Who were the Top Movie Stars of the 1930s statistically? This page will attempt to answer that question. Our main source of information was our Ultimate Movie Ranking (UMR) pages that covered movie stars that made movies in the 1930s. So far we have box office grosses on 1,297 movies made between 1930 and 1939. Granted this is far from all the movies made during that time frame….but it does cover most of the major movie releases in that decade.
We have included four lists of information. List one looks at the Top 15 stars by adjusted domestic box office. List two looks at the Top 15 stars by highest average rating per movie according to critics and audiences. List three looks at the Top 15 Stars by highest average UMR score per movie. List four shows our entire table of all the stars we looked at while complying these lists.

Poor Gary Cooper, he spent many years at Paramount so we have very little when it comes to his worldwide grosses.

Gable as the male star and top star. Myrna Loy and definitely Joan Crawford and possibly Garbo as top female. Garbo didn’t have huge box office though. It is amazing how low Katharine Hepburn and Bette Davis were on many of the lists. They increased in popularity over the next few decades.
Hey Mike thanks for the visit and the comment. I agree 100% with you about Gable….he is without a doubt the main star of the 1930s. I think star wattage….Garbo is the winner when looking at actresses….but statistically it is Myrna Loy. Davis really took off during the 1940s….while Hepburn was steady for the next 40 years. Good feedback.
Hey John….those long lists were cut and paste….I just had to tell the database what I wanted and out spit these stats.
Cogerson
After studying the stats a bit, I stick with Gable as the male star of the decade and the overall star of the decade, and by a wide margin.
Of the actresses, though, I now go with Ginger Rogers off your stats and thinking about it. She was in the pre-codes, the Busby Berkeley extravaganzas, the Fred and Ginger movies, and turned to comedy & some drama later in the decade. Lots of tough competition, but Ginger gets my vote.
Hey John…..I think you will find few people to argue you against Gable….an interesting choice on Ginger Rogers….she is well represented in all categories….I think the only negative is lack of individual Oscar love…..too bad Kitty Foyle was not made in the 1930s. I think you made a wise comment on your first guess comment….paraphrasing…..too close to call….with nobody separating themselves on the actress side….good feedback.
Hi
I studied the picture of the girl behind Clark Gable. I think it is either Loretta Young or Hely Lamarr, who hit the big time with Algiers in 1938. There’s no doubt about it that Gable was number 1 male star of the 30’s, nobody comes close.
If I was picking an actress I would probably go for Garbo or Shirley Temple. Interesting that as you go down the list, a lot weren’t even big stars in the 30’s. Betty Grable for example, didn’t really make it big until the 40’s. Bogart was really a supporting player. Lionel Barrymore, from the 30’s on was a supporting star. Nevertheless, the 30’s were definitely Hollywood’s golden era.
When I see clips from old 30’s movies, they just look so nostalgic. Of course there was a lot of dross churned out too but by 1939, Hollywood had reached a peak that it never really surpassed.
It’s a pity Laurel and hardy aren’t on the list but they were so magical. Glad the Marx Brothers get a mention. Surprisingly many of the best 30’s movies still stand out really well. A great page, thanks.
Hey Chris
1. Your guess of Hedy Lamarr might be the best one yet.
2. I agree with you about Gable being the biggest star of the decade.
3. Barrymore did win a Best Actor Oscar in the 1930s….and he was an above the title star for the entire decade.
4. The glory of 1939……so many great movies that year.
5. The lack of Laurel and Hardy in my database is one of our biggest weaknesses….but it is not from the lack of trying…..probably my least successful search in our 6 year history of doing these pages.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Bruce,
about the dark haired beauty- if this weren’t the 30’s, I’d bet my Sylvia Sidney collection on Jennifer Jones- but she was still Phyllis Isley then and only making movies/serials at Poverty Row…so I just throw in my 2 cents and keep my collection 😉
Interesting page again, I guess Gable, Loy and Crawford are a good run for “Star of the Decade”- though the wonderful book “They had Faces then”, covering each and every single actress of the 30’s, even the totally forgotten ones like Toby Wing or Fredi Washington “crowns” Bette as Queen of the 30’s…much to my own liking 🙂 Garbo had the highest prestige in the day, based on her acting, beauty and MGM publicity, but not always box office love. Sidney and Sullavan are, sadly, in the “also ran” category, but without actresses like them, the 30’s would have been highly different. So thank you for this informative overview on one of Hollywood’s truly golden decades.
Hey Lupino….thanks for the suggestion that it is Jennifer Jones…..it could be….but I am not thinking so….if only because she was unknown for that decade. So I think you are making a good decision in not risking that Sidney collection.
I thought your favorite actually did pretty well in the rankings…..as Sullavan has some pretty good averages. I agree that Gable is easily the star of the decade. As for the actresses…..lots of good candidates….which I judge as too close to call.
Thanks for the feedback.
