Want to know the best Sports Movies?  How about the worst Sports Movies?  Curious about Sports Movies did at the box office or which Sports Movies picked up the most Oscar® nominations and Oscar® wins? Need to know which  Sports Movies movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

A few years ago, I got a request from HubPages’s Stevennix2001 to figure out the Top 100 Sports Movies according to our Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score formula.  Well I had to research over 1,200 sports movies….but I was able to come up with a Top 100.  Along the way I actually wrote 14 sports movie pages.  Many of those pages look at each individual sport….for example Ranking Baseball Movies.   The final  page I did was this one….which lists over 400 movies that received a Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  To be eligible a movie had to play in movie theaters in North America.

Since 1976 it is almost impossible to think about boxing and not think of one of the Rocky movies.

Sports Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort Movies by the type of sport
  • Sort Movies by the star of the movie
  • Sort Movies by adjusted box office grosses using current movie ticket cost
  • Sort by how Movies were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Sports Movies received.
  • Sort Sports Movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.
  • This table is freaking huge.  You need to use the sort and search buttons to find information.  For example if you want to see Kevin Costner sports movies…type his name in the search box and his 7 sports movies will pop up.  You can do the same thing with sports….if you want to see cricket movies….type in cricket in the search box and the two cricket movies will pop up. Sylvester Stallone leads the way with 11 movies in the table.

  1. Great sports movie page, I really enjoyed watching how this list came about. I would agree that Rocky is the number one movie. I have no issues with Hoosiers being number 62, but I can not believe Rudy fell out of the Top 100, have you not seen the movie? What a great story and as an added bonus you get to see one of Vince Vaughn’s first movies. Great job Cogerson.

    1. Thank you YankeesRule….I think Hoosiers and Rudy are in the same boat….great films now…but when released at the theaters they were pretty much ignored. I was going to mention Vaughn in Rudy….so I am glad you brought that up…thanks for checking out my sports movie pages.

  2. Wow wow wow, Cogerson you have done some fine movie pages in the past, but reading and understanding the structure of this page is amazing. I think I will vote this page as one of the best on that writing competition. I like the Top 10, although I have to admit I have only seen 4 of those movies. My favorite made the Top Ten I am so happy, bring it on Sandra and The Blind Side. Simply AWESOME.

    1. Thank you very much KellyE1967 for the compliment and the vote on the hub contest. I am glad you are happy with the ranking of The Blind Side. Thanks for stopping by and the comments.

  3. very impressive work, I like the fact that you seem to have many years covered, City for Conquest is one of my favorite films. Good choice for number 1.

    1. Hey Thomas thanks for checking out my page, glad to see one of your favorite movies made the list. I have to admit I have not seen City for Conquest, but it was made during Cagney’s prime, I will have to check it out.

  4. I am mightly impressed on the amount effort you have put into this sports page. Whatever you are earning I give you a 10% raise across the board. Awesome information packed into one hub. I agree Rocky is #1 not so sure about Heaven Can Wait being so high, but then again I only have vague memories of the movie. Also I have to agree about the elephant in the room , Hoosiers is way too low, although I understand your logic

    1. Thanks for the raise hinton1966….with 6 kids I can use it…lol. Heaven Can Wait has awesome numbers across the board…after just watching it….I can tell you football is one of the major themes in the movie. As for Hoosiers, if my movie score formula did not include box office…then Hoosiers would be near the top….sorry but I think box office results is one of the best indicators of how successful a movie was during its initial release….thanks for stopping by and reading the page it is greatly appreciated

  5. Heaven Can Wait…a movie I watched a 100 times on VHS.

Any Given Sunday is a movie that I need to see.I’ve heard such great reviews for it.;)

Your methodology is unique and wonderful Cogerson.;)

    Your truly Talented.;)

    1. I appreciate the very nice compliment mentalist acer. My ranking system made it very easy to rank these movies from #1 to #371. All I did was plug in the information and program calculated the scores. I just rewatched Heaven Can Wait this weekend….and wife could not believe it got so many Oscar nominations…heck Warren Beatty got 4 nominations himself….for acting, writing, producing and directing. Any Given Sunday is one of Stones better movies….good movie except for the ending
