Your Movie Sucks

We own many Roger Ebert movie books.  One of our favorite Ebert books is Your Movie Sucks.  The opening section of the book talks about Ebert and the movie Deuce Bigalo: European Gigolo.  This includes Ebert’s infamous review of that Rob Schneider movie that ended with this line…. “Speaking in my official capacity as a Pulitzer Prize winner, Mr. Schneider, your movie sucks.”  See the full story here.

So when we got the idea to list the 50 worse ranked films in our 30,346 movie database…we struggled with a title for the page.  In the end we decided to go with the pretty simple title…Your Movie Sucks which is also a shout out to our favorite movie critic…Roger Ebert.  4 of our 50 are actually listed in Ebert’s book:  2000’s Battlefied Earth, 2002’s Swept Away, 2002’s Rollerball and 2005’s Dirty Love.

Ultimate Move Rankings (UMR) uses a math equation to rank movies.  Our equation uses three things:  Box office results (30% of the equation), critic and audience reviews (46% of the equation) and award recognition (24% of the equation).  Normally we concentrate on the movies that did the best in these three categories….well in this page we are looking at the movies that did the worst in these three categories.

Christian Slater’s Alone In The Dark has the worst combination of box office grosses, reviews and award recognition.

UMR’s 50 Worst Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort UMR’s 50 Worst movies by UMR subjects that got movie into our database
  • Sort UMR’s 50 Worst movies by stars of movie
  • Sort UMR’s 50 Worst movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort UMR’s 50 Worst movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort UMR’s 50 Worst movies how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie
  • Sort UMR’s 50 Worst movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

Hard to believe….but yes….a James Cameron movie is ranked as one of the worst movies.

We are sure there are worst movies than the ones listed…..but right now these are the ones that are in our database.  As our database expands….we are sure that movies like Can’t Stop The Music, Doogal  and Movie 43 will fall off this list.  We will try and update this page every year as new movies get ranked at UMR.com

    1. Hey Helakoski….I imagine my tally of 18 will end up being the winner….of being the person to see the most “horrible movies”….lol As for Sandler….his success at the box office pretty much makes sure he does not make these lists…..but he was the producer of Bucky Larsons….which is a truly horrible movie. Thanks for the visit.

  1. Hello Bruce,
I’ve seen only one movie of this list : Piranhas II. Iam a lucky man 🙂
But I think movies like American Ninja II the Confrontation, Delta Force 3 Killing Game, Superman IV, Black Sheeps or 3-Head Sharks would have their places in this ranking.

    1. Hey Laurent….congrats on being able to avoid almost all of these horrible movies. I actually want to see Piranha 2…if only so I can say that I have seen all of the Cameron movies…..I imagine like Kubrick with his first two movies…that Cameron would like to see all copies of that movie destroyed.

I am sure those movies would rank pretty low…..Superman IV is the only one in my database….and it was able to stay out of the Top 50….or I should say…Bottom 50. Thanks for stopping by.

  2. I’ve watched a lot of bad movies over the decades but I’ve only seen 12 from your list, should I be relieved? 🙂

I haven’t watched any of the 1940-1949 worst ranked.

I own one of the top 50 on DVD, the sublimely awful – Battlefield Earth. I always wondered, while they were making the film couldn’t they tell how bad it was turning out? Did they really think they had a hit on their hands?

Others I’ve sat thru – Rollerball (2002), Piranha 2, Lawnmower Man 2, Basic Instinct 2, Amityville 3, Movie 43 and I Know Who Killed Me.

I haven’t seen the UMR chart topper – Can’t Stop the Music or Gigli.

Another interesting page Bruce. Vote Up (or should that be ‘Down’?) 😉

    1. Hey Steve….I am the champ…..as I have seen 18 of these movies….this is a proud proud day. Amazingly I own Battlefield Earth….and it is also the only one of these bad movies that I own. One day I plan on listening to the DVD commentary on that one and see what the movie makers were thinking.

I actually saw Can’t Stop The Music in theaters….no idea why I was seeing a musical….so I will blame my friends or my grandmother…lol. Rollerball (2005) might be the worst remake of all-time. And shockingly in comes from the same director that gave us Predator and Die 1 & 3. His Rollerball is the real reason he went to jail a few years ago….lol.

      Thanks for the votes down….lol.

  3. Some pretty big names for some really bad movies. Harrison Ford, Jack Lemmon, Ben Affleck Richard Widmark, James Cameron, Al Pacino and Chris Klein. Plus Robert Mitchum with the bottom movies two years in a row when looking at the 1940s. Luckily I have not seen many of these. Actually counting the ones from the 1940s, there are 23 I have never even heard of before.

    1. Hey HOF….yep even the best have a clunker or two in their past….James Dean excluded…lol. I like how you included Mr. Chris Klein in your list of greats. Glad you have been able to avoid all of these bad movies. Thanks for stopping by.

    1. Hey Scotty…..I agree…when it was announced that Lawnmower Man 2 was coming out…it was predicted to be an Oscar contender….oh…how things went wrong…lol.
