I saw 30 of top 36. total 57. 10s and favorites: twister, ID4, birdcage,time to kill, courage under fire, Michael, the rock, phenomenon, jerry Maguire. 10 not favorite: English patient. 9 and favorite: scream. 9s not favorites: one fine day, tin cup, mission impossible, hunchback.
I understand cogerson’s down rating this year. the reviews were all over the place. crazy year with top reviews all weird to quirky. top 9 reviews with only 150 mil adj. dom. b.o . total. sling blade, fargo, larry flint, secrets and lies, trainspotting, lone star, la promesse, shine, hamlet.
hidden gems: sling blade(too weird to ever recommend), mirror has two faces(dark), Jack(robin Williams), fly away home (children friendly), fargo(too weird to ever recommend), city hall(john cusack oh and little al pacino) , spitfire grill, marvin’s room (twisted).
I never saw star trek first contact . I figure I like what I like and so can you.
Hey bob cox….thanks for checking out this massive 1997 page. 30 of the Top 36 means you saw almost all of the best movies of that year. I enjoyed Twister, ID#4 and The Rock in theaters….really fun movies to see on the big screen. I watched Jerry Maguire and A Time To Kill on VHS…both really good movies. Of your 9s…..I have never seen Trainspotting….I saw the second one….but never the cult classic…maybe one day. Good hidden gems….though Jack is one of the few Robin Williams movies that I have not seen. Loved Fargo…..I think it can be recommend…and it has an Oscar winning performance to boot. I agree with you 100%…”I like what I like and so can you.”…good feedback.
I think my best film of 1996 was The People Vs. Larry Flynt. Seems like I did not see that many in cinemas in 1996. I saw a book in Barnes & Nobles about 1999 being the best year in movies, what do you think of that?
Hey Dan. Thanks as always for sharing your lists. I also enjoyed the People vs Larry Flynt. An entertaining movie with great performances by Edward Norton and Woody Harrelson. It stll looks like you saw a lot more movies in theaters than I did in 1996. Your overall tally easily beats everybody here. So congrats for that. As for 1999 being the best year for movies….I will wait until we get to that yearly review before I can answer it. But right now, I can not see that being the best year. Good stuff as always.
