Tony had a theater company in New York back in the 90’s and I went to a show with called A Little Hotel on the Side which starred Tony, Lynn Redgrave, Rob Lowe and the immortal John Beal. Beal was a leading man back in the 1930’s at RKO (he’s second billed to Katherine Hepburn in the Little Minister back in 1934). He was in his early 80’s when I saw him but he’s not the actor I’ve seen in a show from the earliest time in the movies. That honor goes to Mickey Rooney in Sugar Babies (with Ann Miller). But I digress. Tony is not on the Oracle of Bacon top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list. On the original list in 2000 he was # 895. The following actors on the 2016 list worked with him;

A woman I work with as a volunteer at the nursing home went out to dinner to celebrate the 80th birthday of one of her friends in the neighborhood here. One of the 80 year olds friends who was at the party was the man who was the best man at her wedding. He brought his wife along too and their daughter who happened to be Renee Zellwegger (in my neighborhood). My niece used to live across the street from her in Manhattan.
Hey Dan
1. Thanks for the three lists of information on Tony Randall.
2. Not surprised that is not on the current 1000….but kind of surprised he made the first list….granted #895 is almost not making that one too.
3. Good memories of his theater….I remember him talking about those shows when he was a frequent guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
4. Rod Lowe on stage? Sounds interesting.
5. For the first time I noticed Taylor Negron on the list….I was recently reading a book on Robin Williams….and Taylor was one of Robin’s party buddies during the Mork and Mindy years…..Negron’s greatest cinema might be delivering pizza to Sean Penn in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
6. So Bess Flowers was in my favorite Randall movie…The 7 Faces of Doctor Lao……cool trivia.
7. Only 15 Oscar winning co-stars…..seems low…..but I guess he was more of a television star than a movie man.
8. Awesome story on Renee Z. Thanks for sharing that…..and the rest of this awesome trivia.
I’ve only seen 6 of the 25 films on the chart, my favorite – The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao, a childhood favorite, though its been years since I last watched it.
I also enjoyed Gremlins 2, Tony Randall was the voice of the Brain Gremlin.
Nice work Bruce. Vote Up.
Hey Steve
1. Thanks for checking out our Tony Randall page.
2. Tally count….we have a tie at 10, between myself and Flora.
3. Glad to see you mention The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao….I only recently discovered and became a fan of that movie. I just saw it about 6 months ago.
4. Ok…just looked it up….I saw The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao almost 14 months ago….my quick review of that movie.
“I really enjoyed this movie. This might be the highlight of Tony Randall’s movie career. In this one he gets to play 7 different roles….and the makeup is outstanding each time. I loved the special effects, loved the story and had a blast watching this one. Not sure how I had never heard of this movie…but I am glad that I now know and like this movie.”
5. I actually think Gremlins 2 has aged better than Gremlins…….I might be alone in that thought process.
Good stuff as always.
Glad to see you like his Dr. Lao movie. Loved that movie as a kid. The makeup on Tony was amazing. The special effects are equally impressive back then. Never figured out why the movie never developed a following.
Hey Steven…. I actually only recently saw The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao….but it really impressesed me. I agree 100% with your comment…the makeup job was phenomenal. I also agree it does not have a following….maybe that is changing…..at least two of us are talking about the movie.
