UMR – By The Numbers 2017

A very good year here at UltimateMovieRankings.com.

3,689,136 total views for the website in 2017 – down 45,136 views from 2016*

210 countries reached – up 9 countries from 2016

13,175 cities reached – down 361 cities compared to 2016

180 new UMR pages and 1,147 UMR trailer pages written in 2017

2.02 days between new UMR pages in 2017….our lowest ratio ever!

*  Twice for a total of 21 days our view counter stopped working and registered no views for those days.  Using an average daily visit count for the missing days….would put our 2017 view total at 3,831,936….and would have probably added in a few cities as well.

UMR In Memoriam 2017

Every year we lose lots of people….2017 was no exception.  We do not write a UMR page on every movie actor that passes away…..but if it is somebody we feel connected to ….it seems to make us feel better.  In 2017 that happened 7 times.

UMR Pages Written After The Celebrity Passed Away

John Hurt passed away on January 25th, 2017….Hurt was one of the great character actors.  Leaves behind so many great roles.

Bill Paxton passed away on February 25th, 2017.   This was one of the more stunning passing of 2017.  “Game over” …but some many great movies in his legacy.

Glenne Headley passed away on June 8th 2017.  Headley starred in a couple of my favorite movies….Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Fandango.

Adam West passed away on June 9th, 2017.  West will always be Bruce Wayne/Batman to me.  RIP.

Martin Landau passed away July 17, 2017.   Landau was one of the last living connections to 1959’s North by Northwest….which is one of my and my dad’s favorite movies.

John Heard  passed away July  21st, 2017.    Something about the dad from Home Alone passing really bothered me.

Sam Shepard passed away July 27th, 2017.  The play writer and actor will also be the General in Black Hawk Down in my mind.

UMR Pages Written Before The Celebrity Passed Away

Roger Moore passed away on May 23rd, 2017. Moore was “my” James Bond growing up.  Sad day when I had heard of his passing.

Jerry Lewis passed away on August 20th, 2017.  The famous funny man passed away just a few days short of Labor Day.  Growing up Labor Day and Jerry Lewis almost seemed like the same thing.  Sad sad day.

Some of the Other Actors/Actresses/Film  That Passed Away In 2017

  1. Powers Booth – Tombstone, Red Dawn, Sin City
  2. Glen Campbell – True Grit
  3. Bernie Casey
  4. Stephen Furst – Animal House’s Kent Dorfman
  5. Robert Guillaume – The Lion King
  6. Richard Hatch – Battlestar Galactica
  7. Hugh Hefner – James Caan’s former roommate
  8. John Hillerman
  9. Rose Marie
  10. Mary Tyler Moore – Ordinary People
  11. Erin Moran – Happy Days
  12. Robert Osborne – TCM Legend
  13. Tom Petty – Soundtracks….with She’s The One….being my favorite
  14. Della Reese
  15. Don Rickles – Kelly’s Heroes, Toy Story movies
  16. Harry Dean Stanton

Finally….thanks to everybody that visited these pages and made 2017 a very successful year for us. Looking forward to an even better 2018.

  1. Happy new year every-one! Wow, what a distinguished honor to begin the year in the UMR Hall of Fame along side such illustrious commentators and movie critics 😉 Thank you! This has been a wonderful year for this web site, with many classic and modern stars and character actors earning their UMR page, an uninterrupted run of annual pages of annual office compilations ranging from 1935 to 1959, pages providing the box office and critical leaders by decades, best Wyatt Earp, teaching and Christmas movies, a direct link to Steve’s outstanding top films per star utube videos, all kinds of superhero movie pages (which I admit not always paying attention to as kept up with the latest and fastest) and many more. Congratulations Cogerson, WoC, and Fellow HaFamers! Wishing you good health, luck and happiness for 2018 🙂

    1. Hey PhilHOF2017
      1. I am sure SteinHOF2016 will get a kick out of you using that name….it was a movement he tried to start….but so far….he has had no takers…SteveLensmanHOF2014, FloraHOF2014, BryRogHOF2014…..it has possibilities….lol.
      2. Many times during 2017….I would see a comment from you….and it would be on a page….I had forgotten even existed…..those were some surreal moments….reading the page….and remembering….that yes…in fact…..I had written this page….lol.
      3. Those yearly pages….always seem to be attracting views….and the beauty is that now that we are dynamic….those pages get updated automatically too.
      4. Thanks for all the kind words….all the comments…..and all the feedback.
Congrats on your HOF status….hope your New Year was awesome.

      1. Hey Mr. Cogerson. I did in fact get a kick out of Phil using his HOF status in his name. It made me laugh.

        1. Thanks for your replies Bruce and SteinHOF – I am for the first time using my new HOF status, but in the future I may save it for special occasions. I would not want to appear to be showing off 🙂

          1. Hey Phil…..as I told Lupino….please use any name you want…..using your HOF for special occasions sounds like a perfect plan.

  2. Congratulations on another successful year. I always get a kick out of seeing myself in a Hall of Fame. Looking forward to reading lots of your new pages in 2018. Welcome to the Hall – box cox, Lupino, Phil Simmons and Pierre. Happy New Year.

    1. Hey Helakoski….always good to see another HOF arrive to give congrats to the new inductees. Glad you still enjoy being an UMR HOF. I am hoping 2018 is great year for everybody. Happy New Year.

