  1. In my humble opinion, Tom Hanks is the modern day Jimmy Stewart. Capable without being flashy; can be cast in almost any role and succeed; extremely likable to almost everybody. You’ve Got Mail is my wife and mine favorite, with Polar Express coming in a close second. Good job here.

    1. Hey Mr. Archer…..I agree that Tom Hanks is probably as close as we have to James Stewart……my wife loves You’ve Got Mail as well….and Polar Express is required viewing every Xmas…..my kids love to crank up the volume on Polar Express and watch the first scene when the train arrives….they make the whole house shake. I appreciate the visit and the comment.

  2. Tom Hanks is my favorite actor of all time. I recently applied for a blogging job and they required that applicants write on this subject: “If you could have dinner with any famous person, who would it be and why?” I wrote about dinner with Tom Hanks. I won’t claim to have seen ALL of his movies, but I have seen most. The Green Mile is my favorite, followed by Forrest Gump. My least favorite is Charlie Wilson’s war. I HATED that movie, although he did play the part really well, but that is the sign of a true actor. I hate politics and I think that’s why I hate that movie! Your hub is very interesting, I didn’t know Forrest Gump was his #1 movie. Thank you for sharing this!

    1. Hey Lindalou1963….I am right there with you about Tom Hanks…I have seen all of these movies except for his latest…..Extremely Close and Uncomfortable Loud…..he joins my Top 5 actors of all time with Cary Grant, Bruce Willis, Michael Caine and Harrison Ford.

That is very cool that you picked writing about Hanks for a job interview…so did you get the blogging job? Thanks for the visit and the comment.

  3. I enjoyed reading this and learned some facts I didn’t know before – such as that Tom Hanks was in the Fonz. Not sure which of his movies I liked the best, but I’d probably agree with Jools that it’s the comedies.

    And congratulations on your award!

    1. Hey Melovy….thanks for the comment and the kudos about my reward….I am glad you like his connection to Happy Days and the Fonz…I have thought a hub on shows stars appeared on before they became famous would be interesting..

Hanks on Happy Days, Harrison Ford in Leave It To Beaver, Jack Nicholson in The Andy Griffith Show, David Letterman in Mork and Mindy…are just some of the ones that pop into my mind.

I agree with you and Jools his comedies were awesome back in the 1980s….thanks for stopping by.

  4. Tom Hanks has grown on me over the years, though I still feel like he shouts a lot in some movies. I can watch him in Forrest Gump til the cows come home and I quite liked him in Big. I seem to prefer him on more comedic roles.

    1. Hey Jools99….thanks for the comment and the visit. I remember back in the 1980s when he was pretty much considered only as a comedic actor…..but I loved those movies….Splash, Bachelor Party, The Money Pit, The Burbs, Volunteers and The Man With One Red Shoe…might not have been the best movies but I liked them….but his serious actor run has been very impressive as well. Seems that his movies have stopped being “event” movies….maybe Cloud Atlas (his next movie…..6 minute trailer is out there now) or Saving Mr. Banks (he plays Walt Disney) will give him a rebound.

  5. Glad to read this page Cogerson. In one of my reviews (of Apollo 13) I said that at the time of its release, I wasn’t even a fan of Tom Hanks. What was I thinking?!? My only excuse is that in the mid 90’s when Apollo 13 came out, I hadn’t been to the cinema much for several years so I’d not seen very much of his work.

However, since Apollo 13 came out the appeal of Tom Hanks for me has grown with each movie I’ve seen. He’s such a versatile actor, not afraid to take on any role however unglamorous it may be, and he always turns in an attractive and thoughtful performance. I’ve enjoyed several of his movies, even those with storylines which may not normally appeal to me, such as ‘Big’, ‘Philadelphia’ and ‘ A League of Their Own’. Others – notably ‘Private Ryan’, ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ and above all, the aforementioned ‘Apollo 13’ are among my all-time favourites.

In interviews I would say he also comes across as an articulate and likeable human being without much of a filmstar ego, though I suspect he’s a thorough and quite demanding professional on set.

Nice to read through this list of his acting roles, Cogerson, and interesting to see how all of these films score.

    Alun

    1. Hey Alun….thanks for checking out my Tom Hanks hub. Glad to see you have seen the error of your ways and have gotten on the Tom Hanks bandwagon…..lol. I thought his early comedy years were fun(Bachelor Party, The Burbs, Money Pit, Volunteers, Splash, and The Man With One Red Shoe) but ever since Nothing in Common his roles have turned into more serious movies which I like but are not as fun as the early ones. Thanks for the comment and the compliment they are greatly appreciated.
