This is the Top 100 Movies in our database. Several years back, we came up with an idea to create a mathematical equation that would create a numerical score for each movie. The first thing we had to come up with were factors for the equation. So we thought….if we were producing a movie what would we like to see our movie accomplish. The first thing we would want, would be for the movie to be successful at the box office. Secondly, we would like the critics and movie goers to enjoy our movie. And finally we would like our movie to receive award recognition through Golden Globe® and Oscar® ceremonies. So let’s look at the breakdown of the variables in the equation.
1. Box office results. We figure that box office is the most important factor, so it received the highest percentage (30%) of the equation. The ceiling was $200 million in adjusted box office dollars. Any movie that crossed $200 million maxed out the points in the category.
2. Critics and audience reception. We felt that critical reception was the second most important factor so it received the second highest percentage 45%) of the equation. So where do I find critics/audience reception? We use at least 6 different sources: RottenTomatoes, IMDB, Yahoo Movies, Roger Ebert, Leonard Maltin and Fandango. Put them all together and I get an average with 100% being the highest score possible.
3. Award Recognition. The final part of the equation is worth 25%. A movie gets points for Golden Globe® and Oscar® nominations and wins. The Golden Globes get 5% while the Oscars® get 13% of the equation. The last 7% goes to amount of Oscar® nominations and amount of Oscar® wins.
So far we have done Ultimate Movie Ranking Scores on 26,478 movies. Granted that is only a small percentage of films that were ever made but we have done all the big blockbusters and Oscar® winners. So the following table lists the current Top 100 movies that PERFORMED the best in ALL THREE CATEGORIES. In other words we are not saying these are the best movies just the ones that STATISTICALLY PERFORMED THE BEST.
Top 100 Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table
The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.
- Sort Top 100 Movies by co-stars of the movies
- Sort Top 100 Movies by director or directors of the movies
- Sort Top 100 Movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost
- Sort Top 100 Movies how they were received by critics and audiences. 60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie
- Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Top 100 movie received.
- Sort Top 100 Movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score. UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.
- Use the sort and search buttons to make this table very interactive. For example if you want to see the 4 Marlon Brando movies to make the list…just type in Brando in the search box and up they pop.

Our Top 100 Movie Snubs?
To make our Top 100 Movies list….a movie had to do well in three categories…box office glory, critical acclaim and award recognition. Let’s look at some movies that did do well in all three categories.1941’s Citizen Kane is considered one of the greatest films of all time. Citizen Kane got great reviews and picked up some major Oscar® nominations but was a flop at the box office. It’s poor showing at the box office puts Citizen Kane as the 898th best movie in our database.
1958’s Vertigo has great reviews….did below average for a Hitchcock movie at the box office and only picked up 2 minor Oscar® nominations…winning none…..that puts Vertigo in 877th place in our database. That is better than 20,000 movies in our database which is pretty good….just not good enough to crack the Top 250. If you want to see a movie page that gives these movies some love…check out our Top 100 Best Reviewed Movies.
Just making a boat load of money at the box office does not give you a spot in the Top 100. Let’s look at the biggest worldwide hit of 2014. Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014) made almost a quarter of a billion in North America and crossed the billion dollar mark in worldwide gross. Yet critics destroyed the movie and nobody older than 12 liked the movie. It’s critical rating is so low that it keeps Transformers: Age of Extinction from even cracking the Top 1000.
And finally let’s quickly look at the other end of our database. 26,478 movies ranked….some movie has to be at the bottom of the rankings. For awhile Nicolas Cage and his Deadfall (1993) movie held that honor. Well 2014 gave us a new worst ranked movie. Coming in with less 3 million in box office gross, some of the worst reviews of all time and the winner of the 2014 Razzie® Award as worst movie of the year….Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas. With a UMR Score of 5.56 Kirk’s movie is ranked as the 26,478th movie in my database.
For comments….all you need is a name and a comment….please ignore the rest.

MODERN MALE STARS FOR POTENTIAL”FUTURE” LEGENDS STATUS
The dust hasn’t settled on most of these yet so it’s futile at this stage to try to rank them along with those above but here in alphabetical order are the 8 most commonly mentioned when journalist try to marry past and present greats in ranking lists:
Connery/Cruise/Eastwood/Ford/Hanks/Newman/Nicholson/Redford.
DeNiro, Nicholson and Hanks are usually mentioned in the top 5 of best ACTORS lists along with Brando and Chaplin and sometimes Pacino
I like your list Bob….though it is actually 17….but I can forgive you for that. Good to see Tyrone Power sneak in there….a forgotten star. And putting Brando at 8th….surprised to see him listed that low by you. Thanks for sharing your list.