  3. Weird story, at the nursing home I volunteer at I was telling a guy who uses the computer to look up who has died recently and people who have 1 line in a Honeymooner’s eposode that there was a person who had a hit song in 1932 who was stillalive. That was Rose Marie when she was a kid. I come home and she passed away. The source of this stat on her was from Joel Whitburn’s Pop Memories book which covers chart hits and supposed chart hits from 1890 – 1954. That book has been heavily criticized by a guy who has tons of cylinders of early recordings. He also happens to have written the TV encyclopedia I use (Tim Brooks). Joel Whitburn publishes all the Billboard chart books along with books on Cash Box and Record World (former music chart magazines).

    1. Hey Dan.
      1. Thanks for sharing that “weird story”.
      2. That is a sad case of “theory of repetition” …in that rule…..as soon as you say something…..then it shows up again…..like you mention a song you like….and then the next song you hear on the radio is that song. In this case it was Rose Marie.
      3. A case of “theory of repetition”…..is the fact that I was just looking at my one and only Whitburn book….Top 40 Hits……as I was thinking of doing an Elvis page on his “SONGS”…..I know I am shocked too….lol.
      4. As for Rose Marie…..I have to admit….I was shocked she was still alive….even more shocked when I saw that she was a very active Twitter person….RIP Rose Marie.
      5. Interesting Rose Marie trivia from her childhood days.
      Good stuff.

  4. Hey Bruce,
do you mind if I keep it simple? I may change my mind when it comes to using my new political influence in Cogerson Country by using my full title, namely in that special part known as Request County. Otherwise, I’d rather stay Lupino…but thanks for sharing the story of Stein- really funny 😉

    1. Hey Lupino…..you can use any name you want…..I was just explaining Stein’s interesting take on being selected to last year’s class. In the United States….once a person gets into a Hall of Fame…..they usually add HOF at the end of their autograph…..supposedly it makes the signature worth more. Not sure being in the UMR Hall of Fame will increase the value of your autograph…but you never know…..lol.

  5. Ok, so I am not used to drinking and I had a little too much last night I admit…but I guess I’m sober now. Still, it looks as if I made my first entry into ANY Hall of Fame here @ UMR…What a way to start the new year 😉

Happy New Year to all fellow supporters/fans of this great place on the internet, where all our different backgrounds, languages, cultural upbringings etc are so unimportant for our shared love of movies overcomes all those differences.

And Bruce, thanks for giving me my very own Sally Field moment here…that’s what you get when you officially make someone- or me, to be precise- “The Voice from Germany” lol!

    1. Your Hall of Fame recognition is well deserved. bob cox, Phil Simmons and Pierre are deserving as well, but you have in my mind brought the most to the forum part of this website. I do not comment often but I do read the comments often, your vast movie knowledge is a welcome addition. Every Hall of Fame ceremony leaves the biggest star for the last presentation, and you would be the grand finale in this year’s presentation.

      1. Hey In The Shadows…..great comment on Lupino……I agree with you…..bob, Phil and Pierre are all very deserving….but for this class Lupino was our Peyton Manning, Cal Ripken, Pele, Wayne Gretzky of this HoF class.

P.S. If only you would come out of the shadows a little more……you could be a member too….then again would you show up for the ceremony? Or would you send an Indian to refuse the award? This was made very tongue in cheek…hopefully it comes across as “playful” and not mean spirited.

        1. Hello Bruce,

Thank you for the informations on this page and of course thank you for the nomination…..my first red carpet….!!!! Champagne!!!
And in the mean time i just can tell you that i come on your site several time a week but i dont comment all the time simply because so many informations to read
          My fav pages are Dietrich, Cooper, Gable an Lombard, Darnell and Power, in the classical pages and of course i am always running on the others like STARS WARS;
One of my favorite page is the story of the movie place TIGER, I really love that page and that story.
          So Bruce
Thank you and of course a very Happy New Year
          Pierre

          1. Hey Pierre.
            1. We have greatly appreciated your comments, views and feedback over the last two years.
            2. Congrats on your Hall of Fame status……it was well earned.
            3. I understand 100% about the comment box…the last 10 days I have had the luxury of not having to work….so I have been all over the comments….but in 8.5 hours….it is back to work…..and the time crunch begins again.
            4. Thanks for sharing your favorite pages….especially that you like our Tiger Theater page so much……WoC things that is the best page we have ever done….so it is good to hear others like it as wel..
            5. Hope your New Year was awesome.

      2. Dear In The Shadows,

I hardly know how to react to your statement- Thank you so very much for your kind words!

      3. Hello in The Shadows,
        You are perfectly right for Lupino, he is so knowledge in movie story and for me with an english so easy to read that i always read his comments with the greatest interest;

        Happy New Year
        Pierre

        1. Hey Pierre….I have been hoping we could get In The Shadows to become Out of the Shadows…..but so far no luck. Maybe your kind words will help nudge him out into the opening….lol.

    2. Hey Lupino…..like all greats….you can now put HoF behind your name….this is something Stein started last year……he has since added 2016 to his name……so he is apparently going to be going by SteinHoF2016……as in Stein…Hall of Famer….Class of 2016. You could be LupinoHoF2017….Lupino Hall of Famer Class of 2017. Stein is a funny guy.

Glad you enjoyed your Sally Field moment. Good point about the diverse backgrounds…and how we generally get along.

Congrats…..and thanks for all the feedback, visits, tally counts and comments…..they were all greatly appreciated.
