  • Sort 2007 Movies by wordwide box office grosses

  1. I saw 61 including 19 of top 20. 10s and favorites: live free or die hard, oceans 13, the bucket list, bourne ultimatum. no 10s not favorites. 9 and favorite stardust. 9s not favorites:freedom writers, great debaters, august rush, gone baby gone, juno, Sweeney todd, I am legend, spiderman 3, the kingdom .hidden gems: ps I love you, Michael clayton, dan in real life, king of California, walk hard, reign over me, grace is gone( quote from letterboxd reviewer”the first time I ever wanted john cusack to be my dad”, the shooter(I hate Wahlberg “I still have the shovel”) flawless, lars and the real girl(8s) .
wow , almost 100 movies with a 70 or above review. a ton of quirky worth watching movies .

    1. Hey bob cox…..glad you got some time to check out the latest UMR pages. Hope things are calming down at your new job. 61 is a stout total. Looking at your 10s and 9s…I agree with you on Live Free or Die Hard (though the airplane finale is so over the top), The Bucket List (Jack and Morgan make a good team) and Stardust (an underrated movie that is in the same class as The Princess Bride). Hidden gems: I bought P.S. I Love You for WoC and she hated it….and still gives me a hard time for buying that as a present for her. Cusack is good in Grace Is Gone…too bad that movie never got a big release…though Cusack did get a Golden Globe nomination for that movie. I agree 100%…lots of quality movies. Good feedback.

  2. “I am tired of tears and Master,
    And men that laugh and weep;
    Of what may come hereafter
For men that sow to reap:
I am weary of days and hours,
    Blown buds of barren flowers,
    Desires and dreams and powers
    And everything but sleep.”

    HOWEVER

    “—even the weariest river
    Winds somewhere safe to sea.”
[all from Algernon Charles Swinburne’s The Garden of the Proserpine]

And so with 2007, we reach the end of your mammoth self-imposed task on behalf of all of us to provide comprehensive annual reviews for every year of the talkies and a few years of the silent era, with decade reviews thrown in for good measure.

You already know how much I appreciate all your marvellous efforts and I am sure many others do as well, and all that remains is for me to conduct my own final ‘review’ with a grateful “Vote Up!”. I have seen just 6 of the Top 30 highest grossing domestic grossing films in your charts and your overall review average for the 10 movies that I have most enjoyed from 2007 is 70.6%. See Part 2.

    1. BOB’s 10 MOST FAVE 2007 MOVIES

[My respect for your great work on this series and its companion piece covering individual Decades dictated a 2-parter from me in our ‘finale’ on the project. ]

American Gangster – Ironically Denzel -and not Russell! – had the title role.
      Atonement
      Fracture
No Country for Old Men – Scott, McCrea and Astaire all reside there!
Michael Clayton-good to see an 85% Cogerson rating for Rosemary’s nephew
I am Legend-a good remake of Chuck Heston’s 1971 The Omega Man
      The Brave One
Perfect Stranger- even in decline Mr Gimme More is a worth ticket price to me.
      Vacancy
The Bucket List-Morg and Jack! – a great teaming sadly met with a 54% WH rating. IMDB is much kinder with a 74%,rating, roughly my own approximate personal assessment.

Regarding my own targets, all that remains now is for me to respond to anything interesting that you and Mr Posters cook up between today and Sunday and then I will be able to say as George W Bush did after the fall of Iraq “Mission accomplished!”

LOOSELY RELATED TRIVIA Marlon Brando died on 1 July 2004 aged 80 and later that day or early the next George W publicly paid tribute to the screen work of The Great Mumbler. Brando’s professional nemesis Joel Hirschhorn died just over a year later on Sept 17 2005 genuinely-sadly aged just 67. I wonder if in that intervening year Joel would have been able to recall where he was if and when he heard his President publicly extolling the virtues of Joel’s own Great Punchbag?

      1. On a further in-depth analysis of this ‘final’ [for now] annual review I have discovered something that is greatly coincidental -one presumes!-and ironic at the same time: that on the main table above the contents of entry no 303 should immediately follow those of entry 302.

By the way, did you know that alive at the moment and living in Boston is a Joel Naom Hirschhorn Ph.D.,M.D.who is a geneticist in the field of human genetics?

