Want to know the best Vincente Minnelli movies? How about the worst Vincente Minnelli movies? Curious about Vincente Minnelli box office grosses or which Vincente Minnelli movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Vincente Minnelli movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.
Vincente Minnelli (1903-1986) was an Oscar® winning American film director. He gained famed for directing such classic movie musicals as Meet Me in St. Louis, Gigi, The Band Wagon, and An American in Paris. His IMDb page shows 38 directing credits from 1925 to 1957. This page will only be taking a look at 38 of his movies. Movies will be ranked from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.
Drivel part of the page: (1) This UMR movie page comes from a request from Flora. (2) Recently Steve Lensman did a You Tube on Vincente Minnelli’s Top 20 Movies…lots of great movie posters there. (3) We only had to research 4 of the 38 movies….because we already had 34 of his movies in our database. (4) Collateral Damage: Only one of those 34 movies needed to have a box office adjustment….1949’s Madame Bovary…which saw that movie drop from the ranks of being a $100 million box office hit.

He is one of my favorites. Overall I have seen 26 of his movies. I never would have guessed I had seen that many of his movies. Loved the Gene Kelly and Judy Garland movies. I remember laughing often while watching The Long, Long Trailer. Thanks for doing another page.
🙂
26 films.
I believe Canada is going to have two people on the podium.
I don’t think anyone will beat Flora’s tally. I could only manage 15 films out of the 38 listed.
I’ve seen most of Minnelli’s musicals, two of them are big favorites of mine – The Band Wagon and An American in Paris. Other favorites include – Meet Me in St. Louis, The Pirate, Gigi and Kismet.
Not a huge fan of Brigadoon or Lust for Life, Kirk Douglas did a great job as Van Gogh, but his constant whining and whimpering got on my nerves I just wanted to reach into the screen and slap him hard.
Top rated films I’ve missed include – The Clock, Home from the Hill or Some Came Running (I may have seen them I just can’t remember)
Btw Gigi is rated a lot higher on my Minnelli video, here it didn’t even make the top 20. Some websites cite it as Minnelli’s masterpiece.
Good work as always Bruce and thanks for the link, much appreciated. Voted Up!
Hey Steve.
1. I think you are right….but my moms got close. Seems she is a big musical fan as well.
Current Tally Count…

3. Brigadoon was the most recent one that I have seen….it had it’s moments.
4. Gigi’s 6.9 IMDb rating killed in my ranking system…..and it was only slightly higher at RottenTomatoes.
5. Hope the link generates so traffic your way.
RE: GIGI:
That is my favourite Louis Jourdan film.
I have said that Frank Sinatra is my favourite singer of all time, and it is true.
But Louis Jourdan had the ability to talk and sing going in and out in a way that is natural.
And that song where he sings the tiyle song is – quite frankly – my single favourite recording of all time.
It is the most beautiful, romantic and sexy recording I have ever heard.
And that is why I was so upset when he died in his 90s.
I have the recording on a tape – yes tape of BRoadway movies and Broadways songs.
I listen to it odften.
1 As I’ve already told Laurent Louis Jourdan is one of my all-time favourite French actors though he to a large extent became ‘Hollywoodized’
2 He could do villains as well as good guys and musicals.
3 He was in fact a beautiful man without being in any way ‘sissy’ I always thought that when he was younger he would have made a great Dorrain Gray
4 His own favourite actor was Marlon Brando for whom he expressed public admiration.
BOBBY
Talking of Louis Jourdan, I thought was superb as Count Dracula in a highly regarded BBC production of the 70s.
Agreed Steve.
Hey Steve…never even heard of Jourdan as Dracula…..I will have to check that one out.
Yes. He was often cast as a french lover and he did the role well:
But he was a dynamic actor who could do drama as well.
Just look at the episode of Columbo.
🙂
Hey Bob….he had a pretty good career. The highlight had to be………drumroll…..Swamp Thing…lol. Musicals, Bond movies, comic book movies….plus he liked Brando….hey maybe he needs a UMR page.
GIGI IS INDEED HIS MASTERPIECE.
Hey Flora….GigI was 9 for 9 in Oscar noms and Oscar wins….including a Best Picture win. Hard to argue that it is NOT his masterpiece.
I’ve seen 17 of Vincente Minelli’s listed films, including Flora’s favorite, The Cobweb. J/K!
Hooray, Lawrence!
17 may indeed get you somewhere on the podium, although I’ve beat you with 38.
WE will have to see where Bruce falls…..
WEll, regarding The Cobweb – now that I have done a reworking of it, it will always hold a special place in my heart.
Hey Larry….thanks for the tally count. 17 probably gets you on the medal stand.

There really is no film of this director that I hate.
I have favourites.
Obviously I love musicals.
But he do a lot of dramas.
Cabin in the sky was an early all black cast.
I would like to direct your attention to a low ranking film he did called The Cobweb.
It is another version of “Spellbound” in that it takes place in a Sanitarium and is goofy because everything focuses on the drapes.
Recently, TCM aired a day of Richard Widmark movies during which time I did not intend to watch it again, but could not help myself.
As a person who majored in Psychology, I tend to see psychological films on the basis of a potential profession of mine.
Following some discussion in a general discussions thread on Richard widmark movies whose existence is the reason why I did not create my own Widmark thread as one already existed;
I rewrote The Cobweb in the 20th CEntury Vole Thread based upon CaveGirl’s suggested title of The Suicidal Drapist – a reference to the character played by John Kerr.
It is entitled:
RICHARD WIDMARK’S THW COBWEB REMAKE: THE SUICIDAL DRAPIST.
I was under the name of ColumboFan when I wrote it.
Since the Vole thread is popular, you have to go far back to find it.
Hey Flora.
1. I am glad you found “your” requested Vincente Minnelli page.
2. Impressive that you have seen all of his Top 25….that might be a first when it comes to a classic page that is not one of our all-time favorites.
3. Tally count….33 is impressive. Probably the winner…..let’s see I am at….counting….12…a little more than I thought it would be….I have seen….40% of the Top 25.

5. Thanks as always for sharing your movie knowledge
Thanks for my requested page on this fabulous multifactited director, father of Liza, husband of Judy.
I amm not surer how this page was not already done or why I was the only person who had requested it.
Liza is a great name. That song is beautiful.
I am of course always talking about my favourite dynasties.
Garland/Minelli/Luft – that is another dynasty.
I love that this requested page came around the same time as Steve’s beautiful video.
As I said before, I have seen all of these top 20 films in the video.
I will now close this comment, and focus on the viewings/rankings.
Hey Flora….Steve has been on a roll…these last few weeks….producing a new video about one every 1.5 days.
