Possibly Interesting Facts About Winona Ryder
1. Winona Laura Horowitz was born in Winona, Minnesota in 1971. Her stage name derives from Mitch Ryder, a soul and rock singer of whom her father was a fan.
2. Winona Ryder’s real hair color is blonde but when she made her first major film Lucas (1986), her hair color was dyed black. She was told to keep it that color and with the exception of Edward Scissorhands (1990), it has stayed that color since.
3. Winona Ryder dedicated the film Little Women (1994) to Polly Klaas, a young girl from her hometown of Petaluma, California, who was kidnapped and brutally murdered. She offered a $200,000 reward for anyone with information on the subject and remains a strong supporter of the Polly Klaas Foundation.
4. Winona Ryder says Sarah Miles’ performance in Ryan’s Daughter (1970) inspired her to become a professional actress.
5. Winona Ryder is only six years older than her Star Trek (2009) co-star Zachary Quinto, who plays her son in the movie. She was cast as Spock’s mother Amanda because the opening scene originally featured her giving birth to Spock. However, the scene was deleted and replaced with a more action-packed scene. Incidentally, Captain James T. Kirk’s mother in the movie is named Winona.

2/My general comment on Winona are posted below.
Hi Bob, thanks for the review, generous rating and trivia, always appreciated.
Happy you liked the posters and stills.
I had completed this video a couple of weeks ago but luckily by the time I was ready to upload it Bruce had a page ready for Winona. Next weeks videos are all on the UMR index page.
The Age of Innocence made the top 10 on my video but not the top 5, the highest rating I could find for it was 8, most of the scores were between 7 and 8. Bruce’s rating is the highest I’ve seen for that movie. Rotten Tomatoes rating average was 7.38 from 55 reviews.
Two films scored 10 out of 10 from my sources – Little Women and Edward Scissorhands. Two scored 9 out of 10 – Star Trek and Beetlejuice.
Star Trek and Black Swan are tied for no.1 at IMDB, Star Trek tops at Rotten Tomatoes with Heathers at no.2
Winona on The Godfather: Part III – “I was devastated because I love the Godfather movies so much. What happened was I’d done Mermaids and we were shooting for spring in the coldest winter in Boston’s history, and I got an upper respiratory infection. The day I wrapped I had to get on a plane to Italy. I actually passed out in the costume-fitting. I was just exhausted, and the next thing I knew I was at home with my parents. The film’s insurance people said I needed to be in bed for a few weeks. I was heartbroken, but at the same time I was so sick it was a relief. And Al (Pacino) and Francis (Ford Coppola) and Diane (Keaton) all called me and were really nice, which meant a lot. I felt bad in a way because they were so mean to Sofia (Coppola), who’s always been so nice to me.”
Winona on Star Trek – “I really don’t have much more than a cameo. I was kind of thinking I’d be like Marlon Brando in Superman. Not that I’d ever compare myself to Brando!”
Hey Steve…I have watched your Winona Ryder video….I will comment on it, and attach it here when I get back home. I see Dracula is the movie you were talking about. It did reach #2 on the overall rankings. Good quotes….I especially liked hearing about her take on The Godfather Part 3. Good stuff.
HI STEVE:
Thanks for the feedback. Always nice waiting for.
Interesting story about Winona and Godpop 3. As I’ve said before I am not a big franchise man because I think sequels ultimately start tearing the a** out of a success story. Rocky 26 Part 80: Last Blood. For heavens sake! It’s as if many movie series have become classrom arithmetic presentations [maybe that’s why WH likes them] rather than artistic
If The Great Mumbler has been in Godpop 3 I might have watched it but no chance of that because as one of his agents said “HE is a man for just ORIGINALS.”
I have read critics – even seasoned professionals:not pretend ones like Hirsch- complaining that the plot was so obscure that they couldn’t fathom it. I shall never know because I called the Corleone franchise a day afer Godpop 2.
Keep safe and continue to enjoy your weekend and in the meantime I will look forward to your next week’s offerings.

Hey Dan. As always, thanks for putting this information together. Keanu Reeves gets the “most frequent Oracle co-star title. I actually really enjoyed their little-seen Wedding Destination. A nice romantic comedy. As Reeves would say….”WOOOOOW” 37 Oscar winning co-stars is pretty good. I would have never guessed she appeared with Vanessa Redgrave in three movies together. Vanessa has almost gotten an UMR page so many times….one day she be the UMR bride and not just a bridesmaid. Good information as always.
