Want to know the best Sports Movies?  How about the worst Sports Movies?  Curious about Sports Movies did at the box office or which Sports Movies picked up the most Oscar® nominations and Oscar® wins? Need to know which  Sports Movies movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

A few years ago, I got a request from HubPages’s Stevennix2001 to figure out the Top 100 Sports Movies according to our Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score formula.  Well I had to research over 1,200 sports movies….but I was able to come up with a Top 100.  Along the way I actually wrote 14 sports movie pages.  Many of those pages look at each individual sport….for example Ranking Baseball Movies.   The final  page I did was this one….which lists over 400 movies that received a Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  To be eligible a movie had to play in movie theaters in North America.

Since 1976 it is almost impossible to think about boxing and not think of one of the Rocky movies.

Sports Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort Movies by the type of sport
  • Sort Movies by the star of the movie
  • Sort Movies by adjusted box office grosses using current movie ticket cost
  • Sort by how Movies were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Sports Movies received.
  • Sort Sports Movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.
  • This table is freaking huge.  You need to use the sort and search buttons to find information.  For example if you want to see Kevin Costner sports movies…type his name in the search box and his 7 sports movies will pop up.  You can do the same thing with sports….if you want to see cricket movies….type in cricket in the search box and the two cricket movies will pop up. Sylvester Stallone leads the way with 11 movies in the table.

  1. Cogerson’s list is actually of Sports movies, not just all best movies ever made. Not everyone will agree with all the choices (even though Cogerson actually used a formula to determine it instead of purely subjective notions).

I personally really liked that Cogerson had the interest, originality and put in the laborious research that he did to create his ranking method for the hub, and am still planning to use this page as a reference tool for a gift list for sports movie fans. That’s what I think; obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Cogerson, you may want to consider an Amazon capsule for a few of the movies, especially ones you think people might not already own or have seen, but which still rank highly.

    1. I greatly appreciate the backup Giselle Maine….I think a formula is the way to go…take the subjective out of the equation….I knew when movies like Hoosiers and Rudy fell so far down the list, people would complain….so if it took almost 600 hits and 40 comments…to finally get a negative comment…I think I can be happy with all the positive feedback.

    1. Thanks for stopping by Sportsnuts…..box office results account for 35% of the score….that sometimes makes a movie’s score go down….if the movie was discovered on DVD/VHS especially movies like Rudy and Hoosiers

  2. There are tons of movies on this list that I am not aware off, but I really like how you built these pages and concluded it with this one, they were fun and educational to read. Great job, Cogerson.

    1. I appreciate the very nice compliment….I think in the end….if you were to watch the movies with the highest critic/audience score you would find some awesome movies….thanks for stopping by.

  3. Great list, I enjoyed reading it very much, I thought I was a hue sports fan, but I must admit there are about 20 movies on this list that I have never knew existed. Not sure where Ed fits into this article, at first I thought this was going to be a joke article, just a little confusing but great information.

    1. Thanks for checking out the page Hoosiers…the fact that so many different(lesser known) movies made the list, makes it a better list…as for Ed…pretty much I was looking for a different picture to post…and Ed seemed like a good idea at the time….but on hub pages…Ed is listed as the photo that goes with the Top 100 Sports Movies….which could make people decided just on those two factors..the hub is not worth checking…thanks for that input….and I will change it.

  4. Fantastic! Thanks for making this list clear and as unbiased as possible with your mathematical formula. This is a very helpful resource for anyone, especially for women with a husband or significant other.

I never know what to get my husband for his birthday, so I’ll try getting him a DVD of one of the top 10 (that he doesn’t already own) on your list. I think it will go over pretty well.

    1. Thanks for stopping by Giselle Maine….I greatly appreciate your comments and compliments….I never thought of this list as a Christmas list helper….that sounds like a great idea though…thanks for suggesting
