Who were the Top Movie Stars of the 1970s statistically? This page will attempt to answer that question. Our main source of information was our Ultimate Movie Ranking (UMR) pages that covered movie stars that made movies in the 1960s. So far we have box office grosses on 2,123 movies made between 1970 and 1979. Granted this is far from all the movies made during that time frame….but it does cover most of the major movie releases in that decade.
We have included four lists of information. List one looks at the Top 15 stars by adjusted domestic box office. List two looks at the Top 15 stars by highest average rating per movie according to critics and audiences. List three looks at the Top 15 Stars by highest average UMR score per movie. List four shows our entire table of all the stars we looked at while complying these lists.

I see I am getting mentions about my views on the 1970’s. I will put together reaction comments at some point. But I did do a “guess” preview post on May 27 on the Site Index.
BRUCE [JOHN ALSO TO SEE]
You and Steve disappeared over the weekend. Where was your hideout and may I use it?
Hey Bob….Memorial Day weekend is huge at house and area….so we were at the beach, the pool and cookouts…..not to mention our backyard golf course….an excellent weekend for sure.
BRUCE You earned it at least from a viewer’s perspective.
Thanks Bob….thought the site is about to go on auto pilot..trying to set things up so it will look like somebody is home….even though I will be out of the state until Saturday or Sunday. #3 son is graduating from boot camp.
Hey John…looking forward towards your thoughts on this decade. I need to move over the comment on the site index page…..but I will say it was a “spot on” comment.
My personal thoughts on the top stars of the 1970s…or what I think of the rankings my database spot out.
On the outside of the Top 10… but not in the top ten
Harrison Ford, Gene Hackman and Robert DeNro
10th. Diane Keaton….first half of decade she was better known as a supporting player….but ended the decade as the most popular actress
9th Richard Dreyfuss…..sad he peaked as an actor in 1978
8th Al Pacino…..not a favorite but his 1970 decade is truly impressive
7th Faye Dunaway….Oscars and box office hits
6th Robert Redford…our UMR champ has the stats but not enough classic movies
5th Marlon Brando….his low output of 6 movies keeps him from an even higher ranking
4th Clint Eastwood…good stats but what are the great Clint movies of the 1970s? Ok I give you The Outlaw Josie Wells
3rd Dustin Hoffman…. after an epic 1970s he only made two or three movies in the 1980s
2nd Barbra Streisand.,., she was the biggest star in the 1970s
1st Jack Nicholson….acuatlly shocked his stars are so unimpressive….but Jack was the man in the 1970s
Cogerson
I found your comments on Redford and Streisand contradictory. Redford has “not enough classic movies” so he’s dropped to 6th. Streisand “was the biggest star in the 1970’s.” But on what basis? Box office? Perhaps the biggest female star, but how does she get ahead of Redford. And what about the quality of Streisand’s movies compared to Keaton or Dunaway. Both were in real classics in this decade. I don’t think Streisand was. Her critical average is 61.2% to Keaton’s 78.2% and Dunaway’s 71.4%.
“Jack was the man in the 1970’s”–having lived through the decade and having had girlfriends going on about Redford and forcing me to take them to his movies, I can’t really agree. Redford was the big “star” of the decade. Off topic, but women are so shallow about such things, just going for an actor because he is handsome. Us guys have so much more depth. By the way, is there any chance of having a Chelo Alonso chart on your board? What about Jayne Mansfield?
JOHN
1 You know of course Streisand got billed above Redford when they mad The Way they Were together?
2. I think The Work Horse should get W o C to consider and respond to your comment about “women are so shallow about such things” You know of course that George Cukor loved directing women more than men and in fact made the famous movie The Women in which no man is ever seen?
Hey Bob….WoC is not too influenced too much by looks (thank goodness…lol). I think a few men have seen The Women….now some of Cukor’s other movies…..lol.
