  1. Welcome back Wayne. Thanks for the kind words about the progress on our website. We have added lots of features over the last 5 years….hopefully making the website even better. Our yearly pages have become the most popular pages on the website…..and they seem to get even more popular with each passing year.

As for Where Eagles Dare…..a long time ago we had to decide whether to put older movies in the year they were made or the year they were released. It seemed a lot easier to list the movie with the year it was released…..as most movies fall into that category….which is why we have Where Eagles Dare in 1968 (IMDb is our main source for the year).

All of our box office calculations pre1980 use rental numbers….we have done lots of researched and discovered that the multiplier used to get grosses is a constantly changing number. See the following page for a in depth explanation . https://www.ultimatemovierankings.com/sorry-i-was-so-wrong/

Hopefully we will hear again from you before 2025…lol. Good stuff.

    1. Hi Bruce, Thanks for the clarification on the rental percentages. That makes sense that they might change every year or so, and I’m guilty of not really thinking that far into it. During the seventies Variety suggested on numerous occasions that you could multiply the rental approx. 2.5.

In the case of The Eiger Sanction, Variety reported rentals of $7,155,000. With Breakout they reported rentals of $7,500,000. In the media stoked boxoffice battle of the tough guys: Bronson vs. Eastwood, 1975 marked Bronson’s high-water mark, finally passing Eastwood’s ranking in Quigley Publication’s highly regarded movie star ratings. Breakout was issued day and date to Eiger, with Bronson far out-gunning in theatre counts (800widest opening to date–300), wherever Eiger opened, Breakout was there in numbers. According to the rentals, Bronson eked out a victory. Ultimately, Eastwood’s future proved far more sustainable than Bronson’s.

Regarding Where Eagles Dare, IMDB does list it as a 1968 release and I agree release date is the date to regard. Of coarse WED was released in the last two weeks of ’68 in Japan alone.
The North American release as the rest of the world was 1969. The box office numbers you’re reporting are North American figures.

I’m a big Eastwood fan from way back and these placements jumped out at me. I do very much appreciate all that you’ve done and thank you for your quick response.

  2. I love this site. I first stumbled across it, I believe, about 5 years ago. We corresponded briefly at the time, but alas, life took me in other directions. You have been busy. The degree you’ve expanded takes my breath away. The addition of annual gross domestic film earnings is impressive, and long overdue for someone to tackle this massive under-taking.

One note, if I might: Where Eagles Dare was released in the U.S. in 1969, on Wed. March 19th at a couple of theatres. Expanding wide, for the time, across North America on Wed. March 26, 1969. Currently it’s listed in your yearly review 1968.

Your calculations of gross US boxoffice appears solid in most cases, though I’ve only browsed the ’70’s at this point, a number of them struck me as being influenced by more than merely reported rentals. Especially a few films from 1975: Breakout, The Eiger Sanction, etc.

Anyway, Thanks for all you’ve done with your site. It’s a great enjoyment! I look forward to diving in deeper.
    Wayne
