Who were the Top Movie Stars of the 1960s statistically? This page will attempt to answer that question. Our main source of information was our Ultimate Movie Ranking (UMR) pages that covered movie stars that made movies in the 1960s. So far we have box office grosses on 1,644 movies made between 1960 and 1969. Granted this is far from all the movies made during that time frame….but it does cover most of the major movie releases in that decade.
We have included four lists of information. List one looks at the Top 15 stars by adjusted domestic box office (the Top Star might surprise you). List two looks at the Top 15 stars by highest average rating per movie according to critics and audiences. List three looks at the Top 15 Stars by highest average UMR score per movie. List four shows our entire table of all the stars we looked at while complying these lists.

HI BRUCE 1 I agree that MB’s 60s box office stats are far better than the hyperbole has led us to believe. About a year ago a film historian speaking on the radio said that whilst Bud was not one of the top 1960s stars either artistically or commercially some of his movies had made money and even the flops had often been exaggerated.
2 However she did not back up her contentions with stats and your site is first source which I have ever seen that put Brando’s 60s box office performance in proper STATISTICAL perspective. A 1960s average of $78.3 million compares very unfavourably with the 1950s when his 11 movies averaged $192.6 million but that 60s average stands reasonably well alongside the following examples of 1960s averages.
Robert Mitchum $74.1 million
Burt Lancaster $72.9
Sophia Loren $69.2 – and Loren was said to be a Top 1960s star!
Kirk Douglas $69.0
Elvis $62.2 – though he of course also had a big earning musical career
3 And just look at these ENTIRE CAREER averages in Cogerson.
Burt Reynolds $75.5 million
Bette Davis $74.4
Steven Seagal $73.5 – though the FBI could have caused this!
Charles Bronson $62.7
4 In the 1970s MB made only 6 films for which his present Cogerson adjusted domestic average is roughly $300 million which equates to a $1.8 billion total domestic gross which in turn would equate to 14th place in your 60s main table [3rd on averages] That means that for just the 17 movies MB made in the 1950s and 1970s his adjusted domestic average is approx $231 million, total domestic $3.92 billion. As a movie stats buff and he is one of my faves I always thought it was a shame that MB didn’t make more films in those two decades when it was all going for him and he was most in demand. He might have even got a wee bit closer to Myrna in totals!
5 Anyhow sufficient onto the day and I was delighted to see Dick Van Dyke doing so well on your 60s page. He was of course never a big box office leading figure in the cinema but he is my favourite TV performer and his 13th placing on your main table would alone have made this 60s review a happy one for me. As I said in my previous post compelling stuff. Looking forward to precise details of Sir Maurice in subsequent decades.
Hey Bob
1. You are 100% correct about Brando and his averages in the 1970s …..they are going to be outstanding and near the top…..too bad it will not be enough movies to make our Top 15 lists (minimum 9 movies).
2. I am currently looking for non-UMR stars to finish my 1970s decades page….sorry Steve…hoping to finish on Monday evening.
3. I think Brando’s fall from all-time greatness in the 1950s to not so greatness in the 1960s has hidden the fact that his 1960s was not all that bad. Your attached averages proof that point. In other words he was standing on Mount Everest in the 1950s and only standing on Distaghli Sar (the 20th highest point in the world).
4. Glad you liked that Dick Van Dyke made the list….he was one of the non-UMR pickups for this page.
FYI….Robert Shaw has been added to the table since your comment.
Thanks as always for the comment.
Hey Bob you will be happy to know that I have changed Raw Mind in Eden on my Esther Williams page. This whole time I have to admit that I was unsure what you were talking about…but finally the movie title is fixed on her page. Saw Wind on Eden right? …lol?
HI BRUCE
1 I am a big Esther Williams fan and the continued presence of Raw “mind” on her page was for me a constant blight on it.
2 For historical reasons Esther’s is one of those Cogerson pages that I most treasure in my collection and it seemed to me that an otherwise great “ship was being spoilt for a ha’porth of tar.”
