I’ve seen only 6 Victor Mature movies but they are all in the top 15. enjoy your trip to Alaska.
Hey Flora…thanks for checking out our new Victor Mature page. Your 6 has me beat but not Steve…as he tops us both. 15 for him….6 for you and a lowly 4 for me. Once again….it is great to see your comment. You were missed!
Hey Flora….wow….pretty surprised your tally is only 6…..that has to be one of your worst tallies for a classic star like him. Still it is more than me……so congrats on that. Steve has our combined total easily beat….that is a real role reversal when it comes to our tally counts. The trip was cold and dark…but AWESOME. Thanks for the visit and the comment.
Hey Cogerson….you should delete this comment when you get home…as you had already commented back…..you should use your eyes.
Nice Mature page. I think you are right he looks like Stallone.
Thanks for the comment and the visit.
Victor Mature was another of dads favorites and we would watch a movie simply because he was in it, a larger than life hero. The Sylvester Stallone of his era and the two do somewhat resemble each other.
I’ve seen 15 of the 51 films listed, probably more but those are the ones I recognise. Favorites include Samson and Delilah, The Robe (a dull epic the sequel was better), Demetrius and the Gladiators, My Darling Clementine and Kiss of Death.
I saw Firepower at the cinema, directed by Michael Winner, I don’t think I’ve seen it since.
One Million BC is worth a look for beautiful Carole Landis playing a sexy cave girl, tragically she commited suicide a few years later aged 29.
No worldwide grosses for Samson and Delilah? It must have been huge, half a billion adjusted in the US/Canada alone. The critics laughed at his films but DeMille had the midas touch and gave the people what they wanted, spectacle.
Another top job Bruce. Vote Up!
Hey Steve…..good to know that Victor was one of your dad’s favorites. Seems our dad’s had similar tastes…..though I only remember a few times my talking about Mature.
15 is pretty good. My total is only 4……while Flora’s is 6……so our tallies are reversed…..as our combined total does not match your total.
DeMille was the Spielberg of his time…..so that massive total is not too surprising. Only 10 worldwide totals is disappointing, but he spent most of his career at Paramount. As always thanks for checking out our latest.
1 I warmly welcome this new page. Victor Mature physically was so huge & had such a great tough guy image that in my youth I was glued to his movies. However his size didn’t bother English actor Anthony Steel whose wife Anita Ekberg was to co-star in Zarak with Mature a notorious womaniser. Steel told reporters that if Vic bothered Anita he’s stand on a chair and hit him with a bottle. [Those Brits always were plucky!]
2 In the Peter Sellers film After the Fox Victor sent up his screen persona by playing a ham movie actor whose agent was forever devising gimmicks to maintain his career. It suits certain vested interests in the plot to arrange for the Mature character be given an acting award and later his agent joins him on a beach to say that he has devised a new gimmick and Mature replies “I’ve already got a new gimmick, it’s called acting!” and walks away chortling and feeling pleased with himself.
3. He had a good sense of humour in real life too. When he retired from the screen he opened a used car business and he told an interviewer how he exploited his former fame. “A couple of times a year I put on the wig and fit the false teeth and mosey down to the showrooms and grin at the customers. The off-chance of seeing me there keeps them coming all the year round!”
4 He was probably most famous for Samson in the DeMille movie and in her autobiography his Delilah Hedy Lamarr [surprisingly omitted from the co-star links column] told of how she was going through a rocky period with her husband and on one occasion fled into a nearby red light district to escape from him. She claims that she had to hide out in one of the business establishments there for such a long time that she felt compelled to work for her keep!
NB Victor’s Chief Crazy Horse was called Valley of Fury over here and was released on a double bill with Lady Godiva of Coventry starring Maureen O’Hara and Rock Hudson’s mentor George Nader
Hey Bob…..glad you liked this page. Seems the call for a Victor Mature page was getting loud…..so we finally decided to give him his UMR page.
Great stories on Mature. Your story on After the Fox now has me motivated to watch that one. If and when I do a part 2 to my Who Is The Next Brando page…..I will be sure to include the Stallone/Mature match.
As always thanks for sharing your Mature movie knowledge.
Hi Bruce,
Victor Mature has long been one of my favorite actors. He was never evaluated at his full potential; he is the quintessential every man. My first exposure to Mr Mature was Kiss of Death and it remains one of the most balanced performances of a criminal turned family man with his staunch loyalty slowly going into the right direction over the course of his rehabilitation. From this performance we are equally exposed, without direct reference, how a man may veer from society because of his equally loyal relationship with his wayward father.
Great work as usual.
Marcel
Hey Marcel…..glad you enjoyed this Victor Mature page. Great comment on Mature and mini review on Kiss of Death. Somehow I have not seen that version of Kiss of Death…..I know hiding my face in shame. I have seen the Nicolas Cage version….lol. Thanks for the kind words and the visit….sorry there were not more worldwide grosses but I blame Paramount.
