  1. great page. I wonder if any one will notice my death. only one matters. my risen Lord and Savior, Jesus The Christ. I pray he knows me and makes me clean.

    1. Of course you will be noticed….you are after all an UMR Hall of Famer. Thanks for checking out our mini tribute to Mr. Khan.

  2. Don’t recognize the name but I recognize the face. My first thought it was the coronavirus, but appears he had other issues. Rest in peace.

    1. Hey Taylor. I was in the same boat as you. I knew his face but did not know his name. Sad news! Rest In Peace.

  3. The only production of any kind in which I have seen Irrfan has been the US television series “In Treatment” top-starring Gabriel Byrne and Diane Wiest. It ran for 106 episodes showing 5 evenings per week from 2008 – 2010 initially and I watched all of them over here in 2014. Here’s what Wikipedia says about it-

“In Treatment is an American HBO drama, produced and developed by Rodrigo Garcia, about a psychotherapist 50-something Paul Weston, and his weekly sessions with patients, as well as those with his own therapist at the end of the week.”

Irrfan played Sunil Sanyal a patient of Paul Weston in 7 episodes which were first aired in 2010 and here’s how Wiki describes Sunil’s involvement:

“After his wife’s death, 52-year-old Sunil emigrated to the United States from Calcutta, to live with his son and daughter-in-law. He is deeply depressed over his wife’s death and angry at what he sees as his daughter-in-law’s insensitivity. Sunil talks to Paul even though psychotherapy is stigmatized in his culture.”

It will be seen that in these episodes Irrfan was a kind of ‘Al Leach in reverse”: Irrfan was just 43 at the time so like Brando in Godpop Irrfan played a character much older than his own real age in “In Treatment”. However like Marlon Irrfan acquitted himself well as an older man and I found him fascinating to watch – again as I did Brando! [Mark Wahlberg was one of the “In Treatment” executive producers.]

Also like The Great Mumbler Irrfan seems to have had a fine acting range because in 2004 he won an award for “Best performance by an actor in a villainous role”. The movie was the 2003 Indian film Hassil [like Godpop a crime drama]and as it ran for 161 minutes Irrfan obviously did well to sustain throughout an award-winning performance. [And continuing those Brando-type comparisons Godpop too had a mammoth running time of 175 minutes]. Clearly Irrfan is a great loss to the Hindi cinema and to filmaking generally

    1. Hey Bob. Good information on his television career. I did not include In Treatment in my massive tv show page. I like Gabriel Byrne, but I never got around to watching that show. Heck if I like Bryne so much, how come he does not have an UMR Page. Just re-watched Miller’s Crossing….my favorite Byrne movie. Interesting comparison between Khan, Brando and Grant. Good stuff. RIP

      1. HI BIG BOY: Thanks for the feedback. It was a very good idea of yours [as I think Flora has already said] to create this In Memoriam page as it gives us the opportunity to record on a central page our respects upon the passing of a personal idol/favourite or of just someone whose work we have enjoyed like Irrfan in my case.

I suppose it’s the academic in you but you do have a knack of aptly naming and describing your pages. For example you referred to Joel’s new page when you introduced it as containing sections of “part drivel” though as you usually try to avoid over-emotion in conveying your opinions you have become a master of the understatement. You will see that I have written to Bob Cox today to chastise him for his role in the matter.

I think that your being an academic you would immensely enjoy In Treatment and the beauty of it is that it can be easily fitted into one’s daily viewing schedule as each episode lasts just 22-30 mins though they always grip. Many good thespians as well as Iffran weigh in as very-interesting case studies for Gabriel’s Dr Weston and each has several episodes where he/she takes central stage as Weston’s patient.

For example Debra Winger is among those who surface as is John Mahoney [Frasier’s dad in THAT TV sitcom] and indeed Mahoney’s CEO Walter Barnett who is in 7 episodes could be a cautionary character for YOU as he is a workaholic and Weston tells him to slow down – “Walter is self-confident CEO with a history of panic attacks, who finds his life is becoming overwhelming.” [Wikipedia].

The show won several awards/noms including a Golden Globe for Gabe as Weston. A Gabriel Byrne page sounds a good idea. I can probably live with Joel posts for a while longer if I get the odd Irishman thrown at me!! Anyway take care and be safe.

        1. BRUCE:

You will see that in the 3rd para of my previous post I with a slip of the pen spelt Irrfan’s name wrong. I just missed the boat for correction when the button closed down on me so I’d be grateful if you would do the needful.

When paying our respects on this page it is doubly important that we are precise in our spelling of names though your site does have a good record in that respect. Apologies and thanks.

          BOB

  4. As the Work Horse indicates in his own post today Irrfan is mainly known for his work in the Hindi cinema and when his American and British films have been taken into account he has a massive overall filmography of 87 movies made between 1988 and this year. His final one was Angrezi Medium which was released in March this year.

According to Wikipedia his movies overall have grossed an ACTUAL 3.65 billion worldwide in US dollars most of it coming from Slumdog Millionaire and the blockbusters to which Bruce refers in his post

Irrfan made 2 videos in 2015 [Lego Dimensions and Lego Jurassic World] and appeared in 22 television productions between 1985 and 2016 and like his movies these TV projects seem to have been mostly Hindi ones.

Irrfan had been signed for a US film The Wicked Path which deals with the controversial US Gun Laws and in it he was to play -wait for it Work Horse! – Mr Norton a school principal. Two minutes ago as I write IMDB sadly removed his name from its cast list for the film.

Irrfan’s premature death at 53 is particularly sad when one considers how much he had to live for: a reported net fortune of $50 million [as at 2015] normally a massive sum for a thespian whose roots are not in what we regard as the mainstream cinema; and IMDB credits him with 32 acting awards and 28 noms. Undoubtedly therefore he richly deserves to be honored on this In Memoriam page and thanks to WH for setting the ball rolling. SEE ADDITIONAL TRIVIA in PART 2

    1. Hey Bob. Thanks for the additional information on Khan. All good facts to know. Sad that IMDb changed his movies so fast. In India this is big big news. Here, it got a few mentions, but it is already fading in the news circle.

  5. Rest in Peace Irrfan Khan. A very good actor. He appeared in some American blockbusters and a ton of movies in India. I just recently watched his little known Puzzle. A nice drama about two people from different cultures. Thoughts and prayers.