3 So thanks for making the amendment.
Glad I could finally fix that error…..not sure how I missed I had it wrong….all these months I was trying to figure out what you were talking about….but now I do….sometimes I can be slow….lol. Glad the Esther page is one of your favorites. Lot so of worldwide grosses on that one. 🙂
Hey Bruce, thanks for your responses to my comments yesterday and the additional info about Peppard’s films in the 60s. Glad you found a book that seems to use a similar approach to rank box office leaders. Fair enough. For me, the term ‘box office leaders’ still conjures up the notion of ‘greatest stars’, but I understand you are not necessarily looking at it that way.
In any case, as I threatened yesterday, I attempted to put together my own list of the most successful stars of the decade, taking into account your box office, critical and UMR rankings, but also factoring in a few other things: whether they were stars or supporting actors in the relevant films; popularity (partly based on the Quigley Poll that I know you have some reservations on, but still should not be ignored); number of important or classic films during the decade if any; and consistency of output during the decade. Again, this list in no way pretends to be scientific and I’m sure many would find much to disagree with, but for what it’s worth, this is my take (I found it hard to limit it to 15 so I included 25 stars):
1. Paul Newman (several so-so films, but some great ones too, plus very popular and successful at box office throughout decade)
2. Jack Lemmon (consistent with your UMR)
3. Julie Andrews (higher box office overall than first 2, but less films and not active during first 4 years of the decade)
4. Steve McQueen
5. Audrey Hepburn
6. John Wayne
7. Sean Connery (success in 60s mainly limited to his James Bond films)
8. Sidney Poitier
9. Elizabeth Taylor
10. Richard Burton
11. Natalie Wood
12. Doris Day (very popular in the first half of the decade)
13. Charlton Heston (factoring in the impact of Ben-Hur in 1960)
14. Shirley MacLaine
15. Burt Lancaster
16. Rock Hudson (same as Day)
17. Peter O’Toole (his very high UMR due to relatively few films)
18. Peter Sellers (rather low on your UMR, but some his work in the 60s is legendary)
19. Cary Grant (few films, but still a big attraction for several years)
20. Dean Martin
21. Tony Curtis
22. Gregory Peck (declined considerably after To Kill a Mocking Bird)
23. Frank Sinatra
24. James Garner (most popular in mid-60s, strong box office and critical rating overall)
25. Lee Marvin (starring roles mainly in second part of the decade)
Only 3 of your top 15 UMR stars did not make my list:
Omar Sharif: Apart from Dr. Zhivago, Funny Girl, and maybe Night of the Generals, I could not find other notable films where he was a star in the 60s
Richard Harris: I suspect his relatively high UMR score is partly due to films where he was more of a co-star (Mutiny on the Bounty, Hawaii) or in cameo roles (Guns of Navarone, The Bible)
Hayley Mills: I may underestimate her as I’m not that familiar with her films, but it seems to consist of successful but not particularly memorable Disney fare and the like.
Phil
Interesting to consider what performers most define a decade. In some cases–Gable in the 1930’s, Bergman in the 1940’s, and Brando in the 1950’s–box office and impact dovetail. With others though–Cagney in the 1930’s, Bogart in the 1940’s–the box office doesn’t quite match the long term impact.
So, to cut to the chase. I still think of Steve McQueen as defining the sixties (with Newman also close to the top), while Wayne seems almost outside of time. I stick with Julie Andrews as the decade defining actress.
Hey John. I agree with most of your comment with the exception of not including Lemmon amongst the greats of the decade. The Apartment, Days of Wine and Roses, The Odd Couple, The Great Race and Irma La Doche. He had it all. Box office hits, individual Oscar nominations, Best Picture Oscar winners, good reviews from critics and audiences. He might not be the top star, but he is in the discussion.
