Who were the Top Movie Stars of the 1950s statistically? This page will attempt to answer that question. Our main source of information was our Ultimate Movie Ranking (UMR) pages that covered movie stars that made movies in the 1950s. So far we have box office grosses on 1,455 movies made between 1950 and 1959. Granted this is far from all the movies made during that time frame….but it does cover most of the major movie releases in that decade.
We have included four lists of information. List one looks at the Top 15 stars by adjusted domestic box office (the Top Star might surprise you). List two looks at the Top 15 stars by highest average rating per movie according to critics and audiences. List three looks at the Top 15 Stars by highest average UMR score per movie. List four shows our entire table of all the stars we looked at while complying these lists.

Top Stars In Other Decades
What no Donald O’Connor and Francis the Talking Mule!
Hey Dan…congrats on reaching 1000 comments….sorry I did not notice that before…that is a lot of comments and your efforts are greatly appreciated. Since you are such an awesome contributor here…I figured I would add Donald O’Connor to the page…he comes in 82 place when looking at box office for the year….the only movie I was unable to find box office information on was 1950’s The Milkman. Good catch on his absence.
FYI….his six Francis franchise movies earned an adjusted domestic box office of $597.50 million…..Clint Eastwood’s Francis movie was easily the lowest grosser of the six.
Just updated this page which has been a Top 5 page in 2019….did not see that coming.
I’m trying to find which US male star of 50-60s was a sailor and lost a son off a ship in a storm.
The actor came to UK with diplomat father at US embassy and they put the actor in a UK private school.
I was thinking it was Sterling Hayden but cannot find any link to him losing a son off a ship.
Father then lost interest in acting and went sailing.
Could it have been one called Robert?
Hey Rose White….I am not aware of this actor…hopefully some of our “movie experts” can identify this actor. I know Dean Martin pretty much became a recluse after his son died in a plane accident….but that is the only one I can think off.
Bob….I have no idea….do you have any idea here?
HI BRUCE
In an effort to be possibly helpful,I have in fact been giving this matter some thought, and have looked at many possibilities, ever since I saw Rose’s post flagged up 2 days ago.
So far regretfully I have been unsuccessful but if I come across anything that might fit Rose’s bill I will of course post the results on this page.
One problem has been that as you and I have discussed recently most of today’s celeb devotees are not interested in performers of bygone years so that [unless historical mega legends like The Kennedys are involved]the majority of reports in the public domain about loss of children of the rich and famous via accident etc tend to relate to modern performers, and of the latter a lot are simply” famous for being famous” and indeed some of them yours truly himself has never even heard of!
It is good of you nevertheless to cast your net as widely as possible to try to help Rose. Has Flora seen your appeal? – she’s usually good at identifying bygone movie stars in the kinds of situations that Rose describes.
I saw this appeal, Bob, and have tried to come up with the actor’s name, but I have been unable to come up with the answer.
HI FLORA
Well done for trying. Another problem could be if the star gave up acting it seems likely he was not one of the front line performers – most of the Greats carried on until the death!
In the 50s and 60s we didn’t of course have the internet and all the multitude of information outlets like Wikipedia, so that a lot of the problems of the more minor stars would have gone under the radar whereas the tragic death of Dino’s son that Bruce mentioned was well publicized.
Take care.
Several questions arise here…
If the actor in question lost his SON in a storm at sea, then wouldn’t he then be a bit OLD to be put in a UK private school? And was he a sailor and THEN went into acting? And wouldn’t anyone, actor OR sailor have NO interst in sailing having lost a child that way?
A bit more to go on would help.
I’m thinking perhaps “Rose White” meant to say that the actor had a diplomat father and attended a UK private school. Then in the 50s-60s, he became a sailor and that’s when he lost his son. Sterling Hayden is who came to mind as well, but I don’t know about the diplomat father or the lost son.
That would leave Hayden out. He was a High School drop out.
Thanks for the thoughts. Sterling Hayden does fit lots of these clues….but as far as I can tell none of his 6 kids had a tragic ending like that. Hayden did take his kids out to sea…..which he was in contempt of court….but returned with all the kids….he came back when his money ran out. And as Hibi points out…Hayden was a high school drop out….so not thinking English Prep Schools were even in Hayden’s vocabulary.
Hey Rose White….thinking you have stumped the panel. Maybe one day, I will stumble across the answer to your question. Sorry we were unable to answer your question.
Yep, I know as the ’50s and ’60s came around Warners got into the big productions, often buying hit Broadway shows or making epics from popular novels. I was just curious about the last half of the ’40s, where they seemed a bit light on hits and new stars (aside from Doris Day).
I would tend to agree with you. They still had some box office success….just not a monster hit. Their 1946 Night and Day did well, Life with Father in 1947, Key Largo and Johnny Belinda in 1948 did well. 1949 looks like a bad year for them…as June Haver’s Look For The Silver Lining was the only one to cross $3 million in rentals.
Thanks, Bruce. I just wanted to get a second opinion… I’m writing about a WB star and gauging the studio immediately post-war. And it seems like they were changing gears then and not kicking out a lot of big hits or new stars.
A question to those who are up on classic movie rankings in terms of box office grosses. Is it my imagination or was WB a little light on the hits in the late ’40s? I know once Doris Day signed, they had a big box office star on their hands. In doing some light background research for my next post, it seems like they didn’t have a lot of big hits post-war, at least through 1950. Thoughts?
Hmmmm….let me look at my Variety Top Grossers of the 1950s. They did pretty well. They co-produced Around The World In 80 Days with United Artist (5th biggest hit of decade), Giant (13th biggest hit of decade), Sayonara (24th biggest hit of the 1950s) House of Wax (27th biggest hit), Auntie Mame (29th biggest), 3 more hit the Top 50. So they had 9 or 18% of the Top 50 hits of the 1950s. Which I think is pretty good.