Hi Bruce, guess what my next video upload was going to be? I mean what are the odds?
How often does this happen amigo?
At least Bob doesn’t have to start moving posts over. 😉
Okay I’ve seen… 15 of the 42 films on the chart. Favorites are – Mary Shelley’s Dracula, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Star Trek, Alien Resurrection, Frankenweenie and A Scanner Darkly.
Looking at the box office, the Star Trek reboot was a big hit and deservedly so. I hope they make another one.
Looking at my video chart, we have different no.1s. and my no.4 didn’t make your top 10.
Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!
Hey Steve great minds thinking alike. I will not be able to share her video her for a few days, but I have left a reminder for me to do that. Whatever we can to do, to make things easier for Bob, I am all for…lol. Tally count…15 for you, at least 6 for Bob and….counting…..30 for me…or 72%. I have seen all of your favorites….right there with you on Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Star Trek and Frankenweenie. I like A Scanner Darkly but it still confuses me after two viewings…but it visually impressive. Hmmm…your number did not make my Top 10….that must be Mermaids or Reality Bites….or maybe even my favorite Ryder movie Heathers. I will check out your video on Friday.
3/On top of her film career Winona has been in 12 TV productions from 1994 until the present appearing this year for example in 6 episodes of The Plot against America – that sound good; must put it on the ‘To Watch’ list! Since 2016 until the present she has been in 25 episodes of the horror fantasy series Stranger Things as character Joyce Byers and there are a further 8 episodes to come between now and 2021. Winona heads the overall published cast lists that I have seen for the total of 33 episodes
4/She also featured between 1989 and 2012 in 6 musical videos with important recording artists such as Cher and Annie Lennox.
5/Although Winona Ryder cannot be considered among the female mega stars of the modern cinema [getting no Cogerson love in for example his book or his on-site 25 female legends 1950-2010] she must nevertheless be considered a professional success as IMDB credits her with 20 acting awards and 50 noms; and Celebrity Net Worth last year assessed her net worth as $18 million which the site says she accumulated with “her fame and work as an actress”.
6/I can find no new material in the pipeline for Winona beyond the 8 further episodes of Stranger Things mentioned in my item 3. Anyway as indicated in my Part One this is a very welcome new page. Good subject choice again Work Horse.
Hey Bob…thanks for sharing her net worth, her acting awards and her other acting roles. She has been a very busy actress. I have not seen Stranger Things…but my kids love that show….so one day I will check that one out. Thanks for the kind words and the feedback.
“Winona Ryder has revealed that she took on the role of Spock’s mother in the new Star Trek movie because she was inspired by Marlon Brando’s appearance in Superman. In an interview with Empire the actress said: ‘I really don’t have much more than a cameo [in Star Trek]. I was kind of thinking I’d be like Marlon Brando in Superman. Not that I’d ever compare myself to Brando!’” [“WHO would? – Tennessee Williams – or was it Joel Hirschhorn who said that last bit?]
I wonder what she thought of Superman Returns. As I had read the above trivia a few months ago on FEMALE Film Site [The Work Horse in drag?] I had already typed “Voted Up” before I had even read this as usual solidly comprehensive and interesting page on Winona. Among actresses she has long been in that select group of females such as Liz Taylor/Jane Fonda/Babs Streisand/and Jean Simmons Winona’s co-star in Virginian Quilt who have been great Brando cheerleaders down the years.
OTHER TRIVIA
1/Winona has suffered from Kleptomania and was prosecuted for theft in the past. However it is a [treatable] medical disease because even addicts who have plenty of money steal under its influence; and anyway in my view Winona has atoned for her compulsive indiscretions with her philanthropic works. For example Ryder has been involved in charity work for the American Indian College Fund since her 20s, which sends low income Native Americans to universities. See also WH’s Interesting Fact 3 above – highly commendable as well. I didn’t know she was naturally a blonde! – Fact 2 above.
2/My favorite Ryder appearances have been in Dracula/Black Swan/Alien Insurrection/Girl Interrupted/The Iceman/and especially Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence. I didn’t like a couple of those films in themselves but they collectively get respectable-average Cogerson review love of around 68%
Hey Bob….thanks for checking out our Winona Ryder page. Interesting information on her channeling Marlon Brando for her Star Trek role. I knew about here shoplifting problems…like most “bad stuff” we generally avoid sharing that here. So you have seen at least 6 of her movies. Of your favorites…I have seen all of them. For me my favorites are Heathers, Wedding Destination (her most recent movie that I have seen) and Beetlejuice. Good stuff.
