Drivel part: Has there every been a good video game movie? Well…we are sure headed into 2016, video game movie lovers had high expectations for Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed. Just How Bad Have Video Game Movies Been? Check Out These Stats
- Of the 40 movies listed in the previous table…none have been nominated for a single Oscar® in any category. That is 0 for 40.
2. The average critic/audience rating for these 40 movies is 37.12%……that is 5% below an average Adam Sandler movie. Sandler has the lowest average critic/rating in our database.
3. Not a single one of the 40 movies listed in the previous table have a critic/audience rating above 60%. 60% is what RottenTomatoes.com considers to be a good/”fresh” movie. That is 0 for 40 again.
4. Only three of the movies listed in the previous table are above the average UMR score of 40.00. That is 3 for 40 or 7.5%….which means 92.5% are below an average UMR score.
5. Three of 40 video game movies in the previous table have a UMR score under 10.00. Those 3 movies are the 7th, 6th and 1st worst rated movies in my 30,000 plus movie database.
6. Alone In The Dark (2005) is now the lowest rated movie in our database. That movie knocked 2014’s Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas out of the bottom spot in our rankings.

This might be the worst collection of movies you have put together. Still a fun page to view.
Hey Helakoski ….. you are probably right….this is the worst collection of movies of any page on our close to 500 page website. Glad you still found it fun. Thanks for stopping by.
Another interest topic Bruce which begs the question why is it so hard to make a really good movie based on a video game? Movies based on comic books have fared better and have been huge successes. The big difference here is that comic books will be read and re-read by comic book fans over the years, while old computer games rarely get played again, I might be wrong I’m not a gamer.
What does this mean for game movies? That they become dated really quickly? Do gamers still play Prince of Persia or Doom? Street Fighter? If they can make great movies out of the flimsiest of stories why not great movies based on video games?
I’ve seen 29 of the 40 films here and I own 20 of them on DVD and Blu-ray, he shamefully admitted.
Favorites include the two Lara Croft movies, all the Resident Evils including the 2 CG animations and Final Fantasy The Spirits Within (the first digitally projected movie I saw at the cinema, 15 years ago! )
Good to see Jolie (when she was red hot) sitting on top of the UMR chart, not sure Mortal Kombat should be that high up. I know it was a big hit on release but it hasn’t worn well)
The critics savaged latest game to movie Assassin’s Creed, the filmmakers had an entire year to make a really good movie and… they just couldn’t do it.
Game Over! Vote Up!
Hey Steve
1. Thanks for the comment.
2. You might be right …..maybe it is the “freshness factor”…though two of the movies this year are still popular….Assassin’s Creed and Warcraft…and both got destroyed by critics and audience….though I guess the jury is still when it comes to Assassin’s Creed.
3. Tally counts….you 29 and me 23. Movies owned 20 for you and maybe 5 for me….though I have noticed my Resident Evil movies have disappeared as the boys move out of the house.
4. I agree with you about Final Fantasy….even 15 years later and I still find it visually stunning.
5. Mortal Kombat is so high because (a) it made a ton of money and (b)
there are so many bad movies on the list.
🙂
Absolutely! They have all been terrible.
Hey Jeff….I agree 100% with you. Thanks for checking out our latest page.
Your stats do not show much good news for this movies. I actually liked a few of the Resident Evil movies. I count 5 2016 movies versus the 4 you mentioned. The bottom is some pretty horrible movies.
Hey Stein…..thanks for the heads up. I fixed that before going to work. I agree the bottom movies are horrible. Three of them are in the bottom 10 of all the movies in my database. I agree about a couple of the Resident Evil movies.
First off, Jean Claude was robbed of an oscar for best actor in Street Fighter as Guile. Second, Mortal Kombat is actually pretty decent regardless of critical review. Bryan and I used to put the VHS on of the final scene and act out the fight. Lots of good memories, even if it’s not critically acclaimed.
Hey Scotty…..you are so right ……JCVD was robbed. What was the Academy thinking? I also have fond memories of that movie and you two. Plus Fire and Ice…..which is something we all acted out. Though that movie always got your mom mad….. because she did not think it appropriate for you young punks. You two used to watch Double Dragon all the time too. Thanks for the comment and visit.