HI BRUCE Composite response to your recent posts to me –
(1) I think your personal Top 10 does capture much of the SPIRIT of the 70s cinema. Brando for example didn’t make many films but his 6 chalked up huge grosses and the continuing reflected glory from the Godfather and to a lesser extent Last Tango along with all the publicity he got from huge salaries and his connection with the end decade blockbusters Superman and the now-classic Apocalypse Now all combined to make him a key player who was very much talked about in the movie world of the 1970s MB was in fact on his return from the 1960s wilderness feted like the Biblical Son. l Like John I would have had Redford at No 1 but it that would reflect only very refined tuning and you DID make Robert a high 6th so I for one would not be dogmatic in the matter.
(2) Whilst most of my cinema idols are from the Classic Era some of them DO belong to the Modern Era such as Morgan Freeman, Streisand , Julia Roberts and,Sir Maurice [whose first credited role in A Hill in Korea was actually way back in 1956 and co-starred his Zulu mentor Sir Stanley Baker] . There are also a lot of Modern Era stars whom I at least like very well and/or greatly admire – DeNiro, Hanks, Pacino, Steve Martin, Costner and Willis for example. In addition whilst I don’t like performers such as Goldie Hawn, Bullock and the ex Mrs Willis I nevertheless have a keen historical interest in the development of their careers. All of that combined with the compulsion to continue to compare/contrast the box office of the succeeding decades with that of the past will ensure my continuing attention to your decade by decade reviews. However I am sure that we would all welcome it if we hear less from John now that we’ve moved beyond his fave cinematic era!!!
3 Perhaps I should address this comment to your automatic pilot ! I see you’re off galavanting again. Boy you do get around and it occurs to me it’s a pity you weren’t
in touch with Brando/Streisand when they did all those road trips that Babs has spoken of because they might have invited to join them! It means though that I’m stuck on my own with Steve again while you’re gone but as Charles Bickford said to Chuck whom he thought was going to desert him in The Big Country “Well, I don’t mind, I’ve been on my own before.”
(4) Seriously though I’m sure all your regulars would, as I do, want you to convey to your son our sincere best wishes.
Hey John….my Top 10…..tried to ignore the stats…when comparing stats….Redford destroys everybody else….yet my memory of the 1970s is that Jack was the star that registered home for me. Probably had a lot to do with One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and all of his Oscar love he got that decade. I was too young to take girls to theaters…so Redford’s influence on the women on the world escaped me. To me Brad Pitt is the current Redford….a star no doubt but his acting skills are rarely mentioned. While Jack got all the “great actor” buzz.
I have to admit I have not heard of Chelo Alonso….but I can see doing a Mansfield page in the near future. 🙂
But Bruce, all I see are names with numbers after them, what does it all mean amigo? [wink wink]
The first name I looked for was Charles Bronson, an idol of mine during the 70s, I was a much bigger fan of his than Paul Newman or Robert Redford. Sadly he only turns up on the big chart and not only did he miss the top 20 he isn’t even in the top 100. I cry foul.
Good to see Charlton ‘It’s a mad house!” Heston make it to one of the charts, another big idol of mine Clint Eastwood was big box office during the 70s, I know, I was there. So his ranking on some charts is a bit lower than expected.
Bruce Lee only had one major hit in the US, Enter the Dragon, so I didn’t expect him to turn up on any charts. Did I mention I used to sellotape Bruce Lee Posters on my car. I cringe thinking about it now.
Nice to see the demon-possessed Regan MacNeil in one of your pictures, that deserves a thumbs up from me. My favorite horror movie from that decade. I saw The Exorcist a couple of times on the big screen when I was a kid and it did frighten me a bit. I’d already read the novel and still wasn’t prepared for the projectile vomit, glad it wasn’t in 3D.
Another epic stats filled movie page Bruce. Vote Up!
Hey Steve
1. Sorry my return comment on your comment seems to have disappeared.
2. But I will do it again.
3. Mr. Bronson…..well….on the big chart he does have the 60th spot when looking at box office grosses. He was busy….making 19 movies….but with the exception of Death Wish and The Valachi Papers he did not have many $100 million adjusted grossers….Breakout came close too.
