Hi
Ive seen most of his big hits and I really like Alexander’s Ragtime Band Mark of Zorro and Jesse James. Because he was a matinee idol, the critics didn’t really give him much credit as an actor but I think he was really good, especially in Witness for the Prosecution. I can’t believe he was so young when he died. I think he had the makings of a great character actor, but sadly we’ll never know.
Hey Chris. Thanks for stopping by. Seems that time has almost forgotten about him. But from 1936 to 1957….all he did was make one hit movie after another. Even at the end of his career he was still appearing in blockbusters. Witness For The Prosecution and The Eddie Duchin Story are both $100 million dollar grossers. Over the last few years I have been watching lots of Power movies for the first time…I enjoyed Jesse James too….Black Swan is the one that really impressed me the most. As always….thanks for the visit and the comment.
I can’t not remember if you had any requests left? If you do a refresher would help me. Currently I am working on a Anthony Perkins page.
hi I think the main reason why he almost forgotten is because he didn’t have a great screen persona in the way of say Bogart, Wayne,Gable And if you compare him to the screens other greart swashbuckler Flynn, people are still writing about his love life. There is no doubt about his box office . You ask for request what about a page on child stars or Jane Fonda or Clahdette Colbert thanks again for your site
Hey Chris….I will add Claudette Colbert to the list of people to do….I imagine she is in my data base 20 or 30 times already…..seems everytime I do a classic actor…they have at one time or not starred opposite Colbert. Fonda is a good choice. As for child stars….I have almost all of Shirley Temple’s movies sitting in a notebook just waiting to be released….maybe it is time to final do a Shirley Temple page. Thanks for the suggestions.
Hey Chris. I was amazed how many box office hits Tyrone Power. When I do these pages the subject normally has a peak….but they are normally followed by some valleys….Power never came down the mountain when it comes to box office grosses……Llyod’s of London was big….and twenty plus years later….Witness for the Prosecution and Eddie Duchin Story were big box office hits. I have no doubt if he had finished Soloman it would have been a big hit too! I think you make a great point about him sliding into the character roles….it is a shame that he never got the chance to do that. Thanks as always for the comment and the visit.
Well Bruce, I have enjoyed this site VERY MUCH. I have seen quite a few of his movies and believe that he was a good actor. I remember while still living in Montreal that he was in town and on TV in Montreal discussing his film career. The Eddie Duchin Story was a tearjerker movie but very well done. – A GOOD LOVE STORY. Thanks for this site – another great job! THANKS.
Hey BERN…..glad you liked this Tyrone Power page….sorry it took so long to complete. That is cool that he was in Montreal doing interviews. I imagine that back then interviews where much more rare. The Eddie Duchin Story was one of his biggest hits…..even though he did not get along with Kim Novak during filming. Thanks for the visit and the comment.
HEY, THAT WAS GOOD ACTING THEN AS THEY SURE LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE IN LOVE. GREAT ACTING…..THE MUSIC WAS GREAT IN THAT MOVIE TOO.
THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY.
Hey Bern…..Mr. Power got no kudos for his acting….but I thought he was pretty good in almost all of the movies that I have seen him in. Thanks for the return visit.
Excellent work Bruce, Tyrone Power was one of the all time greats. Along with Fairbanks and Flynn, Hollywood’s three greatest swashbucklers. Lots of interesting info on your page, he died so young, 44 years old! Flynn made it to 50. I’ve seen 22 of the films you’ve listed here, probably more I can’t remember them all. I’ve never seen The Eddy Duchin story. I expected his last film Witness for the Prosecution to be higher on the moviescore chart. My favorite Power movie is probably The Mark of Zorro, a childhood favorite of mine, The Black Swan too. Thanks again for the poster link, his films produced some great looking movie posters.
Hey Steve. I have seen 18 of his movies. I think the one I liked the most was The Black Swan. As for Witness for the Prosecution. It did finish first in the critic audience category. Was one of 4 Power movies to pick up 6 Oscar nominations…which is the most for his movies. The only place Witness did not excel was box office…it was a hit….but was only his 17th biggest box office hit…that pulled the score down some….but it still finished 6th. It did score over 60….in my scoring system….40 is average. Let’s see where it ranked in my complete database….number 415 out of 21,232 movies….so it is overall ranked pretty high. Hope your poster page is found by some Tyrone Power fans out there.
Yet another wonderful look at one of my favorites. The man was money in the bank. The box office totals are very very impressive. His Nightmare Alley got destroyed at the box office. Another favorite did very well at the box office Crash Dive. Thanks for another fun page.
Hey Timlin33…..I agree he was pretty big when it came to outstanding box office grosses. I do not think 20th Century wanted to promote Nightmare Alley…..as it is pretty much goes against years of p.r. to make Power a hero. It is one of Danny Peary’s Cult Movie books. Thanks for stopping by and commenting
I like this page and I especially like this new website. Thanks for the heads up about it.
Thanks for stopping by Alabama Girl. Glad you like the new website….we are roughly half way through moving to this website
