Over the years we have received many requests to do UMR pages on genres. Besides doing a Sports movie page we have pretty much ignored those requests. We ignored those requests because we could not figure out a way to put together a page on a whole genre. Recently we stumbled across a book called Musicals by Daniel Cohen. In that book Cohen looked at the best of the best musicals from the 1920s to the mid 1980s. At the end of the book was a filmography of all the movies in his book. That seemed like a great starting point for us to finally do a UMR page on musicals. Here are rules we used when putting together this page.
(1) If Cohen listed the movie in his book…the movie made the page. (2) Although we are not really huge musical movie fans….a few of the musicals we actually like….did not make his book. So we added our favorite musicals like Paint Your Wagon (Clint singing…. how did that not make the book?) and The Rocky Horror Picture show. (3) Then we included movie musicals made after Cohen’s book was published. (4) We did not include Biopics. Yes movies like The Buddy Holly Story, Coal Miner’s Daughter and La Bamba have lots of music but almost all of it occurs on a stage or in a studio. (5) We also did not include album movies like Purple Rain and Pink Floyd’s The Wall or most of the Disney animated classics….with the exception of Beauty and The Beast which was on every Best Musical Movie list we saw. (6) In the end we actually ended up with way more than 100 movies….279 to be precise. So since we researched them….we figured we would include them. (7) Can’t find a musical on the table? If it was before 1984….it is not our fault….you have to blame Daniel Cohen. If the movie is made after 1984….then we will take the blame. BUT….leave a comment detailing the missing movie…..and we will include it. Enjoy!

While I agree with a lot of your choices, there is no reason why White Christmas should be so low on the list, and below Golddiggers of 1933??????
Hey Laurel….the default setting for the massive table is Critic/Audience Rating….that comes from IMDb, RottenTomatoes, Leonard Maltin classic video book and other sources. If you sort by box office…White Christmas zooms to the Top 10. White Christmas is without a doubt one of the most famous musicals ever made. Thanks for checking out my page.
I have seen 189 movies on this list. You are going to get some arguments from TCM people about you including some biopics and not others. frankly, many look only on the list and not what you write about at the top of the page.
Perhaps you can put musical biopics on a separate page at some time in the future and call it Top Musical Biopics?

According to my database I have 195 musicals in my movie collection but looking at your list I count just 111 that I’ve seen. Which means I have 84 films that are not listed here, ooh what can they be? It’s a mystery! 🙂
I didn’t include Disney animation in my list and you’ve only included Beauty and the Beast, but I did include 28 Elvis musicals and you haven’t included any. That still leaves over 50 missing from your list.
Good to see West Side Story topping the UMR chart, one of my top favorites, but my no.1 favorite musical did not even make your top 20. Singin’ in the Rain, the greatest musical of all time is at 24, oh dear. This is where straightforward totting up the ratings would give a far more accurate reading of the great and not so great. That’s where your critics chart comes in handy, Singin in the Rain at no.1 but there are still anomalies – the fairly average Holiday Inn rated higher than West Side Story and the near legendary Wizard of Oz for instance, how is this so?
Looking at the box office charts The Sound of Music easily the most popular, surprised to see South Pacific up there too.
Other favorites of mine include The Band Wagon, On the Town, An American in Paris and Gigi.
Famous musicals I haven’t seen include Hello Dolly, Funny Girl, Fiddler on the Roof, The Music Man and All That Jazz.

Hey Steve….actually now the count is up to 224. Somehow I lost The Unsinkable Molly Brown in the transfer from the database to the web page…..plus I got some suggestions of missing musicals.
Tally count…Flora smokes us again….194 for her….111 for you (does not count the added movies)…and me at 81.
There are 100s of musical movies missing….most of the movies come from one book on musicals….I imagine the actual amount of musicals made is in the 1000s.
Glad you have no issues with the UMR Score on this page….I made sure that Singin’ In The Rain was the default number one movie….it drops to 17th on UMR score….mainly because the Oscar people failed to give it the proper credit it needed.
South Pacific was the 6th biggest box office hit of the entire 1950s….only 10 Commandments, Ben-Hur, Around The World In 80 Days and The Robe did better. (granted there are some Disney movies higher but they have many re-releases).