4. When it came to reviews and awards….Mr. Bronson did not get alot of love….I think Bruce Willis and Jason Statham are the modern day Charlie Bronson…..which both have remade Bronson movies…..The Mechanic for Statham and Death Wish for Willis.
5. I was really surprised when Heston showed up so high in the box office rankings….after topping our charts in the 1950s he slipped a little bit in the 1960s only to rebound so strong in the 1970s….that has me thinking I should have included him in my Top 100 stars page.
6. I probably need to add Bruce Lee into the table…..the beauty of this page is that I can easily include them as I get the box office numbers…for instance I just added Marsha Mason to this list.
7. I felt I had to include The Exorcist in the page…at least in some capacity.
As always thanks for the feedback.

Must not have a link to this page on the site index. But there is no Joan conspiracy here….lol.
HI BRUCE
1 I wrote in good faith but nevertheless it’s my second time today to eat humble pie because not only had you done the 1945 page but Joan tops it !!!.
2 Anyway I now have all the info I need for a clean sweep of my 1940s project. Once again I’m indebted to you.
BRUCE/JOHN 1 Good to see the appearance of the Work Horse’s 1970s survey as Cogerson is now going deep into the Modern Era and providing us with a reasonable amount of data with which to start making comparisons with the Classic Era. The 70s charts include most of the 1970s stars whom one would have expected to be there. I was naturally delighted at Chuck doing well and my big disappointment was that Sir Maurice did not cut a great deal of ice.
2 Given that Brando’s scores would have been reasonably favourable in all categories it was disappointing that there were not enough of his films for him to make the Top 15s cuts. However it’s his fault because after Godpop they threw so much money at him he could barely be bothered to mumble let alone work and indeed it is reported that mumbling was all he would have done if he’d gotten away with it as apparently he didn’t even want to appear in Superman for all those millions they paid him but instead attempted to persuade the Salkinds to use just a tape of his voice which would emerge from some sort of alien figure – MB argued Joe El wouldn’t have looked like us humans!
3 I’m not sure if we’ll get much of a contribution from John because you may remember that on one occasion when I compared unfavourably Cooper’s stats with those of modern actors like Harrison Ford John put me down with a scolding that he was interested in only the performers of Cooper’s times. I do hope though that he DOES contribute to this page as I always enjoy his comments and indeed when I argue with him it is not so much that I disagree totally with what he is saying but that I am seeking to bring finesse to his observations. Though I see there is now on this site some person called Anonymous whose posts also need a bit of tidying-up.
4 I am using extensively your 1940s Annual Reviews for another of my private projects and notice that 1945 is the one year missing. It may be a coincidence but that was the year Joan got her Oscar for Mildred Pierce.
Hey Bob…..glad you liked this page as well…I figure the closer I get to today’s stars…the less you and John will have to comment about…so I am glad to see you and John commenting on this page. Wonder if that will happen when I get to the 1980s and 1990s.
Sir Caine did not have a great decade in the 1970s….movies like The Swarm, Silver Bears and Beyond the Poseidon Adventure did not help his cause.
I hope you saw that in my personal Top 10….I listed Brando in the 5th spot. As for Heston…..the man was still at the top in this decade…at least when looking at box office grosses. Good stuff from you. 🙂
Cogerson and Bob
My posts will end with the 1970’s. I might still comment on the old stars though on their sites.
HI JOHN
1 Thanks for the courtesy of informing us of your intended reaction to future decade by decade polls.
2 However there are many movie stars who don’t interest me but I still like to examine how their careers stack up with those of my favourites and it occurs to me that as you seem to have a greater grasp of the technicalities of filming than most of us regulars on this site the later decades would certainly give you a lot of scope to provide informed comment on the improved technology in relation to things such as special effects.and the impact that you see such improvements having had on the box office.
