this page….I figured it was more than time to give Elizabeth Rohr some UMR attention. Hard to believe she has been gone that long. Thanks for the kind words and the visit….both are greatly appreciated.
Love this list. has 30 of my top 35. I saw 45. got to expand the list: Animal House, Ferris Beuller, Blind Side(do tutors count? okay I understand all the teachers were bad) . Blues Brothers( save the school, the penguin) , Cowboys (starts in a school house, less of a reach than the Graduate, gotta get John Wayne in there), Uncle Buck ( the principal, the little boys bathroom, great coming of age and lesson s of life movie). I hope I helped the comedy side, I love to laugh(song from Marry Poppins). I have taught Sunday school 7 years, coached basketball 7 seasons, lectured as a pediatrician , and I am a high school drop out. does my vote count ? LOL!!!!!!! thanks for making my day (never mind).
Hey bob cox…..glad you enjoyed this page. Sunday school teachers count too. So I will have to add in your additions. I think The Cowboys is a huge stretch…..I think Trouble Along The Way might be a better Wayne pick. As for The Graduate….a non-movie fan offer up this selection. I can see the logic….the title suggestion a school environment. And on the other side of the coin….Mrs. Robinson teaches little Benjamin lots of stuff. I think lots of students would have loved to have Mrs. Robinson as their teacher…lol.
Currently our database is out of commission. So I can not add in more movies to a table….but I plan on expanding the Teacher stat page with lots of movies. Good feedback as always.
This was a fun page to read. Sad to see my favorite teaching movie rated so low in my teaching alumni’s eyes. Conrack is a wonderful movie. I actually use movies in my class. This site is a good one. http://www.teachwithmovies.org/
Thank you Mrs. Singleton. Sorry your comment needed me to approved it…but the link you sent it to a holding area for me to approve. I really liked that link…..I wish I would have had teachers like you. One of the teachers I work with used Interstellar that way. He told the students the good science and the bad science. The students loved it.
Shocked that Whiplash did not get a single vote. J.K. Simmons won an Oscar for the role and gives a great performance. The only thing keeping that from greatness is the weak ending. Love this page. Third Daughter of Cogerson
Hey Katie…..Wow….you are correct…..that recent multi-winning Oscar movie got no love from the teacher. Gladys Cooper of The Song Of Bernadette got some….so really mean teachers made the poll….but no love for J.K. Simmons……I will add it into the stat table….thanks for the help and thanks for the visit.
Interesting. Even though I do not comment often, I am multi-time daily connoisseur of this website. So while on your Site Index and looking for your Star Trek page, I happened to notice this page. Then when I went back to it, there were more movies listed. So I have concluded you are working on this one. Hopefully my accessing the page did not cause you any extra work. Keep the good work, looks like a another winner.
Hey In The Shadows……you caught me. I actually worked on this page from Friday evening to Sunday morning…..it is almost 5,000 words…..one of the longest pages I have ever written…..and there are no box office stats…imagine that!….lol. Your visit did not mess me up at all. I published the page without it being finished because it was easier for me to access the page that way. Surprised you found it….but kudos to you. Good to know that you are visiting the site on a regular basis. WoC did some computer programs that show only about 1 to 2 percent of the people that visit the site comment….which means 98 to 99 percent of the people stay in the shadows with you. Thanks for the visit and the comment.
