  1. As Bruce says above Walter Hill has had multi-function involvement with film-making as director/assistant director/producer/assistant producer/writer and I have seen 7 movies in which he performs one or more of these functions:

    The Drowning Pool-screenplay
    48 Hours-director
    Alien 1979-producer
    Aliens 1986-executive producer/story
    Alien 3-producer/screenplay
    Alien Resurrection-producer
    Last Man Standing-director/producer/screenplay

    Walter has also had roles in 2 movies: Baby Driver[voice] and Messiah of Evil [stabbing victim in prologue].

    EXTRA TRIVIA: 1996’s Last Man Standing starring Bruce Willis with which of all the 7 that I have listed Walter seems to have had the most comprehensive involvement is a remake of the legendary Akira Kurosawa’s 1961 Yojimbo starring the great Toshiro Mifune.

    That version is considered a ‘foreign’ classic and IMDB gives it an 82% rating in contrast to the poor 49% that The Work Horse awards above to Last Man Standing. Nevertheless I was interested in just the Bruce Willis version and THAT was because Brucie was in it. Kurosawa made as well the classic 1954 Seven Samurai also starring Mifune.

    I should add that IMDB is more generous than our own Work Horse as it gives Last Man Standing a slightly better than “good” 64% with which I concur as whilst no classic it was a solid action movie with Willis in fine form. [sorry Work Horse but I am sure that if Hirsch were around he would agree with YOU !]

    1. Hey Bob. Thanks for the thoughts on Walter Hill. He might be one of the first directors, besides Spielberg that I came to know. I remember connecting the dots between his The Warriors and his 48 Hours. 48 Hours was one of the first VHS tapes I wore out. Tally count: Dan 20, Cogerson 15 and you 7….though I suspect Dan has seen all the Alien movies as well. I decided to only include his directed movie. He was a late addition into our third book….which is now finished. I will have to go back and see where Last Man Standing sits now. That was one of the first movies researched on this movie ranking path. A lot could have changed over the last 10 years….different reviews and a slight difference in how we do our calculation….so maybe it is higher than the 49% it currently sits at. I actually saw that one in theaters….and thought it was a good action flick. Good stuff as always.

      1. HI BRUCE: Thanks for the feedback and additional background information. I think that we are agreed that Willis’ Last Man Standing is worthy of being called an OK action movie/thriller.

        Maybe the problem with some critics is that for them everything must be a ‘classic’ and they cannot accept the mass appeal of movies that are not particularly special artistically but just a good, well-made all-round solid entertainment product especially if a highly-charismatic figure like The Duke of Mr Gimme More is at the centre of the movie.

        Anyway I am relieved that you and I are in broad agreement: it would be ironic if we got into a “Mexican Standoff” in which I insisted that a Willis movie was well-worth watching but you bad-mouthed it!

        Glad to hear the 3rd book is now finished; naturally I look forward to buying my own copy of it. It will sit well on my shelf as a useful reference source alongside your first two: Top 50 Movie Stars and Ranking Today’s Movie Stars – with only the 1983 Rating the Movie Stars looking the poor relation!!! And by the way the Audie Murphy bookthat you kindly sent me some time ago remains a useful guide for me when I am doing my private exercises relating to movies.

        1. Hey Bob. The last ten years has been good to Last Man Standing….it’s IMDb score has gone from a 6.1 to a 6.4….and it’s combined Rotten Tomato score has moved up as well…..it moved up 5%……but is still under the “Good” line….but 54% is a lot better than 49%. In this table it was enough to move Last Man Standing to 15th place versus the original 17th place. As for the book….it is complete….it is going through a final edit for errors…and then we are good to go……this one is only 238 pages…..as we were trying to get the price under $10 bucks….mission accomplished as it is only going to be $8.99. Glad you have enjoyed the Audie book. Good stuff as always.

    1. Hey Dan. Thanks for checking out our Walter Hill page. He was the man back in the 1980s. I was a big fan of his 48 Hours, Extreme Prejudice, Streets of Fire, Southern Comfort, Red Heat and The Long Riders. Add in his The Warriors made in 1979…what a run of great action movies. I have always been surprised that his career pretty much stalled after that decade. Only 5 movies in the last quarter of a century. Was working with Bruce Willis on 1996’s Last Man Standing that bad?…lol. I have seen 15 of the 21 movies…so I trail you by 5 movies. Good stuff as always.
