Want to know the best Sports Movies?  How about the worst Sports Movies?  Curious about Sports Movies did at the box office or which Sports Movies picked up the most Oscar® nominations and Oscar® wins? Need to know which  Sports Movies movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

A few years ago, I got a request from HubPages’s Stevennix2001 to figure out the Top 100 Sports Movies according to our Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score formula.  Well I had to research over 1,200 sports movies….but I was able to come up with a Top 100.  Along the way I actually wrote 14 sports movie pages.  Many of those pages look at each individual sport….for example Ranking Baseball Movies.   The final  page I did was this one….which lists over 400 movies that received a Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  To be eligible a movie had to play in movie theaters in North America.

Since 1976 it is almost impossible to think about boxing and not think of one of the Rocky movies.

Sports Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort Movies by the type of sport
  • Sort Movies by the star of the movie
  • Sort Movies by adjusted box office grosses using current movie ticket cost
  • Sort by how Movies were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Sports Movies received.
  • Sort Sports Movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.
  • This table is freaking huge.  You need to use the sort and search buttons to find information.  For example if you want to see Kevin Costner sports movies…type his name in the search box and his 7 sports movies will pop up.  You can do the same thing with sports….if you want to see cricket movies….type in cricket in the search box and the two cricket movies will pop up. Sylvester Stallone leads the way with 11 movies in the table.

  1. Wow! How do you manage to bring up that many data? I have only seen few of them and my favorite is Denzel Washington’s Remember the Titans. I don’t really agree with you on your no.1’s choice “Rocky”. I never liked any of rocky movie series despite being a huge Sylvester fan. My choice would have been the “Miracle”. I would also like to point out that one of my other favorite “The Greatest Game Ever Played” didn’t make your list. I thought that was fantastic movie. All in all great list and great job once again.

    1. Hey AnkushiKohli…..thanks for stopping by….I am glad you enjoyed by Top 400 sports movie list ….the rankings were based on statistics only….but Rocky was a huge hit(one of the biggest ever), critics and audiences loved it and it won the Oscar for Best Picture….put all those together and you have a number one movie.

As for The Greatest Game Ever Played it came in at #217…..it is also ranked in my golf page as the 8th best golf movie….but not ranked high enough to make this list….but I agree with you…it is a great movie. This table is so big you gotta use the search and sort buttons.

  2. certainly agree with rocky. list isn’t bad a lot of movies on here that shouldn’t be ranked where they are though

    1. Hey jbn thanks for checking out my sports page, granted some of the really famous sports movies are ranked lower than one would expect, but normally their box office totals were really pretty low and that was a huge part of the rankings.

  3. Help! Cogerson or anyone else… how can I subtly find out if my husband might like “Remember the Titans” without straight out asking him? I am thinking of getting him this for a Christmas gift. Any ideas/suggestsions on how to find out? Or should I just go ahead and take a chance? He likes football and he really liked The Blind Side. (I haven’t seen “Remember the Titans” myself but I have seen The Blind Side.) Any feedback?

    1. Hey Giselle Maine…I think buying it is a safe bet….not sure I have ever heard of anybody saying they did not like Remember the Titans. Another thought would be to show him the page on the top football movies and judge his reaction…whenever I see a hub I think my wife will like I forward her an e-mail with the link of the page (she does not seem to suffer from the movie page addiction that I suffer from….lol). Anyway on that page the Top 5 Football movies are Jerry Maguire, Heaven Can Wait, The Longest Yard(1974), The Blindside and Remember the Titans.

      1. Thanks so much for your prompt advice Cogerson. I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out! And I didn’t previously know about your hub on Football Movies so the link was very helpful.

    1. The King of Kong is a great movie, one that I have seen many times. As a documentary, it did not qualify in my list….the same as Murderball…another great documentary….that makes many Top Sports movie lists…thanks for checking out my sports movie page.
