  1. I got my first video machine in 1990 and started watching home movies that year. Two of the actresses with whom I first became acquainted via videos were Teri Garr and Teri Polo [of the Meet the Parents/Fockers franchise].

I watched them both for the first time in the same week around 1994, Garr in Richard Dreyfuss’ 1989 Let it Ride and Polo in a minor 1993 movie called Aspen Extreme. As I had become acquainted with those two ladies almost simultaneously, as they both had blonde hair in roles where I saw them, and as above all they had the same Christian name naturally I got them mixed up for some time though Garr had been acting for nearly 30 years before Polo.

GARR 1 acting award/5 noms, net worth $4 million plus “Master Love”
POLO 1 acting award and 3 noms, net worth $800 thousand

Teri Garr is I gather now retired at the age of 71 and made her last big screen appearance in 2007 and gave her final TV performance in 2011. With almost half a century in movies and a massively prolific television CV she has certainly earned her Cogerson page. Indeed dare you NOT have honoured her given that Garr has received “Master Love” which of course trupms even an Oscar?

[BRUCE I was actually going to make the Joel quote that you did before spotting that you had posted it. It would seem that since you gave me that book you and I are competing to worship at the feet of The Master so I’ll get one up on you for now by appending the following additional quote from The Great One-

“(Garr in 1983’s Mr Mom) showed an intelligent awareness of when to underplay, and when to grab her laugh. Garr’s versatility is already admirable and she’s just beginning.” Mr Mumbles probably would have killed for praise like that from One so Great!]

    1. Hey Bob. First of all…wiping away the tears…..seeing you reading and quoting Joel is such a happy thing to see. I almost wish I had sent a better copy of the book….versus the duct taped, falling apart book I sent you.

I had to look up Teri Polo after reading your comment….as I could not place her….but one look at a picture and I knew who she was. I can easily see you getting them mixed up.

Garr is retired….she has MS…..she worked with it for a longtime…..before retiring a few years ago.

Check off another subject completed from the Joel book….closing in on 300 completed. Good comment as always.

  2. When I was younger Teri was such a nice girl as a regular on the Sonny and Cher show and I remember her lying down the ground in a western within the Monkee’s Head, I think with Davy Jones. But then she deserted Richard Dreyfuss in Close Encounters and doesn’t really support her husband John Denver in Oh God. Let it Ride was one of my ten best of 1989.

Teri is # 375 on the December 15, 2018 Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list. Here’s who she worked with on that list.

    1. Hey Dan
      1. Awesome lists…..thanks for putting them together.
      2. So she still has a good spot on the list…I like that…always liked here.
      3. Interesting point about not being too supportive to her husbands in Oh God and Close Encounters of the Third Kind….I had not thought about that before.
      4. She does a much better job of being supportive in Let It Ride and Mr. Mom.
      5. Glad to see you mention liking Let It Ride. To me that is one of the better comedies….I used to be into horse racing (loved the stats….and had a system that actually worked)…and the people shown in the movie were people I saw at the track. Granted…many many people strongly dislike Let It Ride…including somebody near and dear to me…WoC….lol.
      6. Massive first list. Looks like the Oracle people have resolved their IMDb issue.
      7. Allen Garfield (a Let It Ride co-star) is her most frequent co-star with 4 movies…but many people have 3 movies with her.
      8. 35 Oscar winners is a pretty good total….especially when more than half of her movies are television roles.
      9. I did not include The Player in her table….that movie is never included in the rankings…….but it is in her IMDb list.
      Good stuff as always.

  3. I saw 15 including top 11. 10s and favorites: tootsie, Michael, close encounters, young Frankenstein. 10 not a favourite : the conversation. hidden gem: after hours. forgotten gem: the black stallion. not on UMR is what a way to go a 9 and favourite, and scoobie doo aloha.

    1. Hey bob….well…you are the winner so far…I have seen 14 of her movies, while Flora has seen 7. Close Encounters is one of my favorite Garr movies….but her character does not really have much to do in the movie. Good to see you list After Hours as a hidden gem….I have seen that movie many many times. It is one of the few Martin Scorsese movies that I like to regularly watch…Goodfellas is the other. The rest…I rarely seem to be in the mood to watch Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or Mean Streets. I will have to see what is going on with the two movies you mentioned. Good feedback as always.

      1. Hey bob cox…she was uncredited in What A Way To Go…as for Scoobie Doo Aloha…having a problem figuring that movie out.

  4. I have seen 7 Teri Garr movies.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is Tootsie.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is The Moonshine War

    Favourite Teri Garr Movies:

    Young Frankenstein
    Tootsie
The Conversation – in your co-star column Gene Hackman is listed only as “G”; he is the star…
    The Black Stallion

Other Teri Garr Movies I have seen:

    O God!
Head – big Monkees fan, but not a fan of the movie
The Moonshine War – not a favourite Richard Widmark movie

    1. Hey Flora….thanks for checking out our Teri Garr page. 7 is exactly half of my total…which is pretty considering she made most of her movies after 1976.

I am not sure I knew you had not seen Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I knew about Star Wars…but not this sci-fi classic. I figured you would have seen the Widmark movie.

Hmmmm…co-star issues….well…I gave Gene the top spot in The Conversation…..but he lost his spot on Young Frankenstein……not sure how I missed those errors….but thanks for the catch.

Head is a strange strange movie….and a hard one to finish. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Teri Garr.

  5. “A lively natural, unstagy performer, Teri Garr lights up the screen whenever she appears.” – Rating Movie Stars

Hirschhorn 4 Star Teri Garr performances

    1974’s Young Frankenstein
    1974’s The Conversation
    1982’s Tootsie

    1. Always good to get Joel’s 2 cents in. I have seen 14 of her movies or 44%. I used to have such a crush on her in the 1980s. She was a regular on David Letterman back then and she always seem to be in good spirits. My Top 5 Teri Garr movies.

#1 Close Encounters of the Third Kind…one of my favorite movies….it is a shame she is not in the second half of the movie
#2 After Hours – the night life of New York City has never been shown more crazy than this Martin Scorsese movie
#3 Mr. Mom – Michael Keaton at his best
#4 Let It Ride – the Dreyfuss/Garr reunion is very lowly rated here….but it is a comedy that makes me laugh everytime I see it.
      #5 Tootsie/Young Frankenstein….both are fine movies….but barely get into my Top 5.
