My Personal Quick Take on Wes Anderson Movies

1.  I actually saw Bottle Rocket in the theater….one of the very few people that can make that claim.  It played at the Naro Expanded theater in Norfolk, Virginia.  I loved the movie and it made me a Wes Anderson fan.  I knew that two brothers were in the movie….I thought they were the ones playing Anthony and Bob Mapplethorpe…not sure how long it took for me to realize that Dignan(Owen Wilson) and Anthony(Luke Wilson) were the brothers.

2.  I thought Rushmore was a very quirky movie…but I loved the performances by Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman.

3.  The Royal Tenenbaums is my favorite Wes Anderson movie.  Great performances everywhere in the film….but the greatest is Gene Hackman’s performance.  How Hackman did not get an Oscar nomination is still a mystery to me.

4.  I saw The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou in theaters….it was not a fun experience at all….my second viewing did not change my opinion.

5. My least favorite Anderson movie is The Darjeeling Limited.  I saw it one time and I will probably never revisit it.

6.  The Fantastic Mr. Fox is the one Anderson movie that I can enjoy with my younger kids…and they grab it off the DVD shelf on a pretty regular basis.

7. Moonrise Kingdom is my 2nd favorite Anderson movie.  I love the performance Anderson got out of Bruce Willis…I was hoping it would get Bruce a Supporting Actor nomination.  Edward Norton, Bill Murray, and Frances McDormand all shine in their roles as well.

8.  The Grand Budapest Hotel… I thought this was a good movie…but would not crack my Top 3 Wes Anderson movies.

UMR Snub (Too High or Too Low): The Grand Budapest Hotel, have not seen but I know the ones I have seen are better.
    Guilty Pleasure: Bottle Rocket
Have not even heard of Isle of Dogs…its listed twice.

  2. His movies keep getting better. From Bottle Rocket to Grand Budapest. I think he will win a Oscar for directing one of these days. Go see Budapest it is awesome funny with a great performance by Fiennes and Norton.

    1. Hey Mike….thanks for the comment. I have to admit I think he stumbled with Life Aquatic and Darjeeling Express….but he has been on a roll in his last three movies. I agree he will be getting an Oscar at some point in his career.

  3. Nice work Bruce. Definitely a quirky director. Looking at your charts I’ve only seen 4 of his films – Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums, Steve Zissou and Fantastic Mr. Fox. I will eventually get round to watching Moonrise Kingdom and Budapest Hotel. I bought Steve Zissou on DVD, something about it that clicked with me, it’s weirdness probably. Hmm Owen Wilson and Bill Murray in 7 of his films, were they both in Mr. Fox? Have to watch that again.

    1. Hey Steve….I am disappointed you have not seen Moonrise Kingdom…that was one of the best reviewed movies of the year. As for Fantastic Mr. Fox…..Bill Murray provided the voice for Badger Fox’s lawyer while Owen Wilson provided the voice Coach Skip who is probably a ferret.

    1. Hey Jared…..thanks for stopping by…sorry you are not much of a Anderson fan…but glad you like my website.

  4. Moonrise Kingdom has to be the top one. Granted 2nd is pretty good too. Other than Moonrise, I find many of his movies to be hit and miss with me. I did not like Bottle Rocket at all, I kept falling asleep. Rushmore is a classic.

    1. Hey Scout Master….thanks for the visit….I really enjoyed your performance in Moonrise Kingdom….hope you hold on to 2nd place….but Grand Budapest Hotel is coming on fast.