        1. Hey Bob…I think a later update took care of the “302” problem….coming in at number 302 was one of my most disappointing Michael Caine movies…his remake of Sleuth….which was horrible…it is so bad….that I have refused to listen to a DVD commentary that features Sir Michael. Very cool that a Joel Hirschhorn is still alive and well…a guess a google search on the Great Joel lead you to him. Good information.

          1. You remind me here of the title [or possibly posters tagline] “Dracula is alive and well and living in London.”!

      2. Hey Bob…I have seen all of your favorites….and with the exception of Bruce’s Perfect Stranger…I liked them all. Atonement has a few incredible massive scenes that stick in my memory, American Gangster has a great Denzel role, I Am Legend was in some ways Will Smith’s last solo hurrah…..I know Aladdin and Suicide Squad made a ton of money…but it was the movie’s pull versus Smith’s pull that made them hits.

As for Perfect Stranger….Bruce’s character is pretty much non-existent for the last 40% of the movie….she frames him….and then….his character is forgotten….him defending himself seemed like the way the movie was going….then….Bruce never showed up again.

Good trivia on Brando, Bush and Joel. I am sure when Brando passed…Joel had nothing but good things to say about the movie legend….remember….unless the duct tape covers it up…that Brando is on Joel’s book…two times!

Ah….now this has to be the last comment (can’t see doing anymore return comments until Monday morning) I type before your Paris trip…have fun….enjoy France! See you in a couple of weeks. Good stuff as always.

        1. HEY Bruce – is this US? Normally I would express reservations about some of your heroes/heroines/’chosen ones’ [a la Myrna/Hirsch] and you would dogmatically defend them. On the other hand though as somebody once said: “There’s nothing new under the sun.”

For a long time now I have been arguing that Mr Gimme More has fallen between the cracks of your star-ranking criteria and that Mr More was such massive box office in his heyday and brought so much entertainment to millions that he deserves to be in your Top 25 Male Legends 1950-2010.

In my opinion he has been a much greater star than Peter O’Toole, my Morg [sadly] and others who ARE in that Top 25. Giving Brucie an ‘honorable mention’ among those rejects who received serious consideration doesn’t really cut it for me – and I am positive that The Silent Majority agrees with me!

I too could have done with seeing More of Demi’s ex [no pun intended!] in Perfect Stranger just as I would have liked more of Mr Mumbles in Superman 1978 and Apocalypse Now. However both stars appeal to me so much that I am happy to watch them on screen even if it is only for a short while.

I would have drawn the line though at going to see Split for just a glimpse of the former 2nd head of the More-Willis household and I think that there you were the victim of what was virtually a subliminal cut.

According to sources, when making Superman 1978 Brando argued that Superman’s father would not have looked like us but would have had the form of one of Steve’s beloved aliens. Accordingly Marlon wanted some such creature to appear on screen with just The Great Mumbler’s voice emanating from it, but the Salkinds told him that as they were paying him a small fortune for a cameo he was at least going to SHOW UP for a few moments! Certainly I would have drawn the line at going to see a film for just Marlon’s voice – and I am sure so would Steve!! [I wonder what Brucie was paid for Split and did he think it was enough, or did he insist “Gimme more!”]

          1. Hey Bob… I wish Bruce had the stats to be among the Top 25….even with my tainted view of his career…..he has the box office glory to be in the Top 25…..he falters with reviews and award recognition. Not doing well in two of the three categories does not bode well. O’Toole..has the Oscar love (one of the most nominated thespians of all-time), the critical love of his movies….yet falters on box office….so he has 2 of the three categories covered….the one weakness in his armour is why he is so low in the Top 25. Good stuff on Marlon and Superman. Good stuff period.

    2. Hey Bob…good stuff from Swinburne (though I admit I have never heard of this person). Your knowledge in so many other fields truly impresses me. Thanks again for the kind words on putting these yearly reviews together. 6 is a little on the low side….but you are forgiven…lol.

  3. Hey Dan….thanks for finding and commenting on our 2006 movie ranking page. Dumping 7 pages on one day was probably not the best way to do this.

Ghostrider was a fun movie…much more fun than the sequel….I really enjoyed Peter Fonda in the original.

Only 93 movies seen in theaters? You are missing 2 movies….lol.

I saw 13 of these in movies….and have a grand total of seen 103 in total….so at least my grand total beat your theater total….small victories….lol.

    Thanks for sharing this information.
