  3. Less info version of what I was going to send originally. These are all the films that spent 4 weeks or more at number 1 from 1923 through 2009.

This info is based on the same source as the list above, the weekly top 10 box-office books, by Leonidas Fragias.

Some have done this over 2 years so they are listed like 1955-56, films like Titanic or Beverly Hills Cop. Some films hit # 1 on re-issues. 1 film hit # 1 in 5 different years. 1 film was # 1 in 3 straight years on its initial run. I have on my screen breakdowns of their streaks at number 1 but when I put it here the look is all messed up. I had things like 4-3-1 which means a film was 8 weeks # 1 but was first 4 weeks, fell, went back for 3, fell again and went back a third time. When you see separate entities for years that’s a reissue (weeks are listed by each year but don’t translate here well).

41 SOUND OF MUSIC JULIE ANDREWS 1965 (hit # 1 11 times in its initial run)
    33 BEN-HUR CHARLTON HESTON 1960

You wanted to know about office. The books list it all for the 20, 30’s and 40’s. The next 3 books he just lists the titles (Variety did print the boxoffice for all the films in the top 50 of the week). For the 80’s through the 2000’s he lists all the weekly boxoffice as seen in Variety, the Hollywood Reporter, Boxoffice Mojo, Boxoffice pro etc.)

Variety had a few weeks where the charts were frozen for a week, usually the week of the annual issue when they showed the top of the year. This is similar to what Billboard and other music chart magazines along with tons of radio stations did usually at the end of the year week. So whatever number the film is that week is counted as staying in the same position the next week. They only did this in 4 years or so. The other end of year charts issue the weekly was also listed.

    1. Hey Dan. Thanks for sharing this information. Lots of great movies. Thanks for the clarification on what box office is in the books. It would interest me to see those Top 50 lists from the 1980s…I remember seeing them in the 1980s…when I used to track down a Variety every week. I guess I will have to open up the wallet and take a peak at those numbers. Good stuff as always.

  4. 2nd attempt at this which wiped out in the middle of a comment I was writing. Based on the books of Leonidas Fragias there have been 2354 films that have hit # 1 on Variety from 1922 to 1981 and from 1981 to 2009 based on the figures we all see on Boxoffice Mojo, The Numbers and Box Office Report. This is the yearly breakdown for first time # 1 pictures. Re-issues are counted as separate releases but returns are only counted the first time in their run. Notice how dull the 60’s were on top, 1965 and 1966 stand out; and the rapid turnover in the 20’s, 30’s and the 2000’s.

    1. Hey Dan. Thanks for sharing this information. I agree with you about the mid 1960s. The Sound of Music, Dr. Zhivago and Mary Poppins have alot to do with that. While Stars Wars made 1977 look off as well. 1940 seems to be questionable. Gone With the Wind barely got released in 1939…..and made a boatload of money in 1940…..the biggest boat of all-time…yet there were 26 other movies that beat Gone With The Wind in 1939? Heck Gone With The Wind was still a Top 10 movie in 1941. I wonder how many of those #1 movies are in my database? I would think over 90% or maybe even higher. Anyway….great information as always.