1 Thanks for the kind comments. Brando, Monroe, Chaplin and Sinatra were all in Time magazine’s list of 100 greatest people of 20th Century but as I understood it that list was trying to reflect changes that individuals had been PERCEIVED to have brought about in that century with Bud being CREDITED with changing the course of acting that Nicholson keeps banging on about. Rosa Parks for example was one of the 100 because of her campaign against racial segregation on busses and clearly ‘box office’ didn’t come into the equation there.
2 However in my opinion whilst box office is not of course the only criterion that makes a legend the AFI did not give enough weight to it. I wonder for example how many people would agree with Duke being outside AFIs Top 10? Brando’s box office was great in the 50s and for a while in the 70s but overall he did not (nor did for example Monroe) make enough films that would have generated the grosses that would place him alongside the Duke and the King as a box office legend. I will concede though. that once you get beyond the Top 5 you could probably toss a coin or draw lots.
3 Anyway we all have our own way of looking at things and I have always acknowledged that without your stats and comments I wouldn’t even attempt to question AFI – general common sense apart of course.- so again I am indebted to you.
Hey Bob
1. Your welcome….Time is a good source for sure.
2. I agree….with all of these legends it is very hard to separate them.
3. Glad my stats have given up you ammunition to question the AFI list.
Good comments as always.
BRUCE
1 Even in the 1950s too lists of all time and contemporary “Greats” used to appear and one journalist commented that in the Hollywood of that era “You normally had to be on SOMEBODY’s list to continue to be recognised as a valuable star.”.
2 It was in fact said that ‘Sandra Bullock’ type agents paid for bogus lists ‘Greats’ to be published that would show their man/woman in say 5th position so as not to be too obvious.
3 Possibly that still goes on today and maybe Liz Hurley’s agents took advantage of such a market and if so it’s good news for you as you could pay for a rash of Willis lists with Bruce wedged between say Chaplin and the Duke.
PS: I can now again sleep at night because your new lengthy recent comments page
is working wonders and it is so easy to follow all of the exchanges that have happened overnight. Please pass on my compliments to W o C. Many thanks BOB
Bob
I promised not to comment on your list and within minutes I am going to break my promise.
I find nothing wrong with your list at all. Seems reasonable. The one thing which really struck me as a positive is that Heston and Power made your list. They were given the shaft by both the Quigley polls and the AFI. So, Bravo.
JOHN
1 Thanks for the feedback. Actually whilst I believe all deserve their places in the list the only 3 that I would have drawn my sword and defended to the death were the Duke the Little Tramp and the King.
2 Can I ask you to amend your last sentence to read “They were given the shaft by Quigley, AFI and the Cogerson Top 100 Greatest Stars.”
Actually though I don’t agree with Power’s exclusion from AFI I can understand it as his career was cut short and he was probably in few films regarded as very top. However I have never been able to get my head round how much Heston was under-appreciated as he was such a commanding figure in a 62 year screen career that included some of the greatest classics and all time box office hits. Bruce’s idol Roger Ebert wrote of him “He made at least three movies that almost everybody sees – Ben Hur, 10 Commandments and Planet of the Apes.” Time magazine opined that some of his movies could not PROPERLY be remade today because he is no longer around.
3 You find my list reasonable !
Do I dream?
Or do I doubt?
Do mine eyes deceive me?
Are things what they seem?
Or are visions about?
Bob
I can’t edit, but thanks for pointing out that Heston and Power and not on Cogerson’s top 100 list. It is for him to defend that, as it is a head scratcher for me. I assume he just hadn’t done the research yet.
As for Heston and Power, bad as the AFI slight was, TCM published a book of the 50 greatest male legends of the classic era. Neither Power nor Heston even made this top fifty list. For Power, some critics said it was because he was a Fox star and TCM does not control the Fox film library. Heston? Who knows? He was politically controversial, first for supporting civil rights for African-Americans, and later for supporting the NRA. I don’t think politics should enter into it, though. But Heston was obviously shafted by the Quigley polls even back in the day. Like I said, a head scratcher.
Hey John…when I made my Top 100….I used all 50 AFI Legend….I really thought the AFI actress list was pretty weak….so when I did “my Modern 50″….I tweaked their list….and moved some of their legends to my modern list….and added in some actresses I thought they screwed up on.
When I did the actors…I did not tweak their list…as I thought it was actually pretty good….and since they did not pick Heston or Power they did not make my list. But if had tweaked their list like I did the actress list…Heston would have made my list. Power would have been in the running too.
