Want to know the best William Hurt movies? How about the worst William Hurt movies? Curious about William Hurt box office grosses or which William Hurt movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which William Hurt movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.
William Hurt (1950-2022) was an Oscar®-winning actor. His IMDb page shows 106 acting credits from 1977 to 2022. This page will rank William Hurt movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, shorts, cameos and movies that were not released in theaters were not included in the rankings. Drivel part. I decided to do this page after reading Phil’s comment on our 1980s decade that said “the only major movie star from the 1980s that does not have a UMR page is William Hurt”…..well….no more. As we now have a William Hurt page.

*** “I am deaf. There are millions of deaf people like me who face discrimination and being misunderstood on a daily basis. Recent media reports have circulated that Donald Trump allegedly referred to me as ‘retarded’. The term is abhorrent and should never be used.”’
[Marlee Matlin Oscar winning actress of Children of a Lesser God.]
In the early 1980s William Hurt looked to be well on his way to being the “next big thing” in movies as he was in a run of critically acclaimed “sophisticated” movies that earned him 3 consecutive Oscar noms [out of which he had one win] and he therefore just missed out on equalling Brando’s record of four consecutive Academy Award noms.
Those acclaimed films include Alerted States; Body heat; Kiss of the Spider Woman; Children of a Lesser God; Broadcast News and The Accidental Tourist. His average Cogerson review rating for the 6 is a high 80%. Your own is approx 76.6% and indeed I think all 6 are in your top 12.
However mega stardom for William was not to be as his huge critical success was not sufficiently matched at the box office which although at first overall respectable was not vertiginous: for the 6 movies mentioned above his adjusted overall Cogerson US gross is around $490 million [average per movie of approx $80 million].
In terms of stardom what we might call the “William Hurt era” ended with 1991’s The Doctor [a big favourite of mine] with William in the title role and which again according to WH’s tables had a respectable adjusted US gross of around $80 million and a good 72% review rating – identical to your own in fact. After that although Hurt continued to give fine performances they were largely in supporting roles or/and flops of one kind or another.
Hi
I remember going to see Body Heat in the early 80’s. I thought it was a terrific film, arguably one of his best. He really was big in the 80’s, although like a lot of 80’s movies, they’ve dated. Children of Lesser God was okay, Broadcast News was far better.
The Big Chill was good but with so many 30 something shows on T.V, it is now a bit cliched.
He seemed to disappear in the early 90’s and then re-emerged as a supporting player, which he seemed to be happy with. Let’s face it, not everybody wants to be a superstar.
A decent actor can have a good career as a supporting role without having the ups and downs of a big box office star.
I particularly liked him in Michael. I last seen him in the series Damages and I’m sure he’ll reappear in something else soon.
1980 was the first year I did my ten best pictures of the year. Altered States was my #1 movie of the year. Story about that. In New York there was a sneak preview of the film at the Ziegfeld theater, a giant screen which recently closed. Actually it was the last screen in New York that sat over a 1000 people. It was the Christmas season and I went to the box office to buy me a ticket and they gave it to me and said Merry Christmas. It was free. Earlier in the year while walking in front of the now demolished (1987) RKO Warner/Cinerama (don’t remember which it was in 80) they gave me a free ticket for the sneak preview of The Blues Brothers but I digress. Mr. Hurt was #74 all time on the 2016 Oracle of Bacon top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list (he stayed in the same position on the March 2017 list). Body Heat was my #2 film of 1981 and Race was my #1 of last year. I don’t remember where they ranked but The Accidental Tourist and Captain America alsom made my top 10 of their respective years.
Hey Dan
1. Now that sounds like a wonderful Christmas Story.
2. Are you still a huge fan of Altered States or have the years diminished it’s greatness?
3. Maybe those 1000 seat theaters will make a comeback.
4. Wow only 3 of the Oracle Top 10….I figured he would have more connections when I read he was Top 100 Oracle person.
5. 36 Oscar winners…a decent amount…though I guess I would have thought it would have been more since his movies are generally critic friendly.
6. As always thanks for sharing this information. 🙂
Haven’t seen Altered States since it debuted on television say 1985ish.
I have seen only 4 of his films:
The Big Chill
Body Heat
The Accidental Tourist
Dark City
My favourite is The Big Chill.
Hey Flora….thanks for checking out one of our current pages. I would say 3 of the 4 that you have seen are awesome movies. Dark City is one of the best sci-if movies in the last 25 years, Body Heat is a throwback movie to the days of film noir and The Big Chill has an awesome cast. Glad to see that is your favorite. Thanks again for the feedback.
