When I awoke this morning I was sadden to see the news that movie director Tony Scott (1944-2012) had passed away. On Sunday, August 19th, 2012 he jumped from a bridge and ended his life.  To quote Ron Howard on Twitter August 20th, 2012….”No more Tony Scott movies. Tragic day”. For many months now I have been thinking about doing a movie page on his older brother, RidleyHowever after checking out Tony’s career I was amazed to see that 15 of his 16 movies were already in my database and that I had seen every single one of his movies at least once. So I figured I would do a very quick tribute to one of the best action director over the last 30 years.

Tony Scott directed 16 movies from 1983 to 2010. His films were filled with lots of action and lots of movie stars. He worked 5 times with Denzel Washington, 2 times with Gene Hackman, 2 times with Tom Cruise, 2 times with Brad Pitt, and one time with the following actors….Bruce Willis, Will Smith, Robert Redford, Robert DeNiro, Dennis Hopper, Eddie Murphy, Kevin Costner and John Travolta….not a bad collection of actors in his 16 movies.  This page will rank those 16 Tony Scott movies from Best to Worst in seven different sortable columns of information.

  • Sort Tony Scott movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort Tony Scott movies by adjusted worldwide box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)

  1. I was wondering if he had been diagnosed with an illness he didn’t want to live with. So sad, he made some great movies.

    1. Hey Uninvited Writer….I think the brain tumor is the best guess right now….but it seems to make his actions much easier to understand….he left two notes and I am sure they will see the light of day soon. Thanks for the visit.

  2. Very sad indeed to hear about him this morning and now Phyllis Diller but he was a great filmmaker. I enjoyed watching Unstoppable very much and hope to see some of these other films soon. Great tribute Cogerson!

    1. Hey Alecia…thanks for the kind words…Unstoppable will go down as his last movie….a pretty good one to end a career.

  3. Good work Bruce I was shocked when I read the news this morning. Almost like a scene from one of his movies. Ridley must really be griefstricken the two brothers were very close.

Top Gun still no.1, the film that made Tom Cruise a star. Tony Scott was one of the best action directors in Hollywood.

I’ve seen all the films on your list and the only film I don’t own on DVD is The Hunger, it’s been ages since I last saw that film. I want to see it again. David Bowie plays a vampire.

I’m about to watch Crimson Tide as a tribute to Scott.

    1. Hey Steve…thanks for this suggestion on this hub. I am shocked as well. We own 9 of his 16 movies….we used to have Domino but I got rid of that one….it is justly ranked last of all his movies. The Hunger is a very strange but interesting movie..I do not Susan Sarandon has ever looked better in a film. Thanks for the comments.

  4. Wonderful tribute. I was so shocked and saddened when I learned of his passing. I loved so many of his films, always thought he was underrated, and am truly sorry for his loved ones loss. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace, Tony Scott.

    1. Hey Life as a Blog….I agree 100% with your comment about him being underrated…his brother’s shadow was huge but I think he did just fine on his own.

  5. So sad to hear about the loss of such a great filmmaker. I loved ‘Man on Fire’, and only saw ‘unstoppable’ about a month ago but thought it was very entertaining and enjoyable..

Its a sad day indeed 🙁
