Drivel Part: Years ago we got a request from Steve Lensman to do a Horror Movie UMR page. The last four or five Octobers we have thought we should do that Horror Movie page and every year before we knew it…Halloween would be over! Well today, WoC (Wife of Cogerson) was working on the database and pulling in information on 1000s of movies. When I saw that she was pulling in information on Thrillers….I casually mentioned…..”You should do that with Horror Movies…Steve has been asking for that page for years”. Well….three hours later….WoC had an UMR page with almost 400 Horror movies. So for the first time ever…..UMR has a page that was not completed by Cogerson….nope this baby belongs to WoC. So let me be the first to say it….GREAT JOB WoC!
Horror Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table
The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.
- Sort Horror Movies by the stars of the movies
- Sort Horror Movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses based on actual ticket sells (in millions)
- Sort Horror Movies by yearly domestic box office rank
- Sort Horror Movies by how they were received by critics and audiences. 60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie
- Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Horror Movie received.
- Sort Horror Movies movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score. UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.
*** During our update we lost our easy to find search box. Well WoC did some work and found a new way to search through this massive table. In the second row….first column…you will see “Movie (Year)”. You can type in a search word here and it will search the table.

2017 IT’s did $700 million in box office, making it one of the highest grossing horror movies of ALL TIME. Why isn’t that on here? or are you just going off there scores?
Hey Michael…It has the 16th spot…
I love most of the list but…I just can’t see how you rank Get Out number 5 of all time =/ It wasn’t a bad movie but I couldn’t put it in my top 20 fav horror movies.
Hey Steven our website (16 million views read in 230 countries…patting ourselves on the back) ranks movies statistically. Granted we set up the formula it ranks the movies….but we just plug in the movie’s stats…..and the results come out. In this case….Get Out has some of the greatest stats for a horror movie. It is not our personal preference….just a stat list….made to be argued with. Many people argue it is not even a horror movie….while many argue it is. Since we looked at 1000s of horror movies..in the end…we included many movies that do not fit the definition of many people’s “horror movies”. So…as a movie fan…I agree with you….it is a somewhat overrated movie…but as a stat fan…it is one of the greatest horror movies ever made.
What the hell is Get Out doing among such gold? sure it was an entertaining single view movie(maybe another viewing in a few years), but I don’t remember any other horror movie that had such a political/social agenda behind its success. as a hardcore horror fan and artist of over 40 years(and very liberal, at that), I found this movie just above average, very entertaining, had an original twist, yet very forgettable among great horror films. I am a rarity among horror fans, in that I do my best to stay as objective, when judging horror movies, as possible(even if I want to love one sooo bad, I try to keep personal feelings, nostalgia, etc. out of it).
Hey Shawn….good feedback. Our list is a statistical ranking…with box office, professional reviews, critic reviews and awards as the stats we measured. Get Out was one of the biggest box office hits of the year, is the 34th biggest horror hit of all-time (adjusted gross), almost has 100% Rotten Tomatoe score (98% of 330 professional critics), has a stellar 7.7 IMDb rating….which is just outside their Top 250 movies…and picked up 4 Oscar nominations including a Best Picture….and won one Oscar. Only a few movies can statistical beat those stats. Now one could argue that Get Out is not a horror movie….but the general consensus is that it is in the horror family of movies. Personally….I thought it was ok….saw it….but have no desire to watch it again. Thanks for the feedback..it is appreciated.
Cogerson, I thought Get Out was awful, with a disgusting underlying message. too offensive to repeat here. it had an interesting concept and 2 good performances: mother and brother. It had some humor. I hate that it may take years for reviews to become realistic about its quality.
I didn’t care for Get out at all. Unlikable characters, and very predictable.
Hey Tony….thanks for the mini-review of Get Out. I was underwhelmed myself…..maybe my expectations were too high. I do realize it has a serious following. Good feedback.
Psycho was way better than the 6th sense.
Hey Chris….this massive table has almost 500 movie ranked on it….it is sortable….so if your sort by critic and audience rating….you will see Psycho sitting in 2nd place….while The Sixth Sense in 51st place….so the reviews agree with you 100%….our formula also takes into account box office and awards….and that is where The Sixth Sense tops Psycho…as Sixth Sense was a bigger hit, got more Oscar nominations…and even got a Best Picture Oscar nomination. Both are great movies…thanks for the feedback.