That’s my excuse….and I am sticking to it….lol.
Hey John good to see comment on Bob’s list…..though I am disappointed there were no fireworks….lol.
How the West Was Won fell off the original list. It had 18 people in 2000 and now has 2.
Hey Dan…..thanks….How The West Was Won is the movie with the most UMR subjects in it….I think it is 10….Ford, Fonda, Stewart, Reynolds, Wayne, Widmark, Ritter, Brennan, Peck and Tracy. At one point A Bridge Too Far was my leader….but recently UMR pages have moved that movie to second….and for some reason I can not get motivated to do a Liv Ullman page….lol.
When I fill in all the info on these Oracle of Bacon lists of course my curiosity is peaked as to what film the most actors connect in. I still have about 15 actors to input in the 2016 list (and we have lousy internet service) but these are all the films from the 2000 list that had 10 or more actors from that top 1000 list. I can tell you that there are no pictures from before 1970 now that have 10 but back then yes.

Hey Dan…..very cool list….not surprised the Player has the top spot…..seems most of the movies were ensemble casts….with some exceptions of course….surprised to see Red Heat on the list. Heaven’s Gate in a favorable light….not thinking that happens too often. So Wyatt Earp made the list but not Tombstone….then again I have only watched Wyatt Earp once….and Tombstone many many times…so it seems Tombstone has a cast of 1000s…lol. As always thanks for sharing.
Remember the above list which showed all the films that connected 10 or more people from the first Oracle of Bacon top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list from 2000. This is now the top connected films based on the current list (10 or more people). The Player is still #1 but is down 3 people (it actually was higher in years in-between). I have also listed the highest ranked person from the list for each film. Pardon the layout pulled from my spreadsheet which formats differently. Also in the beginning you could copy and paste all the credits from the IMDB but they reformatted later. When it’s all caps I typed myself.

Hey Dan
1. Sorry your internet service is hindering the things you want to see and find….I can easily see how frustrating that can be.
2. Thanks for a very fascinating list.
3. Almost every single movie on the list is very well known to me.
4. Some of my all time favorites….made the list….which I guess is not surprising since I really like movies that have lots of stars…A Bridge Too Far, How The West Was One.
5. For some reason Young Doctors In Love caught me eye…..trying to figure out which actors helped it make the list….got McKean, Young and Hector E. as strong possibles…but the rest no idea…..was Bess and Arthur in that movie….lol.
6. Thanks for sharing this information.
Going My Way and Slumdog Millionaire wouldn’t get anywhere near my list.
Hey Bill C. I agree they would not be on my list of personal top movies. But statistically these two movies were very successful. Especially Going My Way….that was the 9th biggest box office hit of the entire 1940s decade. 10 Oscar nominations…a Best Picture Oscar…Crosby’s Father O’Malley movies were like the Stars Wars of the 1940s. That being said….the movie is very very dated. As for Slumdog…..a pretty overrated movie….but it was winner in all three categories used in this equation. Thanks for stopping by.
The last time I commented on this it was a top 250 and I had seen 230 of them, now it’s a top 100 and I’ve seen 92 of them. Movies I’ve missed include Fiddler on the Roof, Kramer vs Kramer, Ordinary People and The Best Years of Our Lives.
It’s good to see my favorite film – Ben-Hur still in the top 10 on the UMR chart… psst [whispers] If I were you I’d give Fiddler on the Roof the boot and add Vertigo to the list. You can do it at night when no one is looking. I mean the only Hitchcock you have on there is Rebecca, no Rear Window, Psycho or North by Northwest! [gasps]
Yep I drop 150 movies from the page. Pretty much from pure laziness. The report that generates the Top 250 requires lots of work on my part….versus the other pages that just require me to copy and paste….by the time I got to the 70s….I decided to only go to the Top 100. Hitch….has 6 movies in the Top 250….so many of his movies just missed the Top 100. My tally is 100. The Martian has a nice spot in 77th place….I thought The Revenant was going to make the list…but it’s Best Picture upset kept it off the page….if The Revenant would have won…it would be in 80th place.
Ben-Hur actually lost a couple of spots with the new equation….but it still held on…I think 4 movies fell out of the Top 10. On The Waterfront has the biggest jump up…but thankfully….not enough of a jump to knock off Ben. “If I Were a Rich Man” I might do that late night spy work and bump Fiddler…but wow Vertigo is so far off from the Top 100…..lol. “yubby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dum”. Thanks for the updated comment.
