Who were the Top Movie Stars of the 1960s statistically? This page will attempt to answer that question. Our main source of information was our Ultimate Movie Ranking (UMR) pages that covered movie stars that made movies in the 1960s. So far we have box office grosses on 1,644 movies made between 1960 and 1969. Granted this is far from all the movies made during that time frame….but it does cover most of the major movie releases in that decade.
We have included four lists of information. List one looks at the Top 15 stars by adjusted domestic box office (the Top Star might surprise you). List two looks at the Top 15 stars by highest average rating per movie according to critics and audiences. List three looks at the Top 15 Stars by highest average UMR score per movie. List four shows our entire table of all the stars we looked at while complying these lists.

I don’t know how “John” got deleted. Could you put it back in place of anonymous?
Hey John
1. I can’t fix your Anonymous until I get home.
2. As for Lemmon’s victory on the critic average score….yes Wayne made more movies…and yes his Top 13 topped Lemmon’s Top 13. But his final 13 have to be taken into account as well. Lemmon has some low scoring movies too.
3. I have enjoyed your guesss on these decade pages…..now start thinking about Sly,Babs, Ryan O’Neal and Bobby Pacino and the 1970s
Ah the 60s… tree-hugging hippies… high profile assassinations… Vietnam… British Pop Invasion… “she loves you yeah yeah yeah!” …my name is Bond, James Bond… the Space Race… Cleopatra… Blow Up… 2001 A Space Odyssey….
Good to see the Brits making a dent in some of these charts. Julie Andrews was the star of the biggest box office success of the 60s and for a while the biggest film of all time.
James Bond was massive, they took a gamble with a Scotsman named Sean Connery, which paid off handsomely and a new star was born.
And the success of Alfie followed by The Ipcress File quickly turned Michael Caine into a household name.
Richard Harris and Peter O’Toole were big too.
There you have it, my comprehensive survey of the 1960s movie scene, I hope I haven’t left anybody out.
Cheerio
Hey Steve…yep the 1960s was when England took back America. I am glad that Sir Michael made the trip. From movies to television to music you Brits left your mark for sure. Thanks for the feedback.
Yes so he should John Wayne was the best
I agree Elizabeth….he is one of the all-time greats.
POSTSCRIPT TO MY 4.17am POST
It should be remembered that what we call the Modern Era of the cinema is considered by film historians to have begun in 1962 so Bruce’s 1960s roundup is the first wide ranging summary that I personally have seen of a decade of the official new Era and the survey covers most of that decade.
Hey Bob…I agree this gets us to the modern era. Happily lots of people are still working that are on this page. Caine, Nicholson (he is finally making a new movie), Ann-Magret, Alan Atkin, MacLaine and Segal come to mind.
I know I researched Alan Arkin and yet he is not in the table…messed that up.
1. Good to see Michael Caine at last making his debut in one these surveys. One of the Brando videos for which Bruce helpfully gave me a link had a quick montage of actors and actresses talking about Marlon including Michael who said he was a life-long Brando fan
2. When the interviewer asked if he had ever met Marlon during his visits to Hollywood he replied yes but added that on the first occasion he Caine was as tongue-tied as a “young girl meeting Elvis for the first time” – Caine had a lovely way of expressing things! – and Michael went on to say he never dared speak throughout that initial meeting until Marlon invited him to do so.
1 He added though that overall they got on well. I remember Michael previously saying that when he made Gambit with the wonderful Shirley MacLaine in 1966 she graciously did the rounds with him as a ‘newcomer’ and introduced him to many celebs such as Marlon.
4 Anyway this 60s survey is another fascinating comprehensive document which charts the changing tastes of the public in relation to both stars and types of movies they watched as well as enabling those like me who are interested in stats to compare one decade’s box office performances with those of other decades. Super stuff.
Hey Bob
1. Thanks for checking out and commenting on our latest decade page.
2. This will be Caine’s first of 6 decades that he will appear…thinking he will do the best in the 2010 decade…though most of his movies were supporting.
3. Caine is a great storyteller. Love his books.
4. Good to know he has fond memories of Brando.
5. Speaking of Brando….his numbers in the 1960s are actually better than I thought they would be.
Thanks for the kind words.
