  1. Hi Cogerson, good work on getting box office info on another noteworthy British thespian. I find Trevor Howard to always be an interesting actor to watch, very charismatic and convincing. He made a remarkable start as a romantic leading man in the classic Brief Encounter, but quickly became earmarked in harder and authoritarian roles. His Captain Bligh in Mutiny on the Bounty was unforgettable, and at the risk of raising controversy, I think he made that movie more than Brando did 🙂 I’ve seen 16 of the films on the list. Other favorites are The Third Man, Gandhi, Operation Crossbow and Ryan’s Daughter.

    1. Hey PhilHoF17….thanks for stopping by and commenting on our Trevor Howard page. Tally counts: Tally count: 17 for Steve, 16 for me and you and 15 for Flora. I have seen and enjoyed all the movies you mentioned in your comment, except for Operation Crossbow…which I have not seen. I agree `00% with you and “His Captain Bligh in Mutiny on the Bounty was unforgettable.” Probably the best Bligh….though I am sure Laughton fans would disagree. Good stuff as always.

  2. I have seen 15 Trevor Howard movies.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is Around the World in 80 Days.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Mutiny on the Bounty.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is Triple Cross.

    Operation Crossbow
    Battle for Britain
    Run For the Sun
    Father Goose
    The Key
    Green For Danger
    The Sea Wolves

Other Trevor Howard Movies I Have Seen:

    Ghandi
    Ryan’s Daughter
    Sons and Lovers
    Triple Cross

    1. Hey Flora….as always thanks for the feedback on our latest page. Tally count: 17 for Steve, 16 for me and PhilHoF17 and 15 for you…..shocked you are not only not in the lead….but at the bottom….that does not happen too often when we are looking at classic actors. But don’t worry, your track record is so stellar…we will not hold this against you….lol.

Equally shocked you have not seen Mutiny on the Bounty….I actually like this movie (just do not tell Bob…lol)…Howard is very good in the movie. I have seen 8 of your favorites….with Father Goose being the movie I re-watch the most. I need to re-watch Battle for Britain. Ryan’s Daughter is a beautiful movie….and one of the reasons WoC wants to visit Ireland…though I have been told….the area that filmed at…is now a huge tourist attraction. Good stuff as always.

      1. HI BIG BOY: Interesting exchanges between you and The Real Cogerson Queen. I forgot to say “Made it Ma – top of the world!” I have seen 20 Howard movies; though I qualify my triumph with the thought that Flora is having an off-day. My own further comments are –

1/Father Goose is one of my least fave Leach movies compared with Archie classics such as N by NW and Notorious – I thought Goose was an inferior version of Bogie’s African Queen and as I told you before with Al’s leading lady being the much younger Leslie I thought it should have been called Daddy Goose or Father Sugar! Bogie and Katie were more compatible: just 7 years between them against 27 between Alec and Caron.

2/Although I am a native of Ireland Ryan’s Daughter has never appealed to me. Also I remember a leading film critic who was a big Mitchum fan saying that he couldn’t watch it because it was “unrealistic” as Mitch’s character was portrayed as a poor lover – “ROBERT MITCHUM not good in bed – never!” that critic protested.

3/It’s amazing how tastes and standards change. Back in 1935 Laughton’s Bligh was all the rage. Nowadays not only is Howard’s Bligh considered the superior portrayal but many critics and indeed ordinary viewers castigate the Laughton outing as “hammy”.

  3. Hey Dan…as always…thanks for providing these awesome lists. Wow….Trevor has a spot on the Top 25…pretty damn impressive since he has not made a movie in 32 years. Interesting about Stevie only playing in one theater in New York City.

Looking at the first list….wow….epic list….lots of great stars on the list….with John Mills getting the honors for most frequent Oracle co-star. Lots of people made many movies with him. I guess making movies at a very regular clip will increase the amount of Oracle connections. I would have guessed more than 40 Oscar co-stars…still a good total. As always…great stuff.

  4. The first Trevor Howard movie I saw in a cinema was The Charge of the Light Brigade from 1968. I remember also going to a sneak preview, playing in only 1 cinema in NYC of Stevie, 2 years after it’s date, 1980.

Trevor Howard is # 25 on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list; these are the other actors he appeared with on the list. You are a glutton for punishment.

  5. The 1962 Mutiny on the Bounty has my favorite Fletcher Christian and Captain Bligh roles, plus it had the best photography and music score of the three big Bounty films to date. Good to see Trevor Howard in the UMR hall of fame. 🙂

I’ve seen 17 of the 76 films on the chart, less than I thought. Favorites include – Superman, Gandhi, Ryan’s Daughter, The Sea Wolves, Operation Crossbow, Around the World in 80 Days, Battle of Britain, Meteor and Mutiny on the Bounty.

Not a huge fan of The Third Man but it’s in the collection.

Like the Third Man, Brief Encounter is one of the all time great British classics, in the top 5. I’ve only watched that once. [Bob gasps]

    Nice work Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. HI STEVE

As I’ve said before The Third Man is probably my all time fave Brit movie; but whilst Brief Enclounter is OK I felt it was overrated. However that said Loren and Burton remade it in 1974 as a TV movie and that version does show how superior the Trevor Howard/Celia Johnson 1945 one actually was.

In an interview with Welles Michael Parkinson started to gush about how wonderful The Third Man was but Orson stopped Parky in his tracks and said “I’m sick of people asking me about that film everytime I give an interview. If you mention it again I’ll turn into a 4th Man!”

In my view though it was the greatest film in which Welles’ pal Joe Cotton had the lead role and possibly Joe’s best film overall with maybe the exception of Orson’s own Magnificent Ambersons.

Anyway I’m switching over now to YOUR latest production which looks like another Jen -sorry I mean Gem – of a video.

    2. Hey Steve….thanks for the thoughts on our Trevor Howard page. I liked his Mutiny on the Bounty as well….it looks amazing. Tally count….17 for you and 16 for me. I feel good that I have seen two of his early movies….Green for Danger and Brief Encounter. Of your favorites…seen them all except for Operation Crossbow. Meteor on the favorites list….I need to re-watch that legendary stinker again….seems I rotate between watching Meteor and The Swarm. Thanks for the vote up and the visit.