John, Bruce,
If I can give my 2 cents here. I think maybe “defining a decade” is not quite the same thing as being the greatest star of the decade. Lemmon may have been among the top, or arguably the top star, but he, and many of his best films in the 60s, could have more easily belonged to the 50s. I can see John’s point that McQueen was more defining of the 60s in that his taciturn anti-hero persona became increasingly fashionable, with films like The Cincinnati Kid, The Sand Pebbles and Bullit, and in tune with where the decade was going and how it paved the way for the next decade. I do think Newman was perhaps equally defining with films like The Hustler, Harper, Cool Hand Luke and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid helping to set some of the trends of the 60s and early 70s. Finally, one should not forget how the rise of Sidney Poitier, and the impact of his 1967 classic trio (In the Heat of the Night, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and To Sir With Love), both reflected the social changes that were happening and contributed to breaking the race barrier. So, McQueen, Newman and Poitier get my vote in defining the 60s, which takes nothing away from Lemmon as perhaps the most successful star of the 60s, and and an extremely talented one.
Hey Phil…great points. I think there are so many greats in this decade that it would be hard to say someone’s top pick is right or wrong. I just gave my Top 10 for the 1970s…and I found it hard to limit my picks to 10.
McQueen is a solid pick…but Newman’s “H” movies are hard to ignore: Hud, Hustler, Cool Hand, Harper and Hombre. To me this is what makes this lists so much fun to compile and to read.
Good feedback as always.
Hey Phil.
1. First of all…..kudos on a wonderful breakdown of this decade…job well done. I am impressed.
2. I like most of your rankings.
3. That being said Peter O’Toole is too love….yes he made only 11 movies but that is more than Andrews….and almost the same of many of the ones you listed. Plus you have Hudson higher than him? O’Toole’s trilogy of Lawrence, Beckett and Lion certainly tops Rock best of the 1960s.
4. No issues with your Top 10…..all worthy selections.
5. Sharif’s awesome 1960s kept him famous for the rest of his life.
6. No issues with you not including Mills or Harris.
7. I used the Quigley polls to find some of the non- UMR stars…..so they are helpful and interesting even if they are flawed…..like everything else in life :).
8. The stats do not back it up…but I think Elvis could have made the Top 25….you can’t look at too many 1960s movies without stumbling across on Elvis movie.
Once again …..this is a great comment….thanks for doing it.
Hey Bruce,
Thanks for your feedback on my list! Yes, after doing it, I thought perhaps O’Toole and Marvin belonged a little bit higher up, and maybe Elvis, Kirk Douglas and George Peppard could have just made the cut instead of a few of the others, or at least come close. I see your point on Sharif as well. Dr Zhivago made him something of an icon.
As compared to O’Toole and Sharif, Hudson scored points with the Quigley Poll, where he appeared among the top 3 stars in the first 5 years of the decade, whereas O’Toole and Sharif were never in the top 10! (not sure if they made the top 25 for some years) This could again be a reflection of John’s “glow from the past” phenomenon, but it’s hard to completely ignore it. It’s possible that O’Toole and Sharif were bigger than Hudson internationally, but middle America still had a preference for home-grown all-American talent….at least in the first half of the decade. Of course, if 1955 to 1964 was a decade, then stars like Hudson, Sinatra and Curtis would perform much better on both of our lists, so a lot of this depends on where you cut the cake 🙂
You listing your Top 25 got me motivated to do a Top 10 on our brand new 1970s decade page. I think Hudson was out of gas by the mid 1960s……which is why I mentioned him. Good points on O’Toole and Sharif. 🙂
John Wayne would be no 1 in my book anytime, anywhere ,or anyplace.
Hey Elwanda….. John Wayne is one of my Top 10 stars of all-time. Been watching his movies since I was a kid. So I agree with your comment 100%.
Glad to see Peck and Audrey Hepburn both on this list. It’s great to see that some people on this list are still alive. I have been enjoying these decade pages. Interesting that Julie Andrews beat out Wayne (good for her).
Hey Flora….glad you like these pages….I have had fun putting them together. Yep Mary Poppins takes down the Duke…even though Wayne had 12 more movies than Andrews. Peck will be making an appearance on the 1970s and 1980s pages…..not sure his totals in the 1990s will get much attention. Thanks for the feedback and the visit.
I never noticed the people on the list that you have not done pages on before.
Hey Dan….to make the page more accurate….I felt I needed to include stars that made Quigley or got some Oscar love but did not have an UMR page. I did not do that on the first decade pages.
